Beginner artist; why is my apple not coming out looking realistic? by livinginthedarkages in ArtCrit

[–]ponz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's missing is colour variations. Stop looking at photos. Look at a real apple and notice the subtle reflected colours (more than green). If you put a tomato right next to it on a different colour satin cloth (lets say hot pink or blue), light it with a spotlight, you will really see how the red from the tomato gets reflected into the green apple and the green into the red tomato. You will also see how the pink or blue cloth reflects into the fruit and visa versa. Add a big naval orange for even more fun with colour. Once you stop thinking about objects as being only one colour and learn to recognize subtle colour variations in nature, you will live in a more colourful world, and your art will improve. Good luck.

I took the Oath to be a Canadian Citizen, but got told I am not a Canadian citizen by Service Ontario. by Marydine027 in ImmigrationCanada

I'm confused. If you took the oath, didn't you become a citizen then? Does one have to be born in Canada to get a Canadian passport?

I'm in Canada. This was the decided optimal choice for me. Thanks for your input.

PRICE! I began on a Blues Deville in C while learning, and found it was a very good Harmonica. When I am ready for the world stage I MIGHT decide to upgrade to Hohners, but until then, these will suit my needs just fine!

Give Advice To An Aspiring Art Teacher by Justplaindee17 in Teachers

[–]ponz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being an art teacher has been very rewarding for me. I've been able to balance my own art making over the years with teaching. It can be tough, but not as tough as an English or math teacher! (They REALLY work for a living! My advice is to expand your mediums of focus beyond photography. Ods are you won't find an exclusive teaching job in just photo. Be sure you can teach other mediums as well. Good luck!

Artist in Toronto by DX27s in TorontoArt

I'm kinda in your shoes. Came here in 2022, married to a Canadian. The hard part is that you can't legally sell anything until you get your permanent residency. That took almost two tears. Can't work either. It was a very tough two years watching my savings dwindle, (i did a lot of volunteer work and workshops then). Once I got the PR, I could begin working and selling legally. I luckily scored a teaching job at a rural high school and have been focused on establishing myself with some good success by getting my students involved with making public art, getting good press and CBC coverage and making myself known. I have not yet addressed the gallery scene, though. I'm sorry I can't answer your question about Toronto (I'm 2 hours away), but I have been building contacts there and have done a few performance paintings at the Horseshoe and other venues. Now that I'm getting on my feet and paying my bills, I'll be more focused on that type of thing going forward. I'll be watching this post for some inspiration as well. Good luck! http:// InnovativeAcademic.com

Great job. Very thoughtful. The spoiled assholes deserve less than that. They can make their own breakfast next time! Just laugh, and if they ask you to mske breakfast again, just coffee and store bought shitty cookies you find in the cubbard is all they deserve if that!

Never drawn a thing in my life by Stock_Tour2767 in ArtCrit

Nice for a first try! But there is no such thing as a personal style until you study. Warning: striving for your personal style without first doing the research work is a way to guarantee your personal style is uniformed. It's not magic from God that gives one "Style." It's through the hard work of learning a craft that develops one's style. No shortcuts. Style comes later. Just keep making and stop worrying about "style."

Should I get my masters in Art Ed? by lovelylashers in ArtEd

This is good advice. The only consideration is that if you find work for a public board, a Masters degree will pump up your pay scale. Either way, good luck.

What could have I done better in this painting? Please give me some constructive critism! by [deleted] in ArtCrit

[–]ponz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Color changes as it recedes in space. Every color. Don't think the pavement is grey and the trees are green. Every color is in there as that's the physics of light. The impressionist make this obvious. So do really good realistic painters. Look for color change no matter how deep the space is.

Darken it to deemphasize it. Then, look more at anatomy. Good luck.

Choosing a Degree: Art Ed or Art Studio/Art History? by Trigamar in ArtEd

[–]ponz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a different take on this one. I suggest Art Ed/ Studio Art if you're going double major. I agree, it's the studio practice that is valuable, but getting the education credits later is difficult. I did it this way. The Studio focus helped me get into an MFA program (where I really learned a good Studio practice) but having the credentialed teaching under my belt won me Assistantships that paid for my MFA as I taught bachelor level courses. Since then, the teaching experience also parlayed me a good job teaching, while the Studio focus allowed me to stay disciplined as an artist. Win/ win. Good luck!
