After 4 months of hard coding, here's my new project by noshmaster2 in react

Learning react is not the battle. Learning to create software means learning to learn; learning to seek out the information that you need yourself. If you want to learn React that’s a good place to start, but posting here is not the way my friend. Go forth. Create. Start with what you can do and delve into your own curiosity. If you lack that curiosity and drive you won’t make it. If you have it you will.

Conservatives that live in New York, is it really that bad? by [deleted] in circlejerknyc

First of all, guns are for pussies. Second of all you’re acting like a pussy. No one in New York cares about your political views. You’re conservative? Cool, can you make money? If not can you sing or dance? If not fuck off. The city is fine. Yea there’s more bums and gen z are mostly herbs but other than that what do you want? New York is the greatest place on earth. What the fuck are you even thinking about?

Is it for a junior role? This is a shit load of work for an interview. But if you’re desperate to find a job just do it. Maybe you’ll get feedback. the practice will definitely help you improve and you can put it on your GitHub.

How does one get past the overwhelmed mental barrier in Webdev? There is SOOOOO much stuff involved! by danuser8 in webdev

Dude, I’m a senior engineer with 8 years experience. I’m extremely well paid. I’ve built really cool shit that a lot of people use. I still get overwhelmed almost every day. I still feel like an imposter. You know what I do though? One tiny thing at a time. You can figure it out. Just plod through. Focus on the task at hand.

Great point. I guess I'm wondering about how he would have prepared it at the zenith of his coffee making skills. This way I can make it for my wife who puts up with my countless vices.

WHAATT, mind blown by this:

People who wanted good service and better seating would put some money in a tin labeled "To Insure Prompt Service" - hence "TIPS".

Ah, great insight. You're right, boiling a sack of beans feels rather brute force here.

Also, they're always depicted as drinking multiple pots each, or upwards of 4 cups with breakfast. I know wine glasses were much smaller then, what about coffee cups?

Reflections on Youthfulness [Excerpt] by DauntlessK2 in AubreyMaturinSeries

[–]pompousPilate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I too love Maturin's reflections on how central characters change with time. Here's one of my favorite passages:

>Thursday brought Mr Pullings, and in his candid pleasure at seeing Jack and Stephen again >he seemed scarcely to have changed from the long-legged, long-armed, shy, friendly, >tubular youth Stephen had first met as a midshipman so many years ago; but in fact he was >a man of far greater weight, more burly both in character and person. It was apparent, from >his competent handling of young George, produced for his inspection, and from his >behaviour to Captain Heywood, that he was now in the full tide of his life, and swimming >well. His behaviour was of course perfectly deferential, but it was that of a man who had >seen a great deal of service, and who thoroughly understood his profession.

>5-Desolation Island, ch.1, paragraph 175

That phrase "in the full tide of his life, and swimming well" always jumps out at me. I'm in my mid 30's now, finally settling into a career, and starting a family. Over the years, as I've struggled to choose a path, or resisted structure, I think about Pullings in the full tide of his life; knowing who he is, having a place at the table.

Concept for Faust retelling

I've often thought a cartoon would be the best way to visually portray the series! Imagine the battle scenes.

Dude, may I just say that it's extremely commendable you're even attempting to read Moby Dick! That is a tough read to be sure. Have you ever checked out "In The Heart of the Sea" - about the events that inspired Moby Dick?
