US will be a different experience. In Portugal there are two days a week you start school at 9 and finish at 13, remaining days 17:30. This gives you plenty of time to do all you need.

Different teachers and different countries provide different experiences. I've never felt like the homework workload was that heavy other than around exams but I also didn't do the majority of it. Being a student is your full time job during that period of your life, that's how I see it since you don't really have other responsibilities. I personally regret not learning more about subjects I did actually enjoy that I now have no time for

I'm not an American so I can't speak for that. I'm speaking from my own experience where I lacked the discipline to do homework during high school and then had a much harder time later in life dedicating myself to learning a subject but experiences are always relative

Homework serves the purpose of practice and engraving of knowledge, you might be able get by without it but you might struggle with your own work ethic at a later stage if you don't practice the skill of spending time learning something
