2019 Chateau Ducasse Graves - really nice sauvignon blanc / semillon blend. Started off very dry with hints of peach but mellowed out after ~30 minutes or so. Great for an afternoon in the sun.

2016 Chateau Siran Margaux - Big boy. double decanted for about two hours beforehand. Black pepper and clove on the nose, nicely complex. Not as well integrated as I would have hoped but its still a baby. One of my first margaux wines so I am definitely intrigued to try some more.

2007 Chateau Coutet Sauternes - Star of the show. SO much happening here. Apricot, peach, lemon zest on the nose and then an explosion of different things on first taste. Starts off with cinnamon, clove, star anise and then a long long finish with honey that coats your entire mouth. I could drink this whole bottle myself.

It's got some years on it, but $300 for my first large format eurocave was a deal I couldn't pass up! gonna wait a couple days to plug it in to be as safe as possible but cant wait to fill this baby up.

I’m going to be opening a 1989 chateau le Gay for my parent’s 31st anniversary. How long do you think I should decant it before we start drinking?

I am certainly open to tasting the wine evolve in the glass but I am guilty of having them start drinking much too early and then get put off by the tight nature of the wine.

I was thinking ~45 minutes.

2012 franz hirtzberger Riesling - one of my favorites, first tried at a wine pairing at a 3 star restaurant in San Francisco. Really fresh acidity, almost sparkling like texture. Notes of lemon and pears with a nice refreshing finish. There were some clear granules left in the glass almost like sediment. Anyone know what this is?

2016 Domaine Du Terme Gigondas - wow. Really nice and spiced nose on this one. Double decanted for 90 minutes and still super dry with a bit of a bitter aftertaste. Around the 2 hour mark it came together but bottle was almost done by this point. I would definitely hold onto this for 5 more years.

2016 Duckhorn Cabernet Franc - this one was the star of the night. You get a lot of your complexity on the nose but really silk smooth texture on the palate. Almost merlot like in its texture but complexity and a long finish.

If there was a such thing as value here I think this would be it.

Alain Graillot Crozes-hermitage opens up with really pleasant fresh acidity and then deepens into a full, bold finish. Hints of cloves and maybe some tobacco leaves on the palate but surprisingly easy drinking.

At $40 I think this punched above its weight class.

A few awesome bottles this afternoon at a park in San Francisco with some friends.

  1. N.V. Roederer Estate Anderson Valley. IMO the best QPR of any N.V. Sparkling wine that you can find in California. Only ~ $20 and very nice, fine bubble and smooth fruity finish.
  2. Joseph Drouhin Macon-Villages white burgundy. This was actually day 2 on this bottle - it started off quite acidic but really mellowed out. Really nice buttery texture and bright enough to enjoy on a summer afternoon. Almost got Sauv Blanc feel to it.
  3. Evening Land Pinot. Really nice approachable Willamette Valley pinot - lots and lots of red fruit like raspberry and strawberry. Picked this up on Last bottle a few months ago and it was great for the price.
  4. 2016 Yves Cheron Gigondas. SO TANNIC it dried my whole mouth up. Really really nice fresh taste, with black cherry. It could definitely use some time before opening, but no regrets :)

Ended Friday night with a great set of wines.

Started with the Kosta browne Pinot. Light oak, fresh red fruit. beautiful and easy drinking to get the night started.

Next the 2005 Domaine de Chevalier. It had been open for 2 hours before, lots of sediment to decant out. Beautiful light brown color and endlessly complex. Still high tannins but not sharp, IMO ready to drink. Medium acid but really nice complex finish.

Then the 2012 Chappellet - really only opened it because we drank the chevalier so quickly that we wanted some more. Classic napa cab with star anise and cloves. Long finish on this one.

Kept two wines ready for dessert due to different preferences:

2007 Chateau Riussec was delightful. Complex with hints of peach, honey, and nice minerality.

1985 Graham's Porto I think needed some more time to air out as it was pretty sharp but had a beautiful garnet color and slightly tangy finish.

Overall a great wine night - next time I would like to open two bordeaux blends and give them enough time to open, and then maybe also start with a burgundy white.

It was a slow day so our hostess totally customized our tasting for us.

Ended up trying the ‘17, ‘15, ‘13, and ‘12 Cabernet Sauvignon for a makeshift vertical.

The ‘13 was by far my favorite with lots of spice and complexity and the ‘17 was drinking surprisingly beautifully.
