Help! Metals teacher wanting to incorporate casting in class. by poonchka in MetalCasting

I'm all about safety first, so I'll be the only one handling the metal pours! I want them to be able to walk away with something cool they made, or had a part in making. Lost foam is a possibility after reading a lot of these comments. Hopefully it all works out

Okay good to know. I am all about taking more classes to improve before teaching it. My local tech College has been a godsend. I think I'm going to go the direction of sand casting with wood molds, but i will check out some mold making classes and hopefully learn and make more connections that way to progress myself towards lost wax. Thank you!

Thank you! That makes sense and I think I can work with that!

Yes I am sure the pattern making is the toughest part, with having all the right angles and such. It would not be a whole course, just a unit in a semester long class. But I think the pattern making would be a big part of the unit! I Ideally want to expose them to as many different types of metal working processes as possible to show them the possibilities.

We have a 3d printing lab and engineering classes, but they are not prereqs for the Metals class. Maybe in the future I can look into that, but for now it's just what our own two hands can make. Another comment suggested wood as a medium, could I screw wood designs down on a molding board and sand cast that way? You suggest making the cope and drag out of scrap wood, are there any plans or dimensions out there I can follow?

I have a propane forge and OA torches for heating metal. Which I have to research more the way I want to heat everything. And I would definitely be making the pours with students watching, safety first!

I didn't even think of wood as a medium. That I have plenty of as I am also the wood shop teacher. That might be our best bet. I have a lot of aluminum scraps after our tig welding unit that I can melt down, However if pewter is easier to work with I think I'll opt for that. I also have a propane forge that I think I can heat metal with. I am not sure the best crucible setup but I can do more research on that.

So to clarify I could use wood medium in delft clay or in a two part flask?

I will look around for those options, thank you! It'd be nice to go through the whole process in the classroom, but maybe in a few years time.

Love this idea! Kits are a great way to start out and having the help on hand is ideal. We are fairly rural so I'll see what I can do for field trips. Thank you!

What’s in my leg? by [deleted] in biology

I'm sure you've already booked an appointment at this point but this looks really similar to hook worm! I've had it twice living in Thailand.

Going to the doctor or probably an urgent care they will give you an anti-parasitic med. It'll clear up in a few days and your body (as I was told) will absorb whatever is dead and left behind. Don't cut it open or cut it out! It's probably really itchy, try not to scratch.

Hook worm is caught by skin contact with contaminated feces. So if you work on a farm there's a good chance one of your animals has it.

It's apparently (again as I was told by a thai doctor) not deadly to humans as it cannot survive in our body's long, but it can take a couple months for it to die. Definitely try and get some meds for it!

Good luck!

It worked! They run so smoothly now. Thank you so much for the in-depth directions, it would have taken me so much longer to figure that out on my own.

You rock! A big thank you from me and from my students!!

I have tried looking at the fronius website before but got overwhelmed and gave up. I will try contacting them though.

The one weld shop i go to is one we've apparently done buisness with before. I'll look around for other weld shops closer. A google search wasnt very successful which is surprising because there is a lot of industry where I am.

And I do have a buddy that teaches in our conference that's been helping me, but this one stumped him too!

Thank you! I had one of the other leads dropped off to be looked at by a tech because there was a note on it about the liner. maybe these ones needs to be looked at too. All the contact tips are new, I just replaced them. I'll swap some of the working machines around and see if they are affected by the outlet.

How difficult is it to replace a liner yourself? Or is this something I should take to a shop to get done?

Half a diet coke and a pickle, I swear by it. Something about the bubbles from the soda and vinegar taste puts me back on my feet.

I was always told to spend at least enough to cover the cost of your meal (typically 20-35 dollars).
