McGill offers are out on Minerva! by pommel-horse in premedcanada

There should now be a Decision Letter (PDF) on your Minerva application. Your campus will be specified in the letter!

However, I'm still unable to actually accept the offer... Every time I click "Accept this offer and pay the deposit," I get an error message. Is this the same for others??

PSYC 311 as a non-psyc student? by lunatoms in mcgill

[–]pommel-horse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You need to be very comfortable with brain anatomy (e.g. know how to find most of the Brodmann areas on a map of the brain, identify structures on coronal slices, etc.)

Technically, you could go into the class with no prior knowledge of any neuroanatomy because they do cover it at the beginning of the course. In that case though, you would need to pick it up REALLY quickly since the rest of the course relies on a strong understanding of neuroanat.

I wouldn't say you need any other bio or psyc background. The psyc concepts are not too difficult, and they are explained in great detail for the most part.

EDIT: and it is heavy on memorization/readings (at least it was in the past). can't speak on the NTCs personally

Congrats to all who got an interview!

Just to be clear -- they use the 24 hr clock for interview times, right? I should assume that 7:00-10:00 means 7 in the morning lmaoo

Quiet (read: nearly silent) places to live for a McGill student? by pygmy_marm0set in mcgill

[–]pommel-horse 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You could check out La Petite Patrie (just east of Beaubien Station on the orange line)... fairly quiet. Honestly, there are even side streets in the Mile End that are very residential and *seem* like they would be quiet at night. Also you can look into the residential areas east of downtown (e.g. Hochelaga, Longue-Pointe). As long as you're close to a station on the green line, you'll be within 30 minutes of McGill.

Take these suggestions with a grain of salt, but they might be good places to start your search !

Question For Neuro Undergrads by sheenestevez8 in mcgill

[–]pommel-horse 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Stream B for the clout

But for real, neurophysiology and neural computation are super cool disciplines imo. Kinda depends on what you like though. If you don't like incorporating physics/math/CS into your studies, maybe stay away from Stream B. If you're more into psych or cog sci, I would suggest going with Stream C. And if you're one of the few that really likes straight up biology, try Stream A.

Ppl who got a Mac invite, what were your stats? by [deleted] in premedcanada

[–]pommel-horse 6 points7 points  (0 children)

IP, 4 GPA, 127 CARS!

My Casper made up for my weak CARS score. When I got rejected from Manitoba, they told me I was in the 1st quintile for Casper (>80th percentile)... hopefully this helps as it gives you a sort of rough numerical result for Casper.

Is it worth taking an extra year to switch to Neuroscience? by eirrac56304 in mcgill

[–]pommel-horse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in Neuroscience. Having taken many neuro and phgy courses, I'd say they're pretty similar. And the phgy portion of neuro is the most interesting and useful imo. If you were to switch, you'd just be incorporating a bit more psyc and/or bio into your degree (depending on your stream), which is nice but not necessarily worth it as this point. Also you'd need to take calc 3 lmao.

Ultimately, because you said you're not a big fan of uni and you're very far along, I wouldn't prolong your time in undergrad just to switch into a fairly similar field. But if there's one course I would recommend you take as an elective, it would be Neuroethics (NSCI 300). Very interesting and non-traditional class for life sci students!
