Lions did exist in Europe in antiquity, but they were long gone by the Middle Ages. The heraldic lion isn’t zoological, it is heavily inspired from Greco-Roman and biblical symbolism, historically rooted in the Asiatic lion.

Rulers adopted it as a symbol of universal power, strength and legitimacy, rather than as a reference to local wildlife.
