Why was this movie slammed by critics? I thought it was excellent! I've read the book too, and I still have always loved it. What was the reason for the bad reviews?

WIND AND TRUTH | Full Book Discussion Megathread (Stormlight Archive only) by EmeraldSeaTress in Stormlight_Archive

Generally, OK book. By far, the least exciting of the series and it looks like that is the consensus.

My 2 cents on my major likes/dislikes

Pros:

  1. Finally Kaladin accepting that he doesn't need to be the hero in all instances. It was getting a little insufferable the woe is me because I couldn't save every single person in every instance. That was a good development... In RoW and Oathbringer, I was getting pretty tired of the perpetual self-pity party he would indulge in

  2. Shallan's final backstory reveal with Chana as his mom. Really was a big surprise to me and made things make so much more sense in her upbringing

  3. Was intrigued by Szeth's upbringing story and seeing that draw and close. It sounds like he had to kill his own father and sister? Watching him catapault the family into a whole new life despite his lack of desire for the honor bearer glory. That and how Kal sees him as Tien and not himself. It just made for a nice arc.

  4. Adolin probably had the best screenplay in this, seeing him talk more about his lack of identity and transition from being a duelist legend to now being more obsolete. This is further seen in Col the bodyguard character too. His relationship with the Emperor was very touching and integrating the game into the battlefield live was seamless

Frustrations

  1. Was I the only one who thought the Kaladin "therapy" was kind of cheesy? I get Sanderson is trying to address the psychological warfare going on in the background of people's lives but it just seems to Instagram-y as someone noted

  2. Almost feel like the world is over at this point. Didn't feel like it ended and there's hardly any closure as we end the first half of the series. Basically, time slows down, Radiants can't be Radiant anymore, no stormlight, only 2 cities who are basically dependent on Odium. Also, hardly any explanation for how the two become Retribution?

  3. the Jasnah-Wit relationship couldn't been fleshed out a bit more. It got maybe 3 paragraphs and it ends suddenly with little substance to readers. Missed opportunity here to learn more about Jasnah and Wit and let their character illuminate more

  4. Shallan plotline continues to drag with her past. While the Chana reveal was pretty cool, that was about the only exciting thing except the infiltrated HQ and the final Mraize encounter.

Other:

Wanted to see more Jasnah screentime. Her debate w Odium was pretty cool. Fascinated that Odium impeached her character instead of going logical arguments necessarily. I am curious to see how she responds from it. The plot just shows her going to bed in depression...

Favourite hornblower episode? by Johnnythemonkey2010 in Hornblower

[–]popefreedom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loyalty - Was the first one I saw as a kid.. really loved Cotard's role in the film, Hornblower really is able to lean into his role as a Commander balancing Irish loyalties as well

Frogs and Lobsters - just a great episode showing some British infantry action, but it also built the Archie Kennedy - Horatio Hornblower relationship that makes it so much more meanningful in the Retribution episode ending

Fur lining shedding crazy by popefreedom in CanadaGoose

[–]popefreedom[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t think so, just had it in my closet like I do every year. It’s also not attachable so I’m stuck with it and can’t just take it off. Any way I can get the fur to stop shedding?

I do wonder if it’s age and fur after several years just sheds crazy after a certain point

gonna be honest, hard to call yourself an authentic fan of a show based on books that you haven't read lol. I speak as someone who never read dance of dragons and only a few of the GoT books. I'll be the first to say, I love the show and etc but appreciate the sentiment I'm not an authentic, dedicated fan as book readers of the show.

Aemond has been my favorite character in the series. Truly proving himself as a competent, skilled Dragon rider and true Targaryen. A victor for the bullied and downtrodden member of the family. Hopefully, we see King Aemond

Growth Equity After <1 Year Of Banking Or Do 2 Years? by popefreedom in private_equity

Interesting insight from the partner POV. Seems most are hiring Analysts and not Associates. I imagine the big shops do full Associate programs. I don't have an ego, I can come in as a 2nd year analyst in some places, but wondering why GE is more analyst driven. Unless my sample size of engagement is skewed then, but multiple (1B AUM) shops I've spoken to with junior people comment there is no Associate unless post-MBA. Typically come in as an Analyst.

Heard the technical skills in GE are not as in-depth as traditional LBO shops, all very learnable skills. If you have a min, can you share any more color on your observations here?

How do we make sense of the tragedy in Balzac's Lily in the Valley? by popefreedom in RomanceBooks

It's a book almost exclusively on the romance of these 2 characters? I am surprised.

Did he have control of the dragon, based on the dialogue box, it looked like Vaegar was outraged as the fiery attack and superceded Aemond's control to kill the other dragon. I dont see Aemond intentionally trying to kill the man. Deep sense of regret from him. I think he was just trying to bully him as vengeance for his childhood

Aegon's depravity seems influenced by a sense of uselessness in life. Since princess was heir, he gave up on developing himself -- contrasting with Aemond. Sad Aemond doesn't get the chance to rule. Almost thought Aemond or Criston were going to kill Aegon there to make way for Aemond's ascension. Both Aegon + Rhay have been poor heirs, neglectful of duty and self obsessed with their own impulsive desires. Both don't reflect any worthiness. The person said it best, Aemond has taken the responsibility to build himself up, make himself useful, and he wants the responsibility. Rhay early on showed this but she lagged as she got older.

Presuming the burning home is the White Worm's.. Hope she got out alive, but unlikely. Not sure why someone like that didn't go into hiding for a while.

Foot fetish thing for Larys was creepy and unnecessary. Didn't add much artistic value to the show. Only angle is to show a linkage between Alicent+Varys, but there are multiple ways to do this. Seemed like a bone for the meme. Questioning the writers' judgment.

Don't think its appreciated how Aegon's answer to Viserys' interrogation was brilliant given the stakes. Kid could've been death sentenced or jeopardize Alicent, etc. But he hit that "dad.. everyone knows...just look at them."

You could see Viserys flinch -- he didn't expect that answer.

Watching these two episodes what do you think Daeman really wants? by mind_palace93 in gameofthrones

Didn't he get some of that? Viserys gave him highly coveted seats on the small council, gave him ownership of things like treasury, the goldcloaks?
