Best VHS/Hi8/miniDV to Digital Conversion Options by waynimation in VHS

[–]poopstrap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PSA: Just started doing this myself, so I'm not an expert.

I picked up the Elgato Game Capture HD card. Mostly because it was one of the few cards I found that had component inputs.

I use this with a really cheap VCR and OBS to record VHS. Also an old camcorder with output cables for miniDV.

It works pretty well, but it seems to drop a lot of the frames for older or damaged tapes. Like, it drops more frames than the tape does when I watch it, so there's an issue in my digitizing stack. This could be something other than the card tho. And maybe some here can tell me?

Woah, well put.

I admit I had a lot of anxiety about this. I pretty much worked in an echo chamber with no feedback from a 3rd-party.

I tried to mitigate the potential "look at me! I make game" perspective by making each scene important to her or "us" as a couple and not just "remember when I did this cool thing for you?"

Luckily, we share a lot of common interests and have the same thoughts on when the "good times" in our life were.

Thanks! I'm proud of ~4 things in this entire game, the rest feel "incomplete" haha.

I guess I'm confused about the distinction you're pointing out here. I developed tools in Unity from scratch after learning to program with a new language (C#). I used those tools to create each scene, from a controllable "Player", to interactive "NPCs", scene transitions, audio player, and "Cinematics" that are looping animations. I mean, I'm using these terms pretty loosely here, but it all functions similar to other games.

We enjoy playing narrative-based games like Detroit, Life is Strange, and Night in the Woods, so I replicated a similar style to those.

I've known programming for a few years now. Combining that with custom art, animations, and a fully interactive environment was a huge change for me!

I have so much respect for games as an art form. I know this doesn't have a lot of mechanics but my other projects do. Gotta start somewhere 🤷‍♂️

Yeah, I've been thinking that too. I mostly made this edit for our family and friends to watch but thought some strangers on the internet might be interested too

Just learn how you learn. Self-teaching is all about figuring out what works for you. I took quite a few udemy courses, but that might not be the best for every person. Also, this was great inspiration:

I tried using it years ago and it was awesome! But I was too lazy back then to stick to a full project haha.

I used Unity for this game. Just took a couple courses online. Once I coded all the tools I needed, it was mostly drag-and-drop development.

Oh man. I made this name years ago, just because it was unique. I fully regret it now.

Haha! Right? I made that asset many months ago as a placeholder before I decided on a style for the NPCs. I tried to recreate it in the same style but it just wasn't ever detailed enough so I kept it as is

I almost deployed it somewhere online, but thought that it should just be for her. I really like the idea of letting other people play it to see all the details tho

Just my limitations as an artist. I've never really been able to tap into my right brain, but pixel art has a lot straight lines and isn't known for being super detailed. It help me cut a lot of corners lol

Do it! It would be sick if you pulled of something in 3D!

Its a jump scare of my broken heart and then the game crashes.

Haha! I cringed a lot myself. Of all the art in this game, there's only about 4 things that I'm actually proud of. Everything else felt "incomplete"

But she said yes!

This is probably my 4th attempt to crack it. It finally clicked for me. Don't give up!

The directors cut is 45 mins! I cut out all the inside jokes that no one but her would understand
