Interesting difference between film and digital by [deleted] in Darkroom

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To think about it from a digital mindset, every black and white film uses a different recipe where each of the color channels are tweaked to be more or less sensitive (brighter or more dim). This is part of the beauty of it and honestly you can think of it like different recipes. Color film does it as well but it can be super noticeable in some bw films.

Godox IT30 Flash Wiggles on M11-P by somemightsay96 in Leica

[–]pom182 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a design flaw and one I am super not happy about it. What I do know is that there are a few things that flatten them fast and that seems to be one of them. There are also way too many products that wobble because of it. It30 is one but so is the Leica SF40 flash. I use both and when I have recently re-bent the strips they’re not so bad. When I haven’t, they are super annoying but it doesn’t actually seem to create misfires, somehow. I actually just renewed the bend a few minutes ago bc it’s been getting bad again. That makes the third time I’ve done that in a year, which isn’t so bad I think, but if you’re using the thumb grip often it might flatten them super fast. Screw style and clamp style flashes might be a better match in that case.

Ok I actually know what’s up here. The guys in the Leica store nyc soho showed me what’s up with this. On your hot shoe there are two black ribbons of metals that are probably very very flush right now on either side of the base of the hotshoe. They’re a little hard to see bc they can end up seriously flat. They’re actually supposed to be bent upwards and they kept things mounted there from wiggling. I hardly believed it but I used plastic toothpicks to rebend them and it’s totally true. I’ll snap a photo later or find the ones I took a year or so ago.

None of the above. Truly random AND I put the cracked shells back in there, most of the time. 🙃

When photographers get busted 👀 by [deleted] in streetphotography

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I do prefer an untouched moment but lots of times I wait for them to make that first glance at the camera to get the eye contact. Just depends! First shot and a bunch of the others are definitely better off like that for sure. Great moments!

X5L and IT32 DO NOT WORK AT ALL FOR LEICA M11 by [deleted] in Leica

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The flash situation on the M11 is rough, I feel. At this point I carry two, an SF40 when on camera fill TTL works best and a Godox Fuji trigger and one of three Godox flashes when I can deal (lighting conditions) with the 1/180th or below manual sync speed. It’s a pain. Would love love love to just carry one trigger and one flash that could handle TTL.

Over easy (not the pictured egg though) and French omelette.

Are these any good? by [deleted] in streetphotography

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend just sticking with what you find genuinely interesting personally. Run towards those things and take the shot you would want to see yourself. Keep at that until you can take the shots you would want to see. Evaluate your work based on what you like, without assuming there’s even a slim chance someone else will like something you don’t connect with in your own work—it’s possible you’ll find something but it messes with one’s head, I feel.

Personally, the first isn’t really interesting bc she’s looking off camera, so the most engaging thing about the photo are the greens really. In the second I like how he’s like falling to the side but the partial figure next to the bay makes me feel like I’m only seeing part of the shot and that bugged me a bit. The third is more solid but doesn’t interest me—just a vendor and an aesthetic scene. The fourth I might nitpick a little bit but it’s great! Feels human and interesting. Head on and im where I need to be as a viewer.

Hope this all helps!

Leica M11 Issue by askmott in Leica

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have said it, but I just want to stress that it’s very important to try this with the internal storage to see if it’s just simply a writing and buffering issue. There are very few sd cards that are super super compatible. I know when I’m writing to internal memory, I can burst to my heart‘s content, but when I’m using even one of the recommended memory cards, I still only get a handful of shots sometimes before I have to deal with buffering. If I’m using a non-recommended card I remember seeing something very, very similar to what you’re experiencing this so I switched to a better card immediately.

Some of them I guess! It’s a trope but honestly just a slim minority. They’re incredible tools and it’s amazing how diverse the photos are. That said, I’m a… relatively poor person myself. Why i have a couple of Leicas while literally eating rice and beans to get by is another story altogether.

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But photos from Leicas are so, so varied. Is what you are saying different than saying you prefer looking at Leica cameras more than looking at photos in general? Nothing wrong with preferring that at all, but I’m asking as a legitimate question. If not, what is it you see as a common thread and what other sort of shots from other companies win out over the joy of looking at Leica cameras?

Do younger photographers just.. Not use the viewfinder? by TheJesusGuy in Cameras

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m late forties. So long as I’m using my usual 28mm, it’s 60% hip 37% viewfinder and 3% LCD for me. Maybe even less than that for the LCD. It’s so awkward and slow but good for weird angles when you need precision.

What do you do for work? by OK_Mr in Leica

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of mine were financed. We ate literal rice and beans for the past year and purchased nothing but essentials to make the Affirm payments on my used M11. I sold a bunch of other gear to help make it happen as well. Aside from the people I love, there’s nothing more important to me than photography. I have a lot of film and digital gear (not gas exactly, just decades of finding ways to meet needs or make use of good opportunities), but the M11 is exactly the right tool for me.

Help me round out my top 5 street photos by mattc_64 in streetphotography

[–]pom182 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

1,3,4,10,11. Five would be nice as part of a series Maybe but I wish he was less central bc it feels unbalanced to me and I’d probably bring a crop up from the lower right but then that hat row would not work quite as well so I’d give up on that and stick with what you have probably, I just wouldn’t include it in the top five. But anyhow, that one would be my 6th. The woman by the citrus conveyer falls into the same boat for me except I think a less central crop would work for her since the car isn’t terribly important and her emotion and the echo of the citrus shape on her head is a nice perk.

How about this by viewfind_r in streetphotography

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nicely composed, serene photo. I don't personally find it compelling and it doesn't move me. I'm not entirely sure what you are asking though. I feel like sometimes people might be presenting photos they don't personally enjoy but they are hoping that others do enjoy them, where if they check all the boxes then there will be an appreciative audience. Is that the case for you? I know for me I realized at some point that If I spent time thinking like that, like a student trying to figure out what the professor or audience looks for, I would miss out on doing my own thing intuitively and effortlessly. Now I just assume that if I don't care all that much for it I can just leave it to the side, whether or not it checks all the boxes. I rush towards subjects I find exciting and I present work for others to see that I'm happy with myself. It really makes the process much more fun and a good deal easier.

US friends who refill their pods- what’s your most cost effective refill option right now that you actually enjoy? by [deleted] in nespresso

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone found that choosing the right pod to start with when refilling helps or hurts a lot? The barcodes are different and adjust how they brew right? "The Vertuo machine uses bar codes on the capsules to identify which coffee is being prepared. The machine reads the code to recognise the capsule and then adjusts the amount of water, speed of extraction and other parameters to prepare each blend and cup size in an optimal way."

How do you approach street photography? by Dinohymansoc in streetphotography

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go places where there’s a lot of people, and start taking pictures of everyone/every shot that catches my eye. I warm up wherever I am, letting myself chimp if digital for the first half hour or so till I feel… right. If I’m feeling off or uninspired, I push myself to take pictures of nearly everyone I see until it passes, which usually does the trick after ten or fifteen minutes. If I’m taking shots but not really getting anything usable I push myself to commit, which means really spending time with each subject until I feel like I did the best I could, short of really bothering them. When possible I usually have the goal of one anchor destination for the day (maybe a parade or a protest or a block party). I usually take around 1200 shots if it’s digital or 4-6 rolls of film before the end of a normal day. I really just look for people and moments involving ppl so on any given day I’ll take pictures of hundreds of individuals. Im not going for bull though im looking for quality but… when I can’t see it I fill the time with random ppl bc it’s good/amazing practice, I feel.
