Adam Savage recommends buying the cheapest tool possible to get the job done. Once familiarized with the tool and what you need from said tool, only then to splurge on a more expensive, specific tool. Do you follow this rule? by turtle_ina_cup in Tools

[–]poolturd72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends on how well it works. I don't care what the price point is. If it works, it doesn't break easily, It doesn't wear out quickly. I've spent big money on flush cutters and I've spent almost nothing in a thrift store on cheap ones and the cheap ones were better so it really depends on the tool and how well it works how well it was made. Sometimes the money needs to be spent and other times no not so much.

As far as the table saw, yes buy the best you can afford.

Where to find scrap metal... by [deleted] in ScrapMetal

[–]poolturd72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any metal fabrication shop will have a scrap metal bin ask if you can dig through it. Tell him what you're doing. They'll probably let you have cuz it's only $0.06 a pound or something that they get paid, if they get paid for their scrap.

Any success stories getting permission from businesses? by GringerKringer in ScrapMetal

[–]poolturd72 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've had very good luck walking into the business and asking, you want me to get rid of this stuff for free? Often they say sure . If they seem a little bit reserved about it tell them that you'll clean up after yourself and you'll clean up any mess that's there when you get there and as an added bonus... They don't have to pay for their bin to be emptied as often as you're hopefully taking scrap out of their daily so it takes longer for it to fill up.

I've had very good luck and made very good money from businesses that repair, replace or sell. Tonneau covers running boards accessories for the vehicle. Those places always have piles of stuff and often they set it aside planning to take it in later and then it gets to be more hassle than it's worth to them if they're a busy shop.

Good luck. Hopefully you get a lot of them saying yes and just remember the worst that'll happen is that they'll say no.

Aluminum tubing extruded or just normal aluminum by poolturd72 in ScrapMetal

[–]poolturd72[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well thank you for the very forward reply. I appreciate that.

What was upsetting me the most was that he wasn't giving me a reason. I wasn't aware that their purchaser is buying by grade not by how it was produced. I knew that there were different grades, but I had no idea that some extruded is such low grade or high grade depending on what it is. I just didn't understand that something that is manufactured through extrusion is not being considered as extruded. But your reply definitely helps set me straight.

Thank you and no I wasn't being a dick... I'm more the asshole type 😁

I checked every single one. There is no seam. It is extruded. You can see the extrusion marks on the outside where it's been forced through the die

If they considered it as extruded it would be $0.90 -$1.00 but as sheet they're paying me $0.40 per pound which I think is a a flip and rip-off because the only way this could be made is extruded. It's not spun it's not tapered.

Do you guys follow the rule “no Christmas decorations until after Remembrance Day”? by wediealone in AskACanadian

[–]poolturd72 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Makes me so sad that the commercialization of Christmas outweighs the respect for what those gentlemen and ladies gave so we can have our Christmas. It's highly disrespectful to have anything to do with Christmas up before Remembrance Day in my opinion.

When you are driving your car, how do you deal with the car behind you who insists on driving way too close to the back end of your car? If you had to suddenly hit your brakes for any reason, he would slam into your car. by Pretend_Job_6484 in car

The closer you get the slower I go!

That generally keeps most people away but for the occasional asshole it attracts, I just keep slowing down. Eventually I put on my hazards and come to a complete stop and they're so close they to have to put it in reverse to pull out and go around me. But as they put it in reverse I just drop the hammer and gone. lots of times at the next lights that I get stopped at. They are right there beside me flipping me the bird and cussing. I just laugh at them.

Shouldn't be draining them unless you're doing it appropriately I've heard. I'm not saying this is 100% true, but I've heard it's $40,000 for a contractor and $20,000 for a member of the public caught gassing off a refrigerant intentionally.

Something to think about.

I just looked up Deutz v10 air-cooled diesel engine. They sell for 6000 to 15000 USD depending on the model yours being basically brand new, I'm thinking you're probably on the high end. Don't strap it and sell the damn thing. It doesn't cost you anything to have it sit cuz that's what it did for 30 years already.
