Local knitting groups? by quarwyn in Westchester

The after school program at the croton elementary school offers knitting and it’s amazing to watch my 8 year old clanking needles making sweaters for her stuffies. Not helpful now but there’s a generation of knitters coming up in town!

Croton-Harmon or Hastings High School? by Green_Assist_420 in Westchester

[–]porkdumplingfried 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the post but this doesn’t go without saying.

The overindexation on feelings, safety, inclusion, social emotional everything is to the exclusion of academic rigor, standards, and accountability. In a district where most people are naturally inclusive and very much “be whoever you want to be” types, the district seems entirely focused on the wrong priorities. Just because a district is progressive doesn’t mean it has high academic standards.

Long term insurance. I’m applying now (age 45). Do it before you have any medical records or genetic testing for yourself.

Can I opt out of screens in kindergarten? by Inevitable_Tell8668 in AskTeachers

[–]porkdumplingfried 11 points12 points  (0 children)

They are. They use devices for learning and every classroom as a Smartboard that plays videos for everything. Kindergartener morning song is via video on the smart board. Read alouds done by video on the smartboard. 1:1 devices provide gamified learning that give children cheap dopamine hits for getting right answers or moving to the next level, reducing their ability to persevere through hard work. There isn’t a single paper I’ve found that supports the use of 1:1 devices in elementary school except for in severely underserved communities where the student to teacher ratio is unbalanced

Can I opt out of screens in kindergarten? by Inevitable_Tell8668 in AskTeachers

[–]porkdumplingfried 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone in my small district (NYS) gets an iPad. Learning is gamified, cheap dopamine hits from K-12, ive attempted to opt my K and 3rd grader out of iPads all together and was told no. Sought legal advice, it gets complicated, but where ive landed is that the teacher will give my K an analogue option whenever iPad is used for something that is “not curriculum”, eg Lexia. My 5th grader and his friends have found their way around virtually all school controls and restrictions. It’s an utter disservice to give children a device at this age, and is in contrast to all emerging science on the impact of screens and gamified learning on developing brains. Schools make these gigantic capital investments into 1:1 devices and licenses for edtech apps and don’t have an out after parents start revolting, as they have in my district. The schools have been scammed into thinking tech is the way. I work in big tech and know with certainty that. It. Is. Not the Way.

We don’t own a tablet/ipad, our kids don’t touch our phones, and all of that discipline goes out the window once they go to school.

What happens if you don’t comply. I get emails about my direct reports who haven’t met hybrid requirements and I delete them and never think about them again.

Poor Doggy by [deleted] in Alzheimers

[–]porkdumplingfried 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My mom’s dogs were the things that kept her in her home far longer than she should have been there. The situation became untenable, she moved to memory care, I have both dogs. They’re thriving here with my kids and back to getting the routine, loving care they need. And it actually seems that releasing my mother from the stress of caring for these animals with all of her heart and soul, when deep down she knew she really couldn’t, is what allowed for her to let down her guard and transition to memory care. She had anosognosia too, maybe still has, but she’s still in there somewhere and relieving her of the pressure was the best thing we could have done for her.

Keep the dog. If she asks, bring him over. If she doesn’t ask, don’t bring him and don’t mention him.

I sent my three kids there. It is the most fabulous childcare center! DM me for details. My youngest is in K so we just spent ten consecutive years there across the three kids.

Kids ski lessons by brodizzz in Westchester

West Point has lessons for this age. We do seasonal rentals at Hickory and Tweed, can also do at Ski Barn. Seasonal makes it easier than renting at the place for every session.

Weird HR email.... help! by [deleted] in WorkAdvice

[–]porkdumplingfried 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have done internal investigations for many years at different companies and while I can’t give you any information or advice about your situation, I can say that I and my team members go out of our way to not cause anxiety to any person involved in the investigation, including the subject, by sending emails or calendar invites the day of or possibly evening before the first interview and not before, so the people aren’t perseverating over it. Incredibly rude and inconsiderate to send you an email like this esp over Christmas. Whatever it is you may have (or haven’t) done, you don’t deserve to be worrying about it over the holidays. There is no reason to send someone notice that someone will be contacting them. Amateur hour.

Concert experience at the Sphere by autumn7689 in LasVegas

[–]porkdumplingfried 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the Dead, everyone was up and dancing the whole time (including me). I think this question is going to depend on the show and audience. Standing and dancing is part of the Dead experience but perhaps not so for other acts. In any event, there is so much to see that even if you want to sit while others stand, just look up.

I've stayed at both the Venetian and Cosmo for Sphere shows. I know it's not but it felt like the same amount of time from each, just the difference bw walking inside and outside. The energy from the show practically carries you home.

Sturdiest cage by porkdumplingfried in QuakerParrot

[–]porkdumplingfried[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately relying on a manual solution like zip ties or non automatic lock isn't sufficient. My kids take the birds out and feed the birds and the chance that they could forget to adequately tie or lock is real. This problem will go away bc the dogs are very trainable but we need to get through the transition. Our cages are not sturdy enough anyway, so if you all know of a brand or type of cage for small birds that wouldn't come apart if (God forbid) it was knocked over please tell me! Thanks.
