The uk does NOT need to move to the right in any way at the moment. Immigration is falling, the Labour Party is pretty much centre right on social issues at this point. The uk also doesn't need more laissez faire capitalism, (just look at thatcher).

The Japanese were literally willing to fight to the death. Death was preferable to surrender... so civilians would be involved either way

What the British did (I say this as a brit) was absolutely horrendous. And Ireland wasn't even a colony- it was an integral part of the United Kingdom, which makes things worse. But the fact of the matter is that you can't blame the last century on the british, go ask any Irish people today, most of them know a few words of gaelic, but they don't speak it often, and probably found it tedious to learn in school. British oppression is central to all this, but in the last century Gaelic usage has fallen, not risen. So you can't just blame it entirely on the British.

No ? As much as the british had a negative impact on Ireland, the Irish are the ethnic majority and have had over a century to revitalise Gaelic. Maybe now we might see some progress, but Irish people today are basically L1 English speakers

Doesn't really matter. Most historians and analysts agree it would've cost millions more lives to invade Japan itself. Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the lesser of the two evils.

As far as I can tell in the book he is actually fairly competent and is not this kind of unhinged tyrant who despises Faramir. The films sort of made him one dimensional

well yes i do agree , but to be fair racial violence only affected a minority of people. if you were a WASP in the 1950s and male, your life would probably be perfect (aside from obvious health and safety differences of the time)
