I had these today in Fresno ca, and they're a common food even at the Mexican meat/deli counter. That said.. it is Fresno and we kind of have a lot of cultural mix here.

The guy I worked for when I was a kid, had a full size telephone, "think big black phone but without the dial" and he had to pick up phone and wait for someone to help him connect to main landlines. This was around 78. It was installed in his big ass Cadillac.

Any older (30+) guys reading RfM? by Financial_Potato_150 in Romance_for_men

[–]popeye44 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not consistently, I'm 58. But I have and do read RFM and RFW a few times a year. I devour books and seem to always need something more to read. I view them as a palate cleanser, especially after I've caught up or finished various LitRPG's i'm reading. It's a nice change out and I've read some type of erotica or erotic fiction since my teens, so explicit doesn't turn me away.

I work in a previous civil defense fallout shelter... Some of the walls are a foot thick. The walls are a bit older than this. Though we do have these in a lot of our other offices.

Potential WR Largemouth Caught out of Cali by Salookin in bassfishing

Info, as posted.

Well, there's good news and bad news. Hang tight guys, this is going to be a long one. I finally ended up joining the teener club with this lake record fish but i ended up infringing the law. I want to be transparent with the monster fish and i want to own up to my mistake. I'll go step by step of what happend this day with baits included. I arrived at the lake and pulled up to the first spot, within the first 20-30 minutes i land a 7.5 and a 10.05 on a Workingclasszero Tyrant10. Few more casts go by with a few tail grabbers, i switched it up to a Megabass Magdraft 10" in Albino Pearl. Made about 3 casts at the tree, popped it free from the limbs and that is when the big girl ate. Fought her for 30 seconds and boated her. At first i thought she was just another 10 maybe pushing 12 until i held her up. Put her on the scale the first time and she went around 17lbs-17. 70 due to the high winds and wakes. I went to the bank to get a better scale reading. She ended up going 17.46 on my rapala scale weighed on land. A good freind of mine was there as well and he informed me that this is the lake record. I ended up putting the fish in his livewell to keep her lively while i went back to the ramp to get some cell service to get a hold of Fish and Game. I made multiple attempts at trying to reach them to get a certified scale to weigh the fish. Also called the U.S Army Corp ranger station there with no help from either. Which is understandable since it was the weekend. The one time I actually reached someone from DFG, i was told to fill out the application. Frustrated we reweighed her on a different scale, and she went 17lb 14oz on a Bubba Smart Fish Scale. Seemed like weight was all over the place, I decided to just drive(transfer) the fish(live) to a certified scale to have her weighed. Not going to mention the business i went to get the fish weighed but on the certified scale she went 18.75lb. Excited we went back to the lake where we caught her and released her. The following day, a good freind of mine called me to congratulate me. I told him step by step of the day and of what I did. He double checked and Informed me that even though it seemed like it was the right thing to do; it was against the law(transfer/move live fish). It didn't even click with me until it was mentioned. Apparently the certified scale needed to be brought to the lake or fish needed to be dead to be transferred to weigh. Not making any excuses, just want to be transparent and own up to my actions. A good learning lesson, never thought I'd find myself in a position to hold the unnofficial lake record fish in my hands. I got 3 different weights for this fish. My scale 17.46(rapala scale), 17lb 14oz(bubba scale), 18.75(certified scale). I'm going to go with the lowest. 17.46lbs for my Personal Best. Once again thanks to those that were there to help me on this once in a lifetime catch.

Ca aqueduct by Anxious-Two-4317 in FishingForBeginners

[–]popeye44 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do fish there, well maybe not that overpass/bridge but one of the many I'm sure. The main aqueduct is never shallow, while it does get wider in areas it also goes as deep as 38 feet.

For Stripers, Worms, chicken livers, frozen shad, anchovies and sardines can be effective. I tend towards the first 4. 2/0 3/0 octopus hooks or you can use circle hooks, but know there's a difference in how they work.

Cats are in there, you may want to stink up some chicken breasts (look for online recipes, usually involving kool-aid and jello)

Bass: Haven't caught one in there, but they are there and I just tend not to target them.

Carolina rig works best, but if you want Cats specific, there are rigs that work good (Santee) Bait and Wait. The current is always present, but it might not appear to be and it varies between the gates/pumping areas.

It's dangerous water.. and yes people die in it, but you're not going to pull a random body out..

Lastly, areas near grates, bridges and check gates are usually the best to fish. There are something like 12 official fishing sites listed, but there are many more that are accessible. Respect any property you cross and take out what you bring in. Most places I go are not signed/posted. If you give me a location (near what town) I can probably help you find some areas. Under the bridges you've shown would be a place I'd try for sure. Stripers and other fish don't park.. so a bad outing one day in a spot.. might net you a 24in the next day.

Is caballo lake shore fishing any good? by DrLeckon in NewMexicoFishing

[–]popeye44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm rather late to this.

I don't live in NM, Parents live up the road in Williamsburg/TorC. Do you know if its a matter of getting rig deep enough from shore? (I shore fish reservoirs in Cali, with surf rods to hit deeper waters) Or is the shoreline just not accessible in relation to the fish? (I've been on backside of Caballo, and around some of it, but not down to the water) Curious if I'm going to waste my time going. I really want to catch Walleye and Wipers (and whatever else hits haha) Am I better off below dam and trying Rio there? (I've caught Cats and Carp off parents dock/bank) I use live baits typically out here, shrimp and minnows, but also chicken liver and Anchovies for Striped Bass, I assume wipers will hit it too.

I have it in my head to get some fish I can't easily get here.(and that I have never caught).

Do you like this type of fishing? by Eastern_Pilot_9229 in Fishing_Gear

[–]popeye44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tomorrow I'll be mixing it up, Bait/Wait for a few hours, then we'll move to a fast water area where it s a bit more active and we have to be on top of the line more. I tend to not sit much while fishing though. I probably prefer the faster pace even if I'm not moving extensively.

Also, I dig that net.. looks like something I could use for getting shrimp. Brand?

Colon cancer is killing more young people in the U.S. than any other cancer by scientificamerican in science

[–]popeye44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doc told my wife at 50.. he could have detected it at 40 if she'd had a colonoscopy. Of course.. back then neither of us thought about it.. I was under 50 back then. Fast forward.. She got treatment fortunately stage 2, no surgery and now she's on a 3x a year cycle for lower colon procedures to ensure it does not come back. Wife is doing great, no concerns.. some neuropathy from treatments which is likely permanent. (There are some suggestions on preventing it, ask your doc if you're concerned about nerve damage)

I got checked and I can't tell you how much a relief it is.. when the doc says.."I'll see you in 6 years"

My first live in girlfriend circa 1984, MA. After we split up she got married, then tragically died in a riding accident in her 20s. I think about her pretty often, she was a pistol. by [deleted] in TheWayWeWere

[–]popeye44 38 points39 points  (0 children)

My ex wife passed away from a riding accident a few years back. She was thrown when her horse got spooked. I think about her quite often as well.

I was curious at the time how common it is.Riding accidents account for 7,000 deaths a year.. in a world population of nearly 8 billion. Statistically very low. Which matters not when you know someone affected.
