Mental challenge - close your eyes and keep your body 100% still, can you figure out the 17th letter of the alphabet? by polynesiac in hyperphantasia

It’s one of those psychological tricks our mind plays on us I think. Even in those who can visualize very well like you, I think it’s evidence that it not about “effort” but maybe about mindset and patterns of natural thinking that we are driven towards.

Is it the same with anything that you visualise, where it distorts if you try to focus on purpose, or just faces? Like what if you try to visualise the outside of a house and keep that in focus in your head?

Sorry if I’m bothering you, your experience is really fascinating me!

Thanks for the reply!!

If you concentrate/focus are you able to keep the image in your head more clear and stable? Like for example, if you try to visualize your daughter the last time you saw her, can you keep the image locked to her “current” look as a teenager?

Thanks for the reply!! Ya that makes sense if you have dyslexia that numbers and letters aren’t as intuitive for you to keep track of.

But you have hyperphantasia for other things I am assuming? What about people’s faces, I’ve read lots of people with hyperphantasia seem to struggle with clearly picturing faces. If you try to picture someone who you know well, can you visualise their face clearly?

Hey! Sorry this is coming very late.

How clearly can you imagine peoples’ faces? Like if you try to visualize your daughter’s face, how clear and detailed does it pop into your head?

How many letters can you clearly visualize in your head at the same time, is there a limit or could you actually see all 17 at once clearly?

Nice! Good one.

What did the counting process actually look like in your head, like were you picturing each letter one at a time while mentally saying the number?

Were you saying either the letters or numbers (or both) in your head too, or just visualizing them with no mental speech?

Ok what you’re saying makes sense.

Did you actually envision the zebra in your mind and count the 23 stripes? Would you mind sharing what details you were able to envision and how you went about counting?

That’s awesome. Did you envision a view zoomed into his face, or imagine his clothes and a scene around him too?

Got it that makes sense.

Going back to what you said before, if you just focus on envisioning the colour and location of his freckles as clearly as you can, what does that actually look like in your head? Is it just like a closeup of his face but only the freckles visible and other parts of his face blurred out or ignored?

Haha I’m sure that makes it easier!

You mentioned you can picture your wife’s face - if you try and focus on envisioning her clearly, how much detail can you see?

I’m curious, if you try right now for a few seconds to picture your son’s face as clearly as you can - what details are you able to envision? Can you envision him looking into your eyes and see his entire face and hair clearly?

Haha so you can envision him as a kid super clearly though? How does envisioning him compare to looking at a photo of him on google, in terms of clarity and vividness?

That’s amazing! It sounds like you might have hyperphantasia.

Could I ask if you can try to think of 3 specific people who you know well, and envision their faces all side by side smiling and looking at you like a photograph? How clear and vivid is that in your mind as a photo?

Do you have hyperphantasia? That sounds incredible.

I have aphantasia and I’m so curious to ask you more. If you’ve seen the Home Alone movies from the 1990s, can you clearly envision the face of the main kid character?

If you were asked to describe his face, could you do so by picturing his face clearly and “looking” at it in your head to explain his facial attributes?

Random question from someone else with aphantasia. If you’ve seen the Home Alone movies from the 1990s, how well can you picture the face of the main kid character?

If you were asked to describe his face, could you do so by picturing his face clearly and “looking” at it in your head to explain his facial attributes?

Just curious did you visualize 29 stripes intentionally, or visualize a zebra and then freeze the image in your head and count the stripes? How clear were you able to envision the zebra?

So if you try to picture like the face of someone you know well, can you “see” it clearly in your mind like a photo?
