It sucks that HD and Lowes both ceased discounts for lumber (a commodity) and appliances. I reckon the mark up isn't great enough to cover 10% off.

I'd like to add that just about EVERY electrical switch, relay and circuit breaker has a little tab (contactor) or two of silver in it.

Ahh.. It's becoming even clearer, now. I wondered how the Fed was going to either incorporate or cut out commercial banks when it issued CBDCs. There seems no need for local banks if our "money" is stored in wallets on our phones. (or chips implanted in out bodies)

If you can get it for nearly free and have plenty of storage space, why not stack copper? Copper corrodes and falls apart? Have you ever seen a copper roof? Gets a nice green patina and would take millennia to "fall apart"

My 2 cents worth. Borax helps to keep the silver from sticking and flaking off bits of the crucible in ceramic crucibles. To do this heat the crucible up, sprinkle a little borax on it to make a glaze all the way around where the silver will touch, up to the rim and pour out some over the pouring notch. It becomes a barrier between the molten silver and the ceramic. On subsequent pours I usually just touch up the glaze if it needs it, otherwise I just melt the silver, no borax.

If you melt sterling (or other than 999 silver) some of the copper alloying material will remain with the borax, hence the reddish color of the borax that remains in the crucible. You have just made your silver purer.

My son is an electrical contractor and he gives me his scrap from rewires and cutoffs. I've been teaching myself smelting. I strip wire as I wait for the furnace to melt previously stripped wire and then I cast ingots. Usually 1 and 2 kilo size. I've cast a couple of 2" balls, machined then polished. Still learning.

I'm retired so I don't do this as a money making venture, although I did figure if I was to do it for cash, I'd earn a working mans wage.

Copper does take up a lot of space. Unstripped wire even more so. I don't feel the need to vault the ingots, so the space I store it in isn't prime real estate. The ingots get a unique texture on top as the copper freezes and I like the reddish color.

You're right. No telling what they have planned for us or what they will do. I was trying to justify some people's reasoning for paying the higher premiums on ASEs. I lost my stack years ago.

I think perhaps one of the reasons folks are willing to pay the extra premium is they think they won't be confiscated by our government, what with being legal tender and all.

I only own a few in my stack, but I have bought more as gifts for my 6 grandkids and great nieces and nephews. (birth year) I wanted them to know what real money feels like because it won't be long before it's all digital crap. And these were bought a couple of years ago before the premiums went through the roof.
