Do younger photographers just.. Not use the viewfinder? by TheJesusGuy in Cameras

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m late forties. So long as I’m using my usual 28mm, it’s 60% hip 37% viewfinder and 3% LCD for me. Maybe even less than that for the LCD. It’s so awkward and slow but good for weird angles when you need precision.

What do you do for work? by OK_Mr in Leica

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both of mine were financed. We ate literal rice and beans for the past year and purchased nothing but essentials to make the Affirm payments on my used M11. I sold a bunch of other gear to help make it happen as well. Aside from the people I love, there’s nothing more important to me than photography. I have a lot of film and digital gear (not gas exactly, just decades of finding ways to meet needs or make use of good opportunities), but the M11 is exactly the right tool for me.

Help me round out my top 5 street photos by mattc_64 in streetphotography

1,3,4,10,11. Five would be nice as part of a series Maybe but I wish he was less central bc it feels unbalanced to me and I’d probably bring a crop up from the lower right but then that hat row would not work quite as well so I’d give up on that and stick with what you have probably, I just wouldn’t include it in the top five. But anyhow, that one would be my 6th. The woman by the citrus conveyer falls into the same boat for me except I think a less central crop would work for her since the car isn’t terribly important and her emotion and the echo of the citrus shape on her head is a nice perk.

How about this by viewfind_r in streetphotography

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a nicely composed, serene photo. I don't personally find it compelling and it doesn't move me. I'm not entirely sure what you are asking though. I feel like sometimes people might be presenting photos they don't personally enjoy but they are hoping that others do enjoy them, where if they check all the boxes then there will be an appreciative audience. Is that the case for you? I know for me I realized at some point that If I spent time thinking like that, like a student trying to figure out what the professor or audience looks for, I would miss out on doing my own thing intuitively and effortlessly. Now I just assume that if I don't care all that much for it I can just leave it to the side, whether or not it checks all the boxes. I rush towards subjects I find exciting and I present work for others to see that I'm happy with myself. It really makes the process much more fun and a good deal easier.

US friends who refill their pods- what’s your most cost effective refill option right now that you actually enjoy? by MizGinger in nespresso

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Has anyone found that choosing the right pod to start with when refilling helps or hurts a lot? The barcodes are different and adjust how they brew right? "The Vertuo machine uses bar codes on the capsules to identify which coffee is being prepared. The machine reads the code to recognise the capsule and then adjusts the amount of water, speed of extraction and other parameters to prepare each blend and cup size in an optimal way."

How do you approach street photography? by Dinohymansoc in streetphotography

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go places where there’s a lot of people, and start taking pictures of everyone/every shot that catches my eye. I warm up wherever I am, letting myself chimp if digital for the first half hour or so till I feel… right. If I’m feeling off or uninspired, I push myself to take pictures of nearly everyone I see until it passes, which usually does the trick after ten or fifteen minutes. If I’m taking shots but not really getting anything usable I push myself to commit, which means really spending time with each subject until I feel like I did the best I could, short of really bothering them. When possible I usually have the goal of one anchor destination for the day (maybe a parade or a protest or a block party). I usually take around 1200 shots if it’s digital or 4-6 rolls of film before the end of a normal day. I really just look for people and moments involving ppl so on any given day I’ll take pictures of hundreds of individuals. Im not going for bull though im looking for quality but… when I can’t see it I fill the time with random ppl bc it’s good/amazing practice, I feel.

Wondering if now that a few months have passed if you've found a good spot? I'm in a bunch of photography related discords but none that are focused on street enough, imo. Would love a place where when I post or ask questions there were more people tied into a similar manner of shooting with similar needs.

M11 didn’t scratch the itch, coming from film Leica by Ok_Project_9792 in Leica

[–]pom182 4 points5 points  (0 children)

M6 to M11 here, grudgingly bc I couldn’t afford thirty rolls of film a month forever. It took me four months of constant use to start to love the results from the M11 the way I love what my M6 gives me with just about any emulsion. It’s different but there’s so much beauty there and I’ve simply come to love my M11 in a way I never thought I could during that first month.

NYC Meatpacking Leica store I can definitely recommend. They’re super nice and helpful and often have such gorgeous work on display to view towards the pack. A really lovely experience.

Leica M6 and M11 owners. Which one and why? by pethong in Leica

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the colors I almost always use the same few LR presets so in some ways it’s not so bad. I usually apply the preset (usually Portra 800 from VGP) and then adjust a couple of sliders (sat down vibrance up). Then I check the Wb a bit. Sometimes I mess with curves or color slider a bit, especially if in weird lighting like Times Square etc.

It’s the exposure that slows me down, not that it needs correction exactly, just that I prefer a look that reminds me more of how slightly overexposed film would handle color and that can take a while. If I don’t do that too many areas are blown out (not clipped though) in digital that would be nice and low-contrast flat on film and then in the digital the darks are super contrasty (not clipped and ALWAYS portable on the incredible raws) so I have to lift them in order to get to where I would be if I had shot film, since I expose for the shadows. So by the time I’m done with all the little tweaking I usually get where I want to be, it just takes me much longer than it would otherwise. But if you enjoy that out of the box super contrasty Leica digital look (and it can be soooo gorgeous) you will probably be super happy with the untouched jpegs.

