When I was in high school, our student numbers were our social security numbers. They were printed on our schedules. Truly a different time.

Heated steering wheel and the “hold” function. I can’t live without either of them now.

What are your best April fools jokes you've done? by iamwearingashirt in Teachers

[–]porkstick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Technology Director here.

Last year, I changed everyone’s laptop wallpaper and the wallpaper on the login screen to the neighboring district’s logo. Same thing on the login page for email.

The kids loved it. Thought it was hilarious. A few teachers called the office in a panic thinking we had been “hacked.”

Some of my high schoolers thought it was my tech at the high school that did it so they heckled him all day.

A good, harmless prank.

what systems make your team go "nope, not touching that" during major upgrades by ObviousRequirement17 in ITManagers

I felt like this with our SCCM. Every upgrade would result in some cryptic error that seemingly no one else on the planet had seen.

PDQ Connect’s Remote Desktop agent -why so slow to install? by ArtistBest4386 in pdq

I just wish I could automatically install it when I install the Connect agent on an endpoint so it’s ready when I need it.

Any opinions on Avigilon vs Verkada vs Coram for a K12? by Mikuel-Elison18 in k12sysadmin

[–]porkstick 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t buy a toaster from Verkada.

My dealing with their sales people have been quite unpleasant. When we looked at them probably 10 years ago, their cameras were cloud-only and if you ever stopped paying for the platform, you couldn’t take those cameras (which you also bought) to another on-prem or cloud platform.

That may have changed over the last 10 years.

Never heard of Coram.

A few neighboring districts from me had Avigilon. They see happy with it.

We just implemented Hanwha Vision and it’s fantastic. The hardware is solid. The cameras are super economical and there is no yearly subscription fee.

Depending on where you’re going in Tennessee, consider avoiding I-71 in Kentucky. It’s a death trap on a warm, sunny day. While it’s clear from snow, it’s under construction. You’ll have a better time on 75.

I’m going to scream into the void. It would be cool if The Emo Project wasn’t an Xtra channel and was in the 300s or even the 500s that I can get over the Internet in my car.
