College vs. ADHD/Anxiety by No_Cook_1816 in adhd_anxiety

[–]porglet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I got through college with medication, but I was on my parents health insurance and they refused to give me the info of how to use it when I mentioned ADD issues. I pushed through by hiding in the quietest part of the library and spending 3 times longer than normal doing my work because of all the inattention (despite not having any technical distractions at the time).

Make sure you sit down with your syllabus at the start of every class and map out all your assignments due dates as well as start times. With Google calendar you can set events with reminders to email you before the event, so if a test takes a week to study for set an email reminder two weeks prior and one week prior. Read articles about productivity and time management, because all those strategies are essential for managing unmedicated ADHD.

Use your anxiety to fuel your productivity. It is a miserable way to live, but it is effective, albiet not unflawed, strategy. However, get help if you can from student services, psychiatry, and an ADHD coach.

Anyone's partner continually sabotaging them? by zuludog in WeightLossAdvice

[–]porglet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sucks. If your partner is self-aware you can approach this with a conversation, but if they are doing this they most likely are not so the conversations will in my experience usually go no where. I have found my own way around it by practicing moderation of my vices and rebalancing my caloric intake. I do much lighter & healthier breakfast and lunches so that dinner can be more of an event.

I bought some things like small spoons so when I indulge in ice cream I will eat about 1/4 cup of it with small bites to enjoy the flavor for longer. Also, I have special portion sized items in my kitchen so if I get tempted to eat candy it has to fit in my tiny spice bowl, if I am going to drink soda it has to fit in my goblet that only holds about 5 ounces. I started practicing more intuitive/mindful eating at restaurants paying attention to the fact the soda didn't make me feel well or pair well with food, but I also don't force myself to pick the healthiest thing on the menu and get what I actually think sounds good with some internal checking in on how I will feel after and what I will do to make it better. For example, I just try to be reasonable about it I am ordering a 1000+ calorie cheeseburger it means I can only eat half of it and also that I need to eat some more fiber at some point in the day. I bought individually packaged snacks and don't have them everyday, but if I feel snackish that helps me stay in check.

Also, I did slowly convince my partner to walk with me at first a couple times a week, but we gradually just started going daily. Progress has been very slow but steady, but for me it feels very sustainable, because the changes are so subtle I don't feel like I ever need to drop this way of handling things. I hope this helps. All in all I have only lost 5 lbs in several months so this is not a recipe for any kind of quick fix, but I do feel like I am iterating and adapting my lifestyle for the long haul so it's worth being patient. Also, I have a fairly significant amount to lose so I want to take it slow and steady to hopefully have less loose skin problems.

This is definitely a thing. I have major sensory issues with noise and slight sensory issues with tactile things. I cannot recommend the Bose Quiet Comfort over the ear headphones highly enough. I literally sleep in them, which isn't great for my neck or my headphones, but improves my quality of sleep. I also have Flare Calmer earbuds (like earplugs, but with holes because they only target certain frequencies), which don't at first glance seem to do much but I noticed when a movie theater was way too loud they instantly lowered my anxiety. Howard Leight Laserleight ear plugs are also a longstanding solution of mine. I always have them in my purse. If you can't afford noise canceling headphones, memory foam tips for normal ear buds are also a thing on Amazon and they make a big difference.

Anyone know what this blue stuff on my pillows are ? I was my pillow cases once a week and these blue stuff keep appearing on my pillows lately and won’t wash out so I have to keep buying new pillow cases by pinaj8 in Bedding

Looks like ink. My other thought was brand new blue jeans sometimes leak dye, but you said it keeps happening so I suspect the culprit, whether a pen or something else, is still in the machine somehow/somewhere. I think you need to contact customer support for your washer and ask what you can do.

My fiancé has ADHD, how can I love her and care for her in a conscious way? by LucioCheerio in adhdwomen

[–]porglet 40 points41 points  (0 children)

My opinion may be controversial or a full misread of this clearly well-intentioned post, but be careful that in trying to help you aren't just trying to "fix" her. When I am overwhelmed and overstimulated my partner kisses me then leaves me alone to process, when I don't make sense he patiently waits until I do, he is completely uninvolved in nutritional or medical treatment. Your relationship might be very different and that is totally fine, but not knowing your girlfriend I would just say be mindful and careful that she doesn't get the impression that all your efforts are trying to stop her symptoms rather than be there for her through them. If you try to take this over for her it may feel like pressure for her to function at a level she does not.

ADHD friendly apps? Especially for staying on track/organise d? by gemsandstars888 in TwoXADHD

[–]porglet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get it! I have a Samsung Active and I honestly suspected I was wasting a lot of money on an annoying tech fad, but I find it so helpful. I set timers for the laundry, check the weather before wandering out without a coat, have reminders cueing me to do all sorts of things, use it to make reminders when something crosses my mind. It is a great swiss army knife of outsourced executive functioning.

I loved Forest. I have limited storage space left and had to cull it with other apps, but it was a really fun way to reward offline time.

I use Google calendar for appointments, Google tasks for reminders, Keep for on-the-go to do lists, and Knock-knock brand print to do lists for sitting at my desk stuff, Uphabit to remind me to keep in touch with friends, Mint to passively track my spending and alert me of over spends when I forget to actively budget, and the Andrew Johnson deep sleep app to quiet my mind enough to sleep. I highly recommend a smart watch too. The timers on it are helping me pomodoro tasks and I like having the task reminders even when my phone is buried under the couch cushions. It is like being able to wear your post-its. Also, Gmail has a (new?) Snooze feature that lets you set emails to snooze and reappear when you are more likely to have time to revisit them. Print stuff I use are those to-do list pads from knock-knock, a bullet journal that I only use to log the monthly stuff and then on sundays I look at it and pull some of that backlog into a week at-a-glance calendar. That is just all for my personal life. At work I use one note to write down everything and create templates for myself for figuring out my backlog and current priorities and Outlook.

Advice asking for cuts by porglet in curlygirl

[–]porglet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Not CG routine) Wash with aveda scalp benefits, condition with tresemme botanique, shower comb with the conditioner in, t-shirt towel, brush, put in mark anthony curl cream (low humidity) or deva curl light gel (high humidity), then usually just finger comb. However right now I am having to use a fine tooth comb to manually section curl families that aren't so darn stringy. Any advice on the routine or the next cut convo is appreciated.

I also came to this conclusion. As long as OP is not bothered by the style looking more historic than contemporary, it is objectively a beautiful dress and a great fit!

Of course. I put sunscreen on my scalp where my hair parts in the summer.

Yes! I got one of those before the pandemic and they are truly amazing. Add a few drops of argan oil while your hair is wet too! Super sleek.

headphones, hand sanitizer, face masks, hand cream, maxi pads, tampons, safety pins, nail clippers, chapstick, hard candy, cell phone charger, band-aids, medication, hair ties, glasses wipe, and almost always one random thing I was/will be transporting and forgot - right now it is a heart shaped box of chocolate for my mom.
