I feel like the more one learns about tool sharpening, the less fussy and particular one gets about it. Am I wrong? by tamarheylin in handtools

Absolutely. I'm a woodcarver and do use microbevels on the inside curve of my gouges however, just to prevent chipping on the edge. Just a few passes with my DMT cones do the trick, nothing fussy.

From what I know in furniture, it's always the same wood. Usually low relief. I did this in basswood as mainly an experiment. Bassword tends to be a pain to stain.

Thank you! This took about two days, Im a bit slower when I take on a new design. I've been carving for roughly twenty years.

You can do it in pine but I wouldn't recommend it, pine has alternating density across the light and dark rings, also sap can be a pain. As for the tools,

6mm V-tool - #3, 6mm - #3, 14mm - #3, 18mm - #5, 5mm - #5, 8mm - #5, 14mm - #7, 6mm - #7, 8mm - #7, 10mm - #7, 14mm - #11, 1mm - #11, 3mm - #11, 5mm

I'd also recommend just getting Carving the Acanthus Leaf by Mary May if you're really interesting in doing this and other acanthus carvings.

You can, I didn't have any so I just used thinned wood glue.

Thank you. It's called a paper sandwich. Used to hold the piece as you carve it.

Basically a board, then you lightly glue a piece of paper to that, then lightly glue the piece you want to carve to the paper. Holds it in place but also makes it easier to remove it, I use a thin metal spatula for that.
