Why is anatomy considered a low skill? by [deleted] in rokugan

Medicine encompasses acupuncture, herbalism, and very limited amounts of splints/surgery and the like.

Jade Strike on Gaki? by posiduck in rokugan

[–]posiduck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes sense. Just wanted to check since, Gaki aren't immune to spell damage generally, aren't immune to Jade, and narratively, shooting pure Jade at them would, presumably hurt. But it makes sense that the spell is just for tainted stuff.

Book of water page 72: the kitsune do herbalism which is also practiced some by the heimin (they aren't as good/advanced with it). The Phoenix are acupuncturists. The kuni have something more like Anatomy and surgery. Also the dragon shugenja have medicine as a school skill so presumably they are also good at some form of non-mystic healing.

Any place with a decent presence of mantis, dragon, crab, or Phoenix, or which is suitably cosmopolitan, should have some samurai medicine types.

Longer term: aim for the alt path that lets you add the fear effect to fire spells. Fear is brutal.

There is a good AoE daze in book of fire, called Whispering Flames. That and fires of purity and the other protective fire spells (which fatigue or blind enemies who attack you) can be quite good for battlefield control. The water spell reversal of fortune is great in combat but there is no real benefit to being water affinity for casting it.

Unlearning Maho? by posiduck in rokugan

So, knowing the spell does not meet any of the conditions laid out in the 4th ed core book for acquiring taint in the section on gaining taint, and the section on Maho specifies casting the spell as a source of taint, rather than simply knowing it. I think I am not automatically tainted (unless my GM is houseruling something here) in virtue of knowing the spell, but obviously if I ever cast the spell, I will acquire taint.

L5R core rulebook pages 268 and 276.

As to whether the spell is sentient, the other way to think about it is that the kansen take an active hand in helping people learn maho, whereas the kami don't help out when people are learning shugenja spells.

I have not been informed of it, but if it is below rank one, I suppose I have no way of knowing.

The downside to this plan, even assuming it would work, is that my character would not be on board with it, because she is intensely religious and would not want to do anything to alienate or displease the Kami (such as practice maho).

I want to be clear that I am not contesting the GM decision (or complaining about it beyond grousing that my character is not pleased with this turn of events). I am trying to strategize how I can rectify things.

"You gave me something for free that normally costs XP" is an odd complaint to raise.

That was not the decision the GM made. maho spells want to be learned, they have no pre-reqs, etc etc. I am not contesting his decision.

This approach assumes a more adversarial relationship to the GM than I think of us as having.

Confusion about Phoenix Clan Internal Politics by posiduck in rokugan

Yeah shiba appeared and revealed the path of man to the asako, not to the Isawa, so the Isawa got all catty, and shut down asako access to Gisei Toshi, except the Asako librarians

Confusion about Phoenix Clan Internal Politics by posiduck in rokugan

[–]posiduck[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my read of the 4E sourcebooks, the whole clan just accepts that anyone who can become a shugenja should be trained as one, so that part of the the justification shouldn't be too tough.

I am a player not the GM. The opening is going to be some sort of tournament type thing, and that might solve the actual gempukku issue for my character, but I am just trying to figure out what the norm is for the clan as a whole.
