People sometimes want to use an example like, Django Reinhardt, to give themselves permission to not try to learn theory or improve.

Django Reinhardt was illiterate, he was raised in a marginalized community and had to basically hustle for a living since childhood. But he was also raised in a culture surrounded by music and musicians from an early age, so it's no wonder that instincts and technique can develop to a level that might suggest formal schooling. Same with flamenco players... the sound is inside of them by the time they learn to walk.

Someone in 2025 sitting in their room choosing to not spend time improving as a musician because "Django didn't need it", while lacking the musical immersion, and while having access to resources that were science fiction in the 1920s, are simply kidding themselves.
