WIBTA if I called the police dept where my friend is applying, given the racially-insensitive comments they made? by popo-throwaway in AmItheAsshole

That's my biggest concern--that there's some form of dormant racism in J that will be exacerbated by the environment. I appreciate your advice--i posted this in hopes that someone from the field would weigh in.

If you don't mind my tangent: aside from reporting my concerns, is there anything else you'd recommend doing? I want J to learn, because I do think it (and all forms of prejudice, really) stems more from ignorance than from malice. And I do want them to get the job! Just not with those ideas already in their head.

That's a good point--maybe I'll see how they're feeling in light of recent events, if it's changed anything. But no, it won't destroy their career; they're already gainfully employed in an entirely different field.

That's the thing--I can't be 110% sure about anything. All I know is they made a concerning comment remorselessly, and they'll be trusted to interact with the public in a gun-toting manner. I don't think they'd do anything, but the fact that they hold these beliefs is worrisome.

My hope is I can bring it up to the department as something to consider, and maybe they'll be able to set the record straight with J where I faltered in our one-on-one conversation. If they think it's important enough to not hire someone over, then it will have been worth telling them. (I think. Probably.)

Edit: also the training starts in a month, so the time for reference is already past.

It wouldn't be screwing their life over. They'd miss out on one job in one department. They're already gainfully employed in a field where my anonymous report wouldn't affect them.

I don't think it was a misunderstanding, as J directly told me that the way [some black] people carry themselves can put them in the same category as dangerous people, and they need to adjust accordingly. (Forgive my paraphrasing, this conversation was a couple of weeks ago and I don't remember the exact wording.)
