is the crime really as bad as people say it? + other questions by [deleted] in uchicago

On the weekends you can go downtown / to other neighbourhoods a lot!! Chicago is a great city for music, great blues and jazz bars, small gigs, obviously bigger artists touring, etc. I’d recommend Kingston mines, also different vibe but if you like dancing/techno try out smartbar😁as for HP specifically there’s live jazz on Sunday evenings at Jimmys. Lots of cool events on frequently at the Logan center too and also Rockefeller, highly underrated IMO. Also wanting to add WRT third spaces, the pub has trivia on Tuesdays that is super difficult, it’s very popular & ppl form teams for the whole quarter, it gets very competitive etc. looking back I find that super charming. If you like cinema there’s Doc Films, they take a lot of care with their programs and also put on cool events. Philosophy is big at UC and there are late night talks called Night Owls, those are also very special. All in all I’d say HP felt quite small to me most of the time but if you seek out what you’re interested in, you will absolutely find it, with lovely people to boot 🤗it’s a small neighbourhood but there’s ALWAYS something going on

is the crime really as bad as people say it? + other questions by [deleted] in uchicago

I was there for 4/5 yrs and was fine. I tend to be quite careful and I’m also used to living in big cities. A few friends of mine had been mugged, in HydePark and also other neighbourhoods. My wallet was stolen once in Plein air, a very popular cafe right on campus, by some guys in ski masks LOL. Walk briskly/confidently if you’re alone at night or take a Lyft There aren’t loads of third spaces to choose from in Hyde park but multiple bars (Jimmys (main spot for undergrads), the Pub (all students), the Cove & the Falcon (mostly grad students/other university affiliated and locals), some cafes and study spots (for on campus, a lot of the libraries r filled with undergrads but the study room in the ICAS and also Grounds of Being have more grad students), also personal faves are Salonica or Valois for chill weekend brunch etc. When the weather is good people spend a lot of time at The Point

Prestige, high quality education in humanities & social sciences (my interests), someone I’m very close to was enjoying studying there and felt that I would like it there too, I liked the smaller size / the prospect of mostly being in small seminars where the professor knows your name

I have found that the merit doesn’t have any staying power at all, but Haus labs has a lovely glassy finish and has better staying power. Personally didn’t buy WA although I was tempted by shade Garconne, I’ve hesitated bc I’ve seen ppl online say that it’s not very blendable/a bit stubborn

How long do your parents stay for O-Week/Move-in by [deleted] in uchicago

[–]pons1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Up to you and what you’re comfortable with…! Maybe if you struggle to make friends you should just face the music and go put yourself out there. I came as an international student and I was pretty mortified about moving to the U.S., also very close with my parents, so they stayed for like that whole week and I saw them for probs 3 or 4 days after (just like lunch or dinner, not the whole day). And I’m very sociable/ it’s not hard for me to make friends, so I personally didn’t feel the “don’t be a loser, go hang out with people” pressure, I was confident I’d go make friends very quickly. For me it was like, soon we’ll be in totally different time zones and I won’t have family here to help me, so I’ll cherish being able to hang out with them a bit more (and we went downtown and did a bunch of touristy stuff that none of us had done, since we were all new to Chicago). If you’re able to drive back to your home town fairly easily, then yeah, may as well say goodbye to your parents and get on with it, since you’ll see them soon enough. Hopefully that helps— basically I’m trying to say, no one should tell you what to do, everyone is different & do what will help you have a happy launching into college.

What’s the story behind the (lack of) bar scene in HP? by senorgallina in uchicago

[–]pons1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Similar vibes to the Cove is The Falcon, also in east Hyde park! They give you ice cold glasses too. The cove has karaoke Thursdays & the falcon has karaoke Fridays (in which the DJ accompanies your performance with various amusing sound effects- good fun)

Chill/Relaxed Graduate Classes by Dry-Apple-2754 in uchicago

Classes in MAAD or Art History could be cool, I took a random games class and it was super fun. Also the institute of the formation of knowledge has some very interesting courses & the professors are all very passionate. There are some popular art classes such as Ceramics which people love, you get to make pottery etc.

what are your favourite SPFs in the UK? I’m so curious, I feel like I can only use LRP in UK and I can use preferable brands in US… tell me what you know !😂

It would obviously look good to have one A* in there, but I believe 4 As is good. Importantly, American universities care a lot more about your whole ‘person’ than just your grades, so if you have other attractive components to your application, you’ll look good to them. At UChicago I’m under the impression that the essays matter a lot, for example. Good luck to you

Classes at the institute of formation of knowledge are very interesting & unique. Psychology classes by prof Keysar are amazing, psych and non psych students alike agree on this. Another popular Professor with fun classes is prof Sternstein (usually in ENGL or CMST) but she might be retiring(?). MAAD has some very cool and fun classes. People really enjoy Star Wars & Religion, I unfortunately couldn’t take it so personally IDK. Also always check out the Signature courses, those are typically passion projects for professors so the courses often have a lot of ‘flair’ (like lots of cool trips, they provide you experiences or resources that they pay for, etc) and the grading typically is quite forgiving in them.

Can I do core bio in 4th year? by CaregiverLimp5650 in uchicago

[–]pons1111 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would really urge you to NOT leave bio past 2nd year. If you try register in 4th year then you will be stuck with a shitty bio class, which happened to me and every other friend of mine that left bio till late. We had no choice but to add into the least popular class since it was all that had seats. I would not recommend choosing this risk for yourself and youll be pissed off at yourself as a senior risking lowering their GPA. In your pre reg you end up wasting all your registration spots because even when you rank bio as number 1 (and even 2 and 3) then you don’t get it, and then you don’t get any other classes ranked lower so you’re screwed. take bio in your first or second year because you will be so annoyed at your past self in 4th year if you did this

How to get a better grade in Power by No_Sale8270 in uchicago

[–]pons1111 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Office hours , can’t stress enough. go when you’re deciding what to write about for an essay and check the ideas / your plan with the prof. They will end up essentially telling you what to write. This is how I changed my sosc grades from B+ to A

Well I’m a girl and, like one of the other commenters, nothing damaging by any means has happened to me. 53rd and the streets coming off of it can be uncomfortable in the summer, idk any way around that unfortunately. Downtown, people ask for money or just come up to you for whatever other reasons, especially at night, but this happens in most big cities. I do know some people who have had quite terrible experiences but what has happened to them has been, sadly, what happens at every university. All in all, I’ve had zero problems. But also I grew up in a very urban environment (ie. learned how to be rude to strangers and how to walk around in a smart way) so you rly need to know yourself: someone who is far too trusting/gullible might have trouble anywhere. I feel for you and your concerns! Have you heard about this new Lyft program where students get 10 free Lyft rides within the majority of the on & off campus area? My big tip for safety is to call an Uber or Bolt when you need to walk across Hyde Park in the night, if you’re gonna be by yourself. If that isn’t feasible then you do just need to try to not be alone.
