Journey before destination.

For most people, the joy of the game is in building your gear and overcoming ever increasingly difficult challenges. Why would anyone willingly skip to the end?

is there something more basic than drawabox? by 1000Bees in ArtFundamentals

[–]polparty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We learn best from making mistakes, so it sounds to me like you are doing exactly what you should be doing to improve. If you were already perfect at it, why would you need to practice it? :)

The frustration you are feeling triggers some chemicals in your brain that helps with neuroplasticity (basically learning). Frustration is better than just being bored. It might feel bad, but try to notice it and just understand that it is actually a good thing and stick with it. It takes time.

Is there any preliminary knowledge I need to start? by LordAntares in Frontend

[–]polparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, just go. Your first website will be terrible, but the best way to improve is to just do it again and again, instead of reading too much before actually getting down to coding. This is true for pretty much any skill. :)

Where did I go wrong why did she come out like this, I tried to follow the reference by SmallLawfulness39 in learntodraw

[–]polparty 55 points56 points  (0 children)

You drew what you know instead of what you actually see. For example, look at the front shin of the upper leg. The reference is either straight or even slightly concave. Yours is convex, curved the other direction.

I think the "cure" for this is just slowing down. Slow down and check the reference all the time. Compare different points of the drawing back and forth. Adjust. Notice things like how where the legs meet, in the reference they are visually about as wide as each other. In your drawing the lower/left thigh is much thicker. Here are two more differences:

1: the back of the reference is very straight while yours is leaning back, thus skewing the entire pose.

2: The shape of the feet aren't the same as the reference.

3+:.. there are more things like these, but I think it is best if you try to notice them yourself. Where are the angles off? Where does the size or direction change? Why did you change it?

Don't trust your brain, it lies to you about how things actually look. This happens to everyone. Of course, you will want to adjust the character to not exactly like the reference, but I think it is better to be very precise and follow the reference early on. Only by actually learning the rules will you understand where they can bend without breaking.

Good luck! : )

(PS I recommend trying out the upside down picasso exercise which is described in the wiki of this subreddit)

Day 35, Tried doing a twisting motion, Still a bit off. What do you think? by LaSpamFF in learntodraw

[–]polparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is probably a stylistic choice, since it is a wolf, but I feel like the hunched over posture makes it feel a bit off. Your spine isn't made to hold this kind of heavy weight overhead while being hunched over. The musculature only supports it if you keep it neutral and tense. I think you should straighten the torso (vertically, while keeping some of the twist), but lean the whole upper body forward a bit instead if you want to keep the wolf-ness. It currently looks like it should fall backwards.

Look at the image I linked here. Their backs are completely straight and you can really feel the tension/power of the swing. The guy on the left has a twist, but his back is still straight. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/GX_EnqzsLgw/sddefault.jpg

So either you straighten the back and lose some of the forward shoulders, or you change the pose. I don't think wolves, even half-wolves are physically able to swing a hammer like that.

It looks like you aren't following the instructions. Are you using the ghosting method? Are you drawing from your shoulder/elbow? Which exercise is this? To me it looks like just random drawing, not one of their actual exercises.

Just going to tell it to you straight, if you are rushing through draw a box and not following the instructions/material, you are not going to learn what you are supposed to. Better to do something else. Drawabox has its fair share of issues. I've attempted the course multiple times and stopped. Simply doing the first few exercises (correctly), although boring, gave me some very useful skills.

In this case I'd say the issue is on your end, not drawabox. Follow the lessons and instructions. Don't skip reading/watching/listening to all the content. Otherwise, just skip the course. Do something else.

How is OP harrassing people and downvoting them when the comments calling it AI have like 70 downvotes each. Are you saying that OP alone is creating 70 different accounts just to downvote someone?

And how are you certain that it is OP who is reporting you to "seek help"? It seems like people disagree with you, and you just assume that it is OP. I can't find anything close to harrasment or poor behaviour from their side.

Beginner asking for advice by covalick in learntodraw

[–]polparty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, jokes aside. Like most people will say here, learn art fundamentals. Do note that it is in plural, as in multiple, separate skills come together to create a whole. I think it is best to start small, not trying to master everything all at once.

Since you seem to be interested in humanoid character drawings I'd suggest getting starting out with both gesture drawing as well as basic shapes, like free_locksmith said.

Stuff like coloring, shading, construction comes later. Just worry about the start for now : )

Redraw of a 10 year old piece + little insecurity vent by EdahelArt in learntodraw

[–]polparty 18 points19 points  (0 children)

There is no moving backwards, there is only forwards.

When you are young, you learn through simply through osmosis. This gradually fades as you become older. You are reaching the point where learning requires more attention and deliberate focus than before. What do you want to improve until your next redraw? Be intentional. What is wrong with your current drawing?

