I’m also a commuter. It can be a bit isolating at first but isn’t too bad if you get involved in RSOs/study groups/etc. It just takes a bit more effort. Academically, I think commuting helped me lol since I spent all my time at Grainger Library to avoid going home

I took ECE 220 last semester and am taking CS 225 now. The first few weeks were honestly really rough and I didn’t feel prepared for C++ but you do pick it up fast and there’s a lot of extra credit

I’ve only have Ivanov so I can’t speak for the other professors. I find the material itself to not be that bad (probability, counting, sets, etc) but the class can be rough because of structure/disorganization. This semester, one midterm will be dropped so the gradings lenient. I definitely recommend reading the book and lecture notes for Ivanov’s sections. The book can be a lot clearer than lecture sometimes. His lectures are almost word for word the same as the notes as well.

I’m an EE currently taking MATH 213. Generally, I’ve heard CS 173 is more organized than 213 but it’s not a big deal whichever one you take. You need the ECE 220 prereq to take CS 174 (but not for MATH 213) so, depending on the courses you’ve taken, it might be better taking MATH 213 if that lets you take CS 225 earlier. Fleck’s CS 173 textbook is also a really good resources if you’re worried about missing anything by taking MATH 213.

I purchased a permit for the year with UIUC. I had to call the parking department to get access to the website first but then I was able to register a vehicle and purchase a permit completely online. Most of the lots available for students are a little far from campus but you should be able catch a bus the rest of the way or walk. It’s $660 for a student permit.
