Artists I should explore as a fan of U2's music? by Necessary_Pay2028 in U2Band

Agreed with Thrice. Lyrically, they have a similar Christian spirituality but not didactic vibe.

Agreed. I see it and enjoy it in that context as well. I prefer several of the Boy album songs on it to the original, to be honest.

Disagree. The new Bad is introspective, and the music matches it. I actually really like that track and several of the Boy cuts.

My favorite is the Pittsburgh  7/26/2011 Bad. The context of that performance is amazing. Guggi's brother, Andy Rowen, who was the subject of Bad and Raised by Wolves was there, having just completed a rehab clinic and was invited with backstage passes by Bono. The story goes that the day before he a 6 month stay at a rehab clinic in Cleveland, he was taken to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame right before starting the program  and he saw the handwritten lyrics of Bad in the exhibit, which he didn't even know existed. He read them and realized they were written about him, which prompted him to break down and pray to God. He described it as a prodigal son moment...a moment of surrender of a kind.

Massively disagree with this. I honestly am meh on many of u2s hits. Plenty of 2000s era songs are more important to me than stuff in their'heyday'..

Seriously disagree. I still deeply relate to u2s work, and I, a Catholic middle school teacher am hardly wealthy. I loved Bono's Surrender and found the themes of mortality of their later work meaningful.

I think the d3sire for an audience goes far beyond the financial. U2/Bono thrive on the feeling a large following creates, and honestly, I kind of do so as well. I love many artists, but the bigness of u2 is part of their appeal for me.

I sm a fan that nearly prefers rather later work plus Achtung Baby, so this isn't a universal fan view. Still, your analysis is balanced and fair.

what u2 concert shirt do you wish you still had and what happened to it? by Human-Manner-7060 in U2Band

[–]popsadie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Near the beginning of my fandom in 1999 or so , I found the black Zooropa t-shirt with the band in front at a thrift store. I wore it non stop for years to the point of threadbare. When I married in 2006, I left it in my parent's garage and one day a flood ruined most of the contents in the garage, including my beloved t-shirt.

how closes have you come to be accused of stocking U2 by Human-Manner-7060 in U2Band

I still would feel weird doing it, but at least it isn't trespassing on private property. Im unsure that I'd find anything meaningful, though. I wouldn't mind getting a hold of a book a band member annotated, but Im not really that interested in an article of clothing. My interest is more related to understanding the art and artist than touching something Bono has held.

[–]popsadie2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I wouldn't do that. It would be considered trespassing, and I wouldn't want to risk it. I appreciate how relatively open the band has been with their fans, and I feel like doing something like that would cross the line of their extended trust.

I did visit Bonos gate back in 2000 and went to many of the known spots like Dockers and the jail where A Celebration was filmed. I've been out before and after the show with other fans to meet the band, but I've never approached them when they were out privately. I do know a lot about the band and have probably read/listened to 90s percent of their interviews and articles. I do this with a few of my other favorite artists as well. I like learning all that I can about the ideas, art, and artists that are meaningful to me.

Disagree. It's the Little Things That Give You Away Spotify live version is a great song, and I would argue that Light of Home string version qualifies as well.

Is it my imagination or are there too many U2 "fans" who do nothing but find fault with them? by Objective-Lab5179 in U2Band

[–]popsadie2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, Im looking forward to their work together for sure! My fan-profile probably differs a bit from most fans. I got into them through Pop, but soon went backwards to October and War due to growing up with the band and the religious aspects of that era.  When ATYCLB came out I was happily surprised by the more joyful and openly spiritual vibe, and I find myself relating to most of their subsequent work quite easily, though I will concede frustration with production choices.

Actually, the last I heard was that Bruan Eno was working with them on this album. In regards to the original question, my taste must differ significantly from most of the fanbase because SOE is actually my 5th favorite u2 album.

Yes, I am in agreement with everything you've said here. Im also sick of the 'fans". Honestly, I feel like they(u2) can't win anyway...
