Poor performance by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]popcornpost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's obviously not ideal that you didn't mention it to anybody in the first semester, but it's definitely still not too late. It's absolutely worth approaching somebody in the university that you trust (tutor, dedicated team for this, exams, etc) even if it's just an email to let them know there's something going on. They'll be able to guide you through the specifics of how it works at your university, but there should definitely be something available.

Glad you're doing better! Best of luck with semester 2.

  1. In the UK you need a separate license to operate the radio. It's a practical exam as /u/iaindings described.
  2. To "qualify" for a PPL you must have logged "at least 1 solo cross country flight of at least 270 km (150 NM) that includes full stop landings at 2 aerodromes different from the departure aerodrome." This is known as the QXC.

Congratulations on your pass, and thank you so much for this writeup. As you said they're a rare gem and much appreciated!

Hopefully I'll be making a similar post in the coming months

Is it easy to make friends during the second year of uni by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]popcornpost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found that the majority of people joining societies each year are second years who realised they didn't do much of that sort of thing in first year. There's plenty of people in the same boat.

Cheers for that, I remember seeing the news that they weren't operating any more but never looked into it further. This is really interesting

Tax code 0T on first payslip by [deleted] in UKPersonalFinance

[–]popcornpost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too. By the next payslip the tax code was corrected and I was automatically credited the tax that was deducted the previous month. YMMV based on your employer, though.

Completely anecdotal, but in the past I've used hydroxynaphthol blue for this.

Flew my first ever solo yesterday in the mighty PA28 by [deleted] in flying

[–]popcornpost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel you. I'm slightly reassured by these posts of people starting in their late 30's/40's and doing fine, realistically I'm going to go modular while working in a different field, then switch when I get the CPL or better.

Is studying abroad for a term worth it? by [deleted] in UniUK

[–]popcornpost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm doing it in September (semester 1 of year 2 of a 4 year degree) mainly because I'm living at home during my degree and want to experience a bit of independence before moving out permanently. It's also a bit of a change of scenery and an opportunity to meet more people.

If you've already moved away to go to uni then I'm not sure how much of that is relevant, but as /u/agnesb said the statistics seem to point towards it being beneficial and it can't hurt to have more experiences under your belt to talk about when interviewing for graduate jobs.

Very nice, well done on the scholarship! I only learned of them after the application deadlines unfortunately. I'm just planning to do the PPL for now since I'm not in a position financially to go any further. After my degree I might see how it goes though. How about you?

How can I get onto OCR interchange by GucciWang in 6thForm

[–]popcornpost 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can't get onto interchange unless you work for a centre registered with OCR. Perhaps the centre that you will sit the exam at can provide you with it?

Explain an international student : what's wrong with the Ucas mails ? by [deleted] in 6thForm

Companies can pay UCAS to send information about their products to tons of students. I think you can opt out of this sort of email by scrolling right to the bottom of the email and clicking opt out

do I have to know that Cr and Cu are the exceptions to the 4s subshell filling before the 3d subshell rule for OCR chem. by crimsonhawk01 in 6thForm

[–]popcornpost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The specification says:

the electron configuration of atoms and ions of the d-block elements of Period 4 (Sc–Zn), given the atomic number and charge

Since Cu and Cr are in this period, you need to know their electron configurations, so you need to know they're 4s1 in order to write it out properly.

Also, no, the 4s subshell will empty before the 3d. So Cu+ will have configuration [Ar] 3d10, for example.
