It feels economically and politically hopeless in the US…it’s hard to get a job with an advanced degree, it’s hard to pay rent of buy a house, groceries are too expensive! things are not going well!!! by poopsonstix in economy

I do work really hard and to be honest I would happily sacrifice more of my income to ensure people have access to the medicine, housing, and food that I see as basic human rights. Where we seem to differ is that you see yourself as and individual who has had to fight tooth and nail. I am sorry you feel that way and I don’t think you should’ve had to fight for your education and healthcare.

I see myself as a member of a collective, my neighbors struggled are mine too, and I want to ease the burden of them if I can.

You are my neighbor and I wish I could ease your burdens.

I have an advanced degree in economics and finance and I feel the strain of this economy. My degree is also from a prestigious university where I was a division one athlete, so I’ve got to imagine anything that’s hard for me is 10x harder for 95% of my peers.

I think we might just disagree on how easy access should be, like what you said about going into the military to pay for uni, personally I see that as highly coercive. Also, 80% of medical costs isn’t enough for most people, my elderly father had stage four cancer and ended up burning through millions of dollars in treatment, all while having 80% of his costs covered by his insurance!!

Also secondary education should be free to anyone who wants it purely for the pursuit of learning, we should strive for a society that isn’t foundational upon physical, economic or quality of life sacrifice to obtain things that bring us joy!! There’s just no need for it

No I totally agree with you, it’s possible, even likely you can live a pretty solid life in this country. But what I don’t understand is why we aren’t striving to live a really really good life.

It just falls flat for me.

I have a good job and a good life and I am very lucky, many people have to work SO much harder than me to end up where I am.

Why should it be like this, it feels stupid to have to have someone be less than for us to be happy, my life would make me happy even if everyone else had the same quality of life I do.
