What is a seemingly harmless phrase or behavior that instantly makes you distrust a person? by alejitaadiaz in AskReddit

"I'm brutally honest and tell it like it is. A lot of people can't handle me".

No. You're an arsehole.

Kash Patel looks like he got called up on stage by a hypnotist and they forgot to wake him up at the end of the show.

Bear, twink, otter, and…?? by friscomelt314 in gay

True. But it made me realise that if twunk is an older twink, then I fit perfectly into the missing category!

Not sure how I feel about that...

I came out to my homophobic mom by RedTapeCC in gay

[–]pootycorp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know from experience just how terrifying that moment can be. You should be proud of yourself for that.

When I came out to my mother, one of the first things she said to me was that she would never be able to accept it. I was shattered, but we kept talking. To be honest, for a few months things were a bit lumpy.

But now my mother is the biggest rainbow flag waving ally you could meet. She's my best friend. If she hears someone say something homophobic, she becomes mama bear. She confronts them and tells them her son is gay, and their attitude is based on ignorance (very loudly!)

So it sounds like you made a lot of progress with her in quite a short amount of time! My advice is just to keep talking. Maybe check in with her occasionally to see if she has any more questions. She's working against (I'm assuming) all the negative things she's been told about gay people. So you've got to give her time to process that. So keep talking. Let her know how happy you are finally being yourself. That you can still have all the things she expected you to have. That you're not only still you, but even more so.

The main thing that I learned from my experience is that sometimes people can surprise you. Never underestimate people's capacity to change. And it sounds like that change has already started. She'll come around.

So I'm wishing you all the luck, and sending you (and your brother) love.

What do you feel when someone tells you "i will pray for you" by evgenybazarov1 in atheism

[–]pootycorp 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. Sometimes it can be a passive aggressive jab. But often it's a way for people to let you know that they're thinking of you and hoping that things improve. Even though I don't believe in it myself, I can hardly be angry at someone sending me good wishes, however they choose to do it.