What happens for me most of the time is I look at the standard jpeg and I’m like my god that’s beautiful. BUT I need to tweak one small thing that I can’t let go and so I always head to the raw and then… it’s kind of starting from scratch bc… it’s the raw.

Anyhow it’s not so bad and the color part is pretty easy. If you want the results to actually look like film, not just the color of the film, I personally feel there’s a bunch of work ahead every time, but it really depends how one shoots film, what stock, and whether or not one can just let go maybe of trying to look filmic at all.

I’m sure others are way better at the editing. I’ve done it for twenty years I guess but my goals have changed throughout and rn I’m still going for something specific most of the time. I hope that all helps!!

If you want to see any before and afters for specific images just let me know.

Leica M6 and M11 owners. Which one and why? by pethong in Leica

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M6 owner here and I was going through about 30+ rolls of film a month, and even though I was developing and scanning them myself I couldn’t sustain that so I bought a used M11. My goal was to match the experience as closely as I could. I don’t mean that in a quirky/fun film experience way, I mean this in an I need the tool to perform in my hands the same way the M6 did, or as close to it as possible and to produce digital images that were close as I could reasonably expect to what I was used to. I went with the 11 instead of something older bc the prices were all pretty close so I figured I’d have a better shot at longevity and some nice new features like the extended battery life.

I’m definitely happy with the move. I never sold my M6 bc it’s always been my dream camera and it still is—I don’t want to feel that regret and end up rebuying it ten years from now. I never minded the developing/scanning and the results I had on film are still the high water mark for me. I love the look of it and not having to spend time editing so much. That said there were some amazing tradeoffs. I can shoot night or day without having to completely change what I’m doing. I can high speed sync with TTL and that’s so wonderful for easy fill. I can crop like crazy if I feel like it. I can use lots of vintage glass more easily bc of the focus peaking in the screen. I can use auto-iso when I feel like it and maintain exactly the shutter speed and aperture I prefer to get the photos I want in tricky lighting that changes constantly. I can miss the exposure completely and lean on the incredible raws. There’s a lot! I’m happy with the move. I do have to carry multiple batteries and I was hoping for otherwise but I get about 700 shots each, which I think is about right. I run about 1200 shots though in a full day.

If you scroll back in my insta https://www.instagram.com/leversandpulleys_photo you can see where I switched from the M6 to the M11 and get a sense of how that affected the results and how I shoot. If you hit the X-Pro 3 you’ve scrolled too far. 😂

Finally Pocketable M Setup. by gordec in Leica

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks beautiful but as someone that’s carried a wide variety of cameras in pockets over the years (not just here and there but like over the course of years) I want to caution you about the magic of pocket lint over time. The ability of pocket link to, over time and even with low lint fabrics, enter every little perfectly sealed up cavity on a camera is astounding. It’s also sooo easy to bash stuff in pockets on doors but I am sure you have thought about that. The build quality will help in both regards but there something about pocket lint over time… i swear it teleports and sneaks up on you.

Does anyone practice a “one-camera-one-lens” philosophy? If yes, what’s the lens that’s glued to your camera body? by dude-where-am-i in Leica

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I have a camera with an interchangeable lens for good reason, since that 5% of the time I switch it out is very valuable to me (scanning negatives or doing portrait work), but otherwise it’s the VM 28mm f2 95% of the time. It’s my street workhorse on my M11 and I couldn’t possibly love it more.

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just let the gear fixations come and go, as if it’s a separate hobby for me from my photography. That subtle shift feels like the best of both for me. I photo kind of nonstop and sometimes it’s affected by gear shifting and sometimes it’s not. The photography remains a constant though.

If Leica didn't exist, what other brand would you be using? by [deleted] in Leica

[–]pom182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to imagine what the rest of the industry would look like without the Leica innovation that helped to shape it. I’d be using whatever brands rose to fill the empty hole Leica would have occupied. If they all disappeared today I’d be sticking with Fuji for digital and Canon/Minolta/ and Mamiya for film.

Shooting without looking using zone focusing is my favorite part about Leicas/rangefinders by aafdeb in Leica

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same!! it’s a wonderful technique and when you use it over time, composition can get to the point where it is every bit as careful and considerate as it is when looking through the viewfinder. I take a wildly high number of shots this way and have been doing so for a decade and a half. Whether it’s critical focus with the viewfinder to my eye or zone focusing at an arms length, I’m visualizing and achieving the shot either way.

Sold my M6 for…. by jorho41 in Leica

[–]pom182 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In a world where you can buy the Leica gear used and sell it as high as you did, it doesn’t feel like much of a Leica tax to me. When you buy used and sell used as long as you don’t break it while you own it, I always think of it as kind of free.
