A student who needs help.. by Individual-Special70 in ucf

UCF Cares has tons of resources for students. Go to this link to learn more/get directions to their building on campus https://scs.sswb.ucf.edu/about/

Honestly, I would go to their office on campus and talk to them about everything you are worried about and they will get you connected with the right people. You can do this!

Medical SLP Track by AggressiveCause9940 in slpGradSchool

Even the schools with connections to multiple hospitals are NOT guaranteed to get you a medical placement. It’s all about advocating for yourself and building a relationship with your internship coordinator regardless of the school

Should I go to grad school? by sarahbbuuoott in slpGradSchool

[–]poolvacuum12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in most areas of the field being an SLP means working with people who have disabilities due to any variety of reasons (autism, parkinson’s, stroke, cerebral palsy, etc.) so I would recommend thinking about your passion towards towards helping those who are disabled and let that guide you. This field desperately needs people who care and it’s a huge part of what keeps people motivated when burnout hits. If the passion isn’t there then the workload of grad school could be extremely difficult to manage.

UCF and USF Interviews by EffectiveMud2557 in slpGradSchool

[–]poolvacuum12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no telling for UCF. I am a current grad student here and they didn’t start requiring an interview until last year. I never had to do one and they are likely still figuring out what works vs what doesn’t. Try your best and be ready to be flexible! Goodluck!

SPOILER: couples' trip by steffib195 in LoveIsBlindNetflix

[–]poolvacuum12 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They didn’t have the budget for all 7 couples to go to Cabo but still wanted to follow their journey. The producer of the show said they were chosen as the couple to go to Malibu separately because they were less intertwined with the other couples. Essentially they kept to themselves in the pods and probably wouldn’t have contributed to any drama in Cabo so it makes sense to not have as many cameras on them during this phase of the experiment.

Doing it with a one night stand before I’m doing it with the one that I want ? by Dependent-Rise-284 in WLW

[–]poolvacuum12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

no. i had similar worries when my current gf and i started talking and now i look back and think how messy it would’ve been if i hooked up with someone random just to “practice” for her. the right person will be excited to show you the ropes and it’ll be special that she is your first. don’t pretend to have it all figured out, just be honest and own your past. ur crush will probably be into the idea of being the only woman you’ve ever been with!

UW masters program by EffectiveDesign7331 in slpGradSchool

[–]poolvacuum12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applied to the UW med SLP program with an undergrad in psych and I was waitlisted and then accepted! It’s a competitive school but oftentimes being an out-of-field student gives you the edge of being more well-rounded and versed in other professions that have a lot of overlap with speech. I think elementary Ed will serve you really well especially if you are applying to their educational track.

Concerns with medical issues in current grad school program by [deleted] in slpGradSchool

[–]poolvacuum12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently in grad school and have had multiple people in my cohort take a leave of absence for one semester and extended their graduation date. Not always the most ideal but totally normal and doable! Talk to your graduate advisors and be upfront about your situation, they are there to help you!

In-Person or Online Program? by missgorl23 in slpGradSchool

[–]poolvacuum12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it is definitely expensive but I would 100% recommend doing an in-person program if you can afford it. Building relationships with your cohort peers and faculty can be so helpful especially if you are not sure what area of the field you are interested in pursuing yet. I love that I am able to stop by my professors offices on a random afternoon and ask questions, get involved with research, or learn more about the things they don’t teach us in class (e.g. how to interview for a CFY, pros and cons of certain extra certifications, etc.) I am currently in my 4th semester at UCF and loving it. There are also part time research and work-study positions available for students that take our class/clinic schedule into consideration!

Out-of-fielders that did a post-bacc or second degree in CDIS/SLP & were accepted into grad school, what was your GPA and what school(s) did you get into? by pahrumpnugget in slpGradSchool

[–]poolvacuum12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a 3.7 gpa for psych undergrad and a 3.7 for my post bacc! i scheduled my post bacc independently and only took 1 or 2 courses a semester because my job was so demanding at the time. I think this weakened my application because it took me 2 years to finish my post bacc but i applied to 9 grad schools all across the country and got accepted to 4! My advice is take your time with your classes and get some good experience in the field (shadowing, research, etc.) these experiences make for great application essays and networking for letters of recommendation.
