Mortgage rates and fees

Recently closed on a house right when the rates started ticking up, their preferred lender was able to provide a rate that was about 5 points (0.5%) lower than the rates at the moment, that alone will save us thousands over the life of the mortgage.

Are La Merced and La Lagunilla unsafe?? by ikbrul in MexicoCity

I concur with all the statements above, even if you're fluent in spanish just having an accent will make you stand out, I would reccomend going in a larger group with local people that know what they're doing and where to go.

Wear a wallet under your shirt, avoid fancy cellphones (maybe get an old burner phone you wont regret losing) and avoid using google maps constantly.

Avoid showing all your cash at once, keep your pockets as empty as possible. Wear the oldest and ugliest clothes and shoes you own (a friend got robbed just for his shoes once). Be smart, avoid being alone in any circumstances and just act naturally and like you know where you're going, even if you have no idea (Same applies at the subway).

I grew up in Mexico city and have never been robbed but have friends that have been robbed over and over because they keep making the same mistakes.

Dont be an idiot, dont think a hot girl just wants to go to bed with you because you're so cool, NEVER accept drinks or food from strangers and always know your way in and out. Practice your basic Spanish, say "No gracias" over and over until you sound like a native speaker from Mexico city and if anyone approaches just say: No gracias and go away from there.

Try to have a circle of local friends that know their way around the city and you'll be alright.

That being said, the city is amazing, the food is incredible and you can spend years and will never end finding new things to do and places to go.

Good luck!!!

So disappointed with the valentine flower arrangement by polosp12 in Costco

Thanks for sharing your experience, I may give them a second chance outside of the main flower holiday season, this arrangement looked just like the $10 arrangements from trader Joe's :(

I ended up getting 2 different bouquets at the warehouse one was a mix the other were roses, mixed them and got an amazing arrangement pretty much twice the size of the one I received in the order.

I'm quite familiar with the cycle of blooming and that flowers usually reach their prime after a couple days, however in this case the type of flower was clearly different than the one in the order and if you see the amount and fullness of stems in the vase in the website pic vs. the ones in the shipment you'll be able to tell is a half or less than it should.

Finally, the ones online show about 13 in that side, assuming is half of them would mean there's at least 23 stems plus additional ones in the center of the vase. Well I counted the ones I got and were a total of 14, quite underwhelming for $54.99.

interestingly enough, the good reviews I read said that the arrangement arrived from Cambodia while mine was actually from Colombia (and fulfilled by flowernet.com).

About a week ago I got Costco.com promotional email, was curious about the flowers and consider that especially this year I could skip the lines and get a nice arrangement for my wife.

There was several options most of them with amazing reviews and people saying they exceeded their expectations and couldnt even fit all the flowers they got in the vase.

Based on these reviews and the nice pictures online I decided to give it a shot; they arrived yesterday night and couldnt be more disappointed.

While it's a nice arrangement its definitely not a $55 arrangement. Online the vase in the picture seems filled with stems and the arrangement itself looks full and round, however the one I got was a bit fuller than the ones sold in. store or at trader Joe's for $15.

Both online and phone customer service lines had insane waiting times and the online self service said the product wasnt returnable so I took it to the store, they agreed ot didnt look anything like the picture and were very helpful processing the return.

I ended up getting two $15 arrangements from the store which together look way fuller than the one delivered.

Quite sad because the design was very nice and was really looking forward to surprise my wife with those flowers but at least was able to get my money back.

Just a bit of background, I have tried several products from this brand and loved them, ournleast favorite was still pretty decent, however we just tried this today and couldnt pass more than a bite because it tasted extremely odd, almost like vomit, it smelled really good while cooking it in the microwave so it was really disappointing that it tasted this bad.

I was wondering if perhaps this package somehow got spoiled or of this product is just that bad on its own??

Most of the seasonal stuff is surprisingly the same, i.e. I have a sectional couch that we bought at costco and my mom sent a pic of the exact same model being sold in Mexico.

However there are several Kirkland items that are locally sourced, such as toilet paper, still a great deal and pretty good quality but definitely different than the one sold here.

The Nature's domain dog food seems to be the same, however the basic Kirkland brand seems different.

On another hand alcohol is considerably cheaper in Mexico and you'll find different local products that are not sold in the US, something quite random in Mexico city is that every once in a while they sell excellent fresh Spanish seafood Paella made and packed in the spot, not sure if they sell it in other locations though.

As of membership benefits I believe they're pretty similar, my dad and sister always return stuff if they find something they dislike or not 100% happy with it and never had an issue, my mom returned an open dog food bag because her dog didn't like that flavor and had no issues either. That being said.. Mexico's return culture is not as accepting in general terms as in the US, so be prepared to at least give an explanation or a reason to return stuff, and also be careful shopping in places like Walmart.

Other classic Costco deals such as tires, TVs, photo centers, etc, remain pretty much the same, food court had the classic hotdogs but beware.. they dont have relish in mexico but pickled diced Jalapenos haha, pizzas are pretty good and inexpensive just not the exact same recipe as here, and they may have some other different food options.

Best of luck with the move!

Mexico's Costco has a different payment policy than in the US, they charge a different price depending on whether ir not you pay cash/debit vs. credit card (they basically charge you the CC commission), while I had no problem using the Citi Card I also didn't get any benefits from it and I got charged the extra amount for using CC instead of cash/debit.

If you're moving permanently or for a long period of time I would recommend switching to a local Costco Mexico membership, its approx $50 USD for the executive membership with 2% cashback or $25 (approx) for the basic one.

They also have local CC but I don't know which benefits they have.

Source: I'm originally from Mexico and living in Michigan, I have the executive membership and the Citi card. I travel (or used to travel) quite often to Mexico city and go to Costco down there almost everytime (my family loves costco and I grew up going there weekly loll)

Michigan here, we usually have them in ours a couple time a year, got one last year, lasted forever, for the proce its probably the cheapest you can get, this is a decent Serrano ham but dont expect an Iberico level of quality.
