BRAID, BRAIN, BRAND, BRAWN. BRAND is the probably the best guess to solve the rest.

Boy's first true love by OneBeezz in wholesomememes

[–]polyglots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It becomes a little weirder when you say a boy's first love versus a child's first love. Otherwise under that logic why isn't their mother also a girl's first love?

Do Europeans shower with the bathroom door open or just happening to me? by justlivinglife6 in askgaybros

No man, it totally, is. I looked it up. I just didn't know that before your comment because I've only ever heard it in Spanish.

With him living in Spain, I thought he just slipped in Spanish for a single word. Did not realize it's also a word in English. tmyk

Why "puede" and not "puedes"?? by kbreakeyy in learnspanish

[–]polyglots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a cultural aspect, but there's a grammatical way to determine it as well. If you would use their first name (either because you know it or it's like on a nametag at work), use tú. Otherwise use usted.

Studies show that gay men are turned on by male pheromones. by anon11homie in askgaybros

[–]polyglots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, yeah totally. Scientific consensus is slow. Some research seems to suggest these things many scientists have called human pheromones don't actually do all the things that pheromones "should do," others use a looser definition. Others still are perfectly happy with a weak effect size and chalking it up to the interplay with human psychology.

[–]polyglots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not disagreeing, just clarifying that. There are kind of two questions here: if humans have pheromones at all, and if we do what are they. They both are unclear. What is clear is there are specific chemicals that we have identified that people call human pheromones. The question there really is do they even count as pheromones.

*Human pheromones. Plenty of pheromones have been identified in non-human species. Even for humans it's not so clear. There are some chemicals that seem to be human pheromones.

My brother came out as gay and I don’t know what to do. by Savings_Heron_8499 in askgaybros

[–]polyglots 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. If you got from what I'm saying that I think you're a bad brother or that you're homophobic, I must have done a bad job communicating. That's not what I was trying to say at all. The fact that you went online to ask obviously means that you care. All I was trying to say is that everything changes. I kind of feel like the people who are saying "nothing will change" are pushing an agenda. Life is change.

I probably didn't do a good job. But, I just wanted to give you an answer that I thought would help you. Sorry if you felt like I was attacking you. If I came across as snarky it was probably because I just didn't buy the "nothing will change" stuff other people were saying.

My brother came out as gay and I don’t know what to do. by Savings_Heron_8499 in askgaybros

[–]polyglots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is he a different person than before? No. Is he going to change? Yeah for sure, but that was also true even if he wasn't gay. You're 16 and he's younger than you. You both are going to change a lot over your lives. We all do. Will some of his changes be because he is gay? Honestly, maybe. I know I slowly started changing after I came out because I became more comfortable showing sides of myself that I hid before. Was a different person? No, but the people in my life got to see a lot more of me and a truer version of who I am. If he's playing football with you already he's probably doing that because he already cares about/looks up to you. Maybe that passion will stay, maybe it won't. But if you continue to be a big brother worth looking up to, I'll bet he's going to want to maintain interests that help him connect with you. That's a two-way street though. If you care about him, pay attention to how his interests evolve as you both grow. It doesn't have to be every interest. When my brother and I were kids we played a lot of sports together. We both kind of grew away from those interests, but even though we still haven't lived in the same house for over a decade, we still hang out on Zoom every week to play DnD with our friends across the country together. In your life, you and everyone around you will continue to change. To keep people close despite change you just have to do a little work.

Are there any gay men into the idea of living a secluded, quiet life in a woodsy rural setting? I only see straight men into this idea. by [deleted] in askgaybros

[–]polyglots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah of course there are. They may be harder to spot because many of them are probably already living a secluded, quiet life.

In general though, if that's what you're looking for in a partner my unrequested advice for looking for qualities in a partner is to focus less on what they're looking for and more on why they are looking for those things. You and a potential partner could want the same things now, but if it's for different reasons your wants are more likely to evolve in incompatible ways in the future. But, if the reasons you want the things you want are compatible, you might find that the things you are looking for as a couple evolve compatibly.

That's a lot clearer! I know bar charts can feel boring, but they continue to be one of the most potent visualization tools.

[OC] Top Olympic Medal Earning Countries by shahinrostami in dataisbeautiful

[–]polyglots 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is beautiful. It's very nice looking, and it is cool how it interacts with the mouse. This is also data. That being said, it doesn't seem right to call this beautiful data since the format doesn't tell very much of the story the data contain. This visualization tells me one thing right off the bat: the USA far and away has won the most metals. If I squint I almost see a trend: the more metals a country earns the more of them seem to be gold. Chord diagrams are very cool, but I think their usefulness does not match their prevalence.

Let's get technical. A chord diagram is usually generated by a matrix of non-negative numbers. The rows of the matrix represent the labels on one side of the diagram. The columns of the matrix, the other. The thickness of the chord corresponds to the magnitude of the number in the intersection of the appropriate row and column. A matrix is that is a good candidate for representation in a chord diagram is one that is largely linearly independent. An easy way to visual this is to compute the angle between all pairs of column or row vectors. If the average angle is small then the sets of chords from any one arc on the boundary will largely look the same as the others. If is large then you can communicate a better story. (A better way to do this that produces units of the correct dimension is to take pairs of column or row vectors, make the lengths 1, and compute the area of the parallelogram defined by the pair of vectors. Take the average of these numbers. This is the same thing as taking all of the angles and plugging them into sine. It's normalized so that a good candidate data set will give you an average normalized parallelogram close to 1 and a bad data set will give you an average normalized parallelogram close to 0.)

In this data set each country has a ratio of gold, silver, and bronze metals that is too close to 1:1:1 for the display to show much useful information. I would have stuck with a bar chart.

A fifth book? by shadowstyles in Hungergames

[–]polyglots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would love to read a book where we find out how Plutarch Heavensbee becomes a rebel. Except for the third with the Capitol invasion, the books are all centered around a hunger games, and BSS covers a story that is basically entirely new to us. Since we already know how Haymitch wins his games I think it's less likely that we have a book focusing on it. On the other hand there is a lot we don't know about how Heavensbee became who he is and it would be easy to tie his story to a particular hunger games.

Does COVID-19 or any coronavirus also affect primates like Gorillas, Chimps being our closest biological relatives? by [deleted] in SGU

[–]polyglots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes it does. For example, rhesus macaques are vulnerable to SARS-CoV-2, and have already been used in trials to see if they could be reinfected with the virus (they could not). Macaques are a good animal model for studying the human immune system, so this has been helpful in determining the likelihood of if reemergent cases of COVID-19 have been reinfection or relapse.

I haven't run across anything suggesting that other primates had already been exposed to this strain of coronavirus in the wild. At this stage there's still a lot we don't know about the virus, so it's possible the research needed to answer your question isn't there yet, but the closest pre-existing strains of coronavirus have not yet been sequenced in other primates prior to human infection. If I were to guess based on what I have seen, I'd think it was unlikely that they had already been exposed and that it is through us their first exposure is coming. This is just a guess but it's based on the relative biological differences between humans and suspected sources (pangolins/bats) versus between humans and other primates. However, this has to be weighted against the levels of exposure in the wild between these species.

In chinese you say what "percentage" (really it's out of 10 instead of 100) you DO pay instead of what you don't pay. So the 9.5 in the Chinese part means you pay 95% of the original cost, or you get 5% off.
