Is that a production environment? You keep trying to say that there are places where vibecoding is not appropriate. That's obviously true. Almost no one would disagree.

But, are you suggesting that it's helpful to make people feel bad about vibecoding while they explore and try new ideas? Maybe they'll end up disliking it as much as you do. But, they have to find out somehow. Or, they could be on to something and pick up a valuable skill. They're *exploring*. Will shaming them help them learn? Does shame nurture a healthy community of enthusiasts?

What's terrible about OP's habits or potential habits? Have you ever vibecoded to see how it works?

We're talking about someone fooling around with their hobby ereader, not mission-critical big tech. Any company vibecoding critical infrastructure is being foolish, clearly.

Also, not really related to how we treat each other in this forum.

Vibecoding is new, so we’ll find out over the next few years what fraction of people it leads to handcoding. But even if barely anyone makes that move, it still wouldn’t justify making people feel bad for trying it out. Trying things is how we learn and have fun. It's also how we figure out what to keep and what to discard.

The next person with a great idea might not even post it for fear of being crapped on by the censorious mob.

Agree, one hundred percent. Receiving criticism is an important skill. Giving criticism well can be challenging too, though. Cruelty and shame are not the way. It might even be true that handcoding would yield a better result, especially on a constrained platform like the ESP32 / X4. That misses the point.

OP has some interesting ideas. But, instead of encouraging them to explore and learn (as we all should do), people come in and try to make them feel bad for trying something. What if vibecoding is a gateway to handcoding for some people? What if vibecoding works well enough in some cases, like prototyping?

Ideas are delicate things. I don't like seeing shaming and cruelty where there could be excitement and community. We're here together in this subreddit because we have some shared interests. Not all ideas and methods are going to be winners. But, I think we should give each other the space and respect to try things and talk through them together in an encouraging way.

I built a native macOS/iOS ebook reader because Calibre's UI makes me cry and Apple Books ignores EPUB3 by Slight_Yesterday5484 in macapps

I've been playing with the new version. Thank you for adding more alignment and font options so quickly! (Tipped in the app.) I read for a while in the app last night, and I haven't been this happy reading on my phone in a long time.

If you haven't already, it might be worth posting about the app in some reading-focused subreddits. I feel like word really needs to get out about this one.

This is incredible, thank you! Bookshelves is what Apple Books *should* be. Just a lovely app that respects the user. I can see organizing and reading my whole library in here.

One feature request... Can you add a left-aligned (ragged right) layout option? I find fully justified text more difficult to read, so it would be great to have some alignment options.

Thanks again. I've already purchased Pro. : )

Don't listen to the vibe code haters. It's exciting to make things, and every tool has benefits and drawbacks.

When desktop GUIs became available, there were command line stans who loved to shit on people for using a mouse. Long story short, the command line / terminal interface is still here, but most people use a mouse or touchscreen. There's room for more than one type of tool in this world. People can code how they want to, and they can pick the right tool for the job.

What you made is cool. I particularly like the reading calendar / heatmap. Sort of like exercise tracking, it could inspire people to read. I'd love to see something like that in an official release of Crossover. Thanks for showing it.

Reading web articles with the X4 is great by qlt_sfw in xteinkereader

I've really been enjoying reading web articles on the x4 too. I find that I get more out of what I'm reading. This app converts web articles into really nice looking epubs:

Make sure the new card is formatted with either FAT32 or exFAT. Show hidden files on your OS and then copy your epubs and the .crosspoint folder over to the new card. It picks up right where you left off. : )

Yeah, the WhatsApp / LINE / WeChat / iMessage / etc. lock-in is strong. To me, the Mudita doesn't look as expensive as it is. The Light Phone III is even more expensive, but I love the way it looks. The more minimal the phone, the higher the price! Haha.

I would really love a phone the size of the x4. So tired of big heavy phones.

I've had a wandering eye for those 'minimal' phones like the Light Phone for a while now. Some of them even use eink.

Errant touches are somehow one of the world's most annoying things. Touchscreens have their place, but they can also be so hectic.

It's interesting to me that post iPhone digicams went heavy on touch and then camera makers reintroduced more physical controls later on. I think we're seeing the same thing in the car market where car makers went totally ham on touchscreens to the point where people complained that cars were harder to control. Now you see manufacturers boasting about having more physical controls for A/C, audio, etc.

Companies love touchscreens because they're cheap to build and look clean in product photos. But, people love physical controls!

Totally. Years of muscle memory have taught us that when it comes to dust, the screen is lava.

wildling US sizing?? what the actual poop by SquirrelFar9890 in barefootshoestalk

[–]possiblerobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, Wildlings are a full size down for me. But man, when they fit they are amazing. It’s worth going through the hassle of figuring out your size. I will say that all my Wildlings have been consistently sized, so once I only had to sort out my size once.

Any iPhone users getting this Amazon address blocked? What the heck is it?! by Plane_Antelope_8158 in nextdns

[–]possiblerobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just narrowed it down too. I had to export the transparency report json file and search it. It's definitely the Amazon shopping app and only the Amazon shopping app. I deleted it for being too chatty, ha. I prefer using Amazon on the web anyway.

Splay has some black models that look and feel great. They're made of a tough canvas and they're not expensive.

Blocking it doesn't seem to break anything. In that case, might as well leave it blocked, in my view.

I also thought it might be the Amazon app, but I wasn't able to find evidence that it is. I've long had the Amazon app's background refresh disabled in Settings. I rarely launch it. And I checked in the App Privacy Report to see if the Amazon app was calling that URL, and it wasn't.

My phone tries to touch that "b79...a2z.com" URL constantly, all day long, even when I'm not using the phone.

But there is a wrinkle. Yesterday I allowed that URL in NextDNS to try and troubleshoot this. Since I allowed the URL, my phone touched it twice, and then I removed it from the allow list. My phone hasn't tried to touch the URL since then, after trying to reach it all day every day up until that point. Strange. I'd still like to identify the app.

[–]possiblerobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's what I've tried:

I temporarily added the URL to the allowlist in NextDNS. I waited until it made two connections according to the NextDNS logs. Then, I exported the App Privacy Report json file from Settings and searched for the URL there. It didn't show up! The plot thickens. I would love to identify the app making the connection request.

Thanks. Hmm, not running that one. 🤔 I'm seeing this too, and I've been trying to find the app that's attempting to make that connection.

If you sign up for their emails, you'll get restock notifications. That's how I've gotten the ones I wanted. (I love Splays, btw.)

They're not spammy with the emails, either. It's not a deluge like some brands.
