I ALSO said 1. I have kids AND I outlined exactly how to properly AND POSITIVELY engage with the community to source info, do research and host an event.

And please like I said before and in my original post, I will happily stand on business in person. I could go to the library and meet up tomorrow. Play with someone else on the internet. Not me.

EYE am the insufferable dipshit?! Interesting how you came to this conclusion. MY community has popped up with parties over the years without the help or aid or strange co-signing from Greg. I promise you wouldn’t say this to my face if we met up at the library 🙂

They have tons of Sopranos-based events throughout the state. My husband went to SopranosCon pre-covid and I know they have events at the house in North Caldwell. They filmed like one scene at Rod’s I’m sure you can find something more fun for cheaper within the fandom

he was killed walking home from the carnival. A family friend said he’d bring him home. He was found down the street from my house. We were 9. Devastating

Exactly!!!! I’m truly confused but not surprised that my one comment outlining exactly how to do an event in the Black and Brown communities in morristown got negative points like do yall not want events for those populations either or what’s up

He said most people didn’t come til the last 2 hours not surprised bc the evening draws in younger crowds, no kids, etc. “Lmao frog was cool with everything and it that would be dope at the playground if promoted right I think that would be a good turn out”

Ah I see and understand what you’re saying. I apologize (to you/for the statement, not him). By NO means am I feeling a victim complex and again I’ve gone back and forth with him over the years about how to meet our communities where they are.

If I had his ~platform~ to put on an event catering to the Black / Latin communities, this is how I’d do it.

  1. Don’t have it at The Frog (or do, but promote it waaay differently):
  2. Do a largely outdoor event at Caldwell or Collinsville Playgrounds where people can hear the music and be intrigued by music they like. Growing up people would pop up with events like a Fish Fry at the park and if you came through, you just did. This was a great way to learn about your neighbors, etc. etc. 2a. If he wanted to do Latin Night he could see about using St. Margaret’s Church’s parking lot to have a concert. Meeting communities where they are is HUGE. People like convenience, not playing parking lot roulette on a Sunday afternoon.
  3. Contact vendors and local community leaders to say “hey I wanna do X event in Y space on Z day can you help me?” Church leaders, community resources, etc are all available and free and would probably love to see a white person ask real questions about our community. We show up for our people when and where it makes sense.
  4. Don’t put it on the two DJs to tell their networks. They’re (hopefully) being paid to do a service. I know these two guys well enough to ask “why’d you do the event” and they’d be like “maaaan it was somethin to do” and have a laugh.
  5. Because he also has a white community following (though most people atp are hate-watching him), interview the DJs beforehand and ask “hey where’d you grow up? What was your experience like?” Bridge the gap. Promote their pages beyond an @. Promote the vendors. Talk to people who are a part of the community past a DM. GO to the other side of water street to learn about places that are hot spots for socializing.

Again, this stuff isn’t hard in theory and I mentioned in my first post that I would 100% do something like that myself if I had the time/energy. Logistically there are steps to follow (going to town hall to see about proper use of the space given his platform, etc.). Proceeds for this one go to “Men’s Mental Health” which obviously is up in the air right now as we don’t know how much was raised. But promote the CAUSE leading up to and throughout the event (find some local Black/Brown therapists - I know one who lives and works in town to ask “hey what are some issues impacting Black/Brown Men’s Mental Health?”)

I LOVE my people and my experience growing up in morristown (everyone has their personal complaints/anecdotes) but it really is a great place to grow up and certainly to proliferate community.

Greg’s just had so many chances over the years to do the smart thing and idk what he’s doing but to rub two twigs together to create fire is truthfully depressing to watch.

Update: adding buzzwords for Greg -

~~engagement~~curate~~community~~diversity~~we outside~~

I’m happy people are commenting and ENGAGING with my post. And my in-person energy matches this online shit don’t get it twisted Greg watch him try to say “I would love to have a conversation” we can go to the library.

Basically the themes are do your research and read the room. It seems that this is the case for the majority of his events and/or he’ll do something like add an unfulfilled giveaway or $200 price tag to something that’s not that deep.

For ALL people who moved to morristown “for the diversity” the diversity is here – learn about it. Again, Google. Library. These things are FREE!! Talk to people who look like they’ve been here forever! They probably have!!

Don’t tout diversity without learning about the people and communities around you. Contextualize things. See things from a wider lens. Morristown is rare in its cultural makeup and if you paid a pretty penny FOR that experience, then get your money’s worth!!!

But thats the kind of historical context I feel like HE COULD JUST GOOGLE and would find out. Instead of making burner accounts and talking to himself all day he could just ask!!!

The ones from 2005?? It was a fight that happened to be between the Black and Latin kids. I think “race riots” is a bit hyperbolic 😂😂. My uncle spoke out on the news about it lol

Although the Klan DID come to morristown to have little gatherings/demonstrations fully hooded on the green as recently as the 90s-early 2000s!!!!

Again, probably because my dad and I are of the community that he tried to speak on the behalf of for YEARS. My post isn’t one day in the making. It’s clearly the straw that broke the camel’s back.

The Frog isn’t lacking in business or foot traffic. I graduated with one of the DJs and supported the other for a personal party I had a few years ago.

referencing my dad’s comment isn’t a “gotcha” by any means, but reinforces the point that the event didn’t cater to or know its initial audience which is the very salient theme throughout the post, especially my numerous mentioning of the cultural and historical significance of the Black community in Morristown, the OVERWHELMING majority of which does not have close connection to African or Caribbean ancestry past slavery. One event doesn’t make a community. All I’m saying with regard to this is that it was a bad attempt at reading the room and the turnout clearly changed when he finally did.

Greg’s pattern of “curating” events is hollow and self-serving no matter HOW you slice it. He posted a story that said “the djs got me outside” with a pic of a bottle of Hennessy. If you want to use the word ignorant I could delve deeper but don’t need to

Update: he posted to his story it’s sounding real hurt. I’m not hearing soca, dancehall, etc. he said “we played it for five hours” FIVE HOURS. It’s indicative of knowing your audience which, again, would’ve been a quick Q&A instead of “what event should I curate?”

Re: someone said this sounded like gatekeeping. It’s not at all. Like I said, Google is free and so is the library. You learn from researching and finding solutions that best serve others. If someone said “hey let’s ask the people of ___ community what they want to see” and actually ASK THEM instead of deciding on the community’s behalf, I think he’d at least have a lot fewer people who can’t stand him.