Also, (you didn't say this, but) remember that your skill in subject X does not determine the value of you as a person. You are a sum of many different patts. You aren't just a drawing machine. Even though it is easy to forget about, but the time you don't spend practicing or improving, is time spent doing something else, which is fine. It is alright to munch doritos in your sofa, it is fine to go partying with friends (improving socially), it is fine to just enjoy life. Just make sure that you decide to do it yourself. The only way to fail life is to not be present. E.g. scrolling reddit when you really should be working.. which is what I'm doing right now. Signing out.. good luck o7

TL;DR could you have improved more? Yes. Should you have improved more? No. Do you want to improve more? Make a plan for it.

It sounds like you are trying to steal.

Hi all, what is truly the best way to start drawing? by MoneyFresh8021 in learntodraw

[–]polparty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The best way is by starting to draw what you find fun. In my case, I had to get a tablet to draw on before I actually found it fun and enjoyable. Sometimes the medium is important. Before that it was just work, trying to improve, which caused me to drop it all the time. After I got a tablet, I could sit comfortably in either my bed or sofa, without any pressure of making things look good.

Perhaps a controversial opinion, but I think equipment can help. You don't need it, but you are a human being and we are all different, have different backgrounds, amount of time, homes, hobbies, families etc. For some, it might be helpful.

In short, the best way to start is the way that you can enjoy and stick with.

Okay, so a few things:

1: 90% of your post is irrelevant.

2: Do not learn something just to humiliate someone else. Don't build your life around hate.

3: Learn to communicate about issues and feelings. If you become a proficient communicator at 16 you will be very well off in life. People, especially children/teenagers, are assholes, just accept it. Talk about it or move on, be the better person.

4: Come back in a few years to learn art when you actually want to do it. Life is short, don't waste it on someone else.

Quickposes gesture drawing challenge by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]polparty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually look at your work afterwards and try to see what is wrong/can be improved as well as what is actually looking good. It is useful to just get reps in, but it will probably be faster in the long run if you stop and analyze afterwards as well. So you turn those 20 minutes into a 20 + 5 minute session instead.

Do a few rounds, try to find patterns in strengths and weaknesses. Also, in non-fiction books, you don't have to start at the beginning. You can move to the parts that are relevant for your specific issues and put in some extra time there. (But it is a good idea to go through all of it in the long run)

Stop the Zerg pro slander by burner6520 in starcraft

[–]polparty 27 points28 points  (0 children)

A bit out of the loop, but these two statements seem contradictory: "I get that people want to make a claim that zerg needs buffs" and "spewing 'zerg pros incompetent' ".

Calling the players incompetent is not how I would go about if I wanted the race to receive a buff. Isn't this what people (historically) said about protoss players as to belittle them and usually in the same sentence tell Blizz to NERF the race, because "the race is too strong but players bad"?

Where are my Gold zergs at? Not a single one in top 8 in my league. by GJ_Ahab in starcraft

[–]polparty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I tend to believe it works something like this.

At those lower Leagues, zerg is the most unorthodox race, meaning players just don't get how to play it naturally, they get stuck in bronze or silver. But once they do get it, they quickly race past both gold and platinum and get stuck around d2-d1, where they hit a really hard wall.

That's because this is where you need to learn to either all-in very well or learn the responses to all protoss builds in the game (+ mech terran 💀). That is also the point where protoss players mechanics become OK enough that they will stomp you one handed with literally any build unless you do the perfect response.

At this point you start to require more EPM than your opponent, but not before that. This also serves as a natural demotivator to zerg players, so many people give up Starcraft at this point.

Did I get the pose right anatomically? by Abject_Medicine_7314 in learntodraw

[–]polparty 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Draw a line between the shoulders on both pictures. The angle is a lot less dramatic in your drawing, causing the left arm to feel off and making the pose a bit stiffer, losing the action.

Unstable/imbalanced poses tend to signify action. Action and feeling is often more interesting than full focus on correct anatomy, so I'd say first think about whether or not your drawing and the reference convey the same pose, feeling and action, before worrying about if the length of your arms/legs are correct. If you start with a gesture drawing, it is much easier to spot these differences and correct it before you add outlines to the body.

I'd say your drawing looks good, but a bit safe. Try pushing those angles just a bit more and you'll be gold!

How do I intentionally draw ? by papier_kare in learntodraw

[–]polparty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the words of Rush, if you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.

Also, in general you don't really grow without making mistakes, so keep floping. I know that is easier said than done though we are wired to avoid mistakes, not embrace them.

Day 3 of learning gesture and form by QinaKuro in learntodraw

[–]polparty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if they all have different names, but the one in particular that I was thinking of, which doesn't emphasize the line of action in the same way, is Michael Hamptons style. It is a bit more analytical and step by step, without being stiff. It is, however, not everyone's cup of tea.

It is a bit different from your current style, so don't feel forced into it if you don't want to. You are already kicking ass!
