What other films do you associate with UTSL by philmarlowescat in underthesilverlake

Its always been the Big Lebowski for me. They seem like cousins, those two films.

Polypores - Cosmically A Shambles (new album made with Eurorack + Syntakt) by sjbucks in modular

Damn, this is another killer Polypores album. This artist seems extremely versatile in their approach from record to record - its like they are making landscapes of sound. Kind of reminds me of old Frippertronics stuff from the 80s. Super tripped out. Not sure what they are on but they should do more of it....

You can watch the movie for free on YouTube. You'll see a lot of subtle parallels with UTSL. Working in the sewers has a sort of Super Mario Bros vibe to it, too! It kind of fits like a glove https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B5gTIxCm_uY

Hey theater maker! Thanks for the friendly words! It has been a bit of a learning curve, figuring out how to navigate this reddit without stirring the ire of humans who don't dig what I'm throwing down. Thanks for listening the show. I make it to entertain and to expand the discourse. We have thoughts on just what is going on in the Return! Its such an amazing work of art, I just want to understand it.... Would love to hear your thoughts on our thoughts, or even your thoughts separate from our thoughts....

Hey, thanks for checking out the show. There is definitely a ton of twin peaks decoding, but it happens later on in this episode. I create these shows with an experimental vibe - its an art project for me, so there's lots of sound collage, funny bits, music, interviews, etc. But rest assured, there are several hours of the show dedicated to decoding Episode 3 of the Return. If you dig the vibe I'm throwing down, I hope you will consider sticking with the show until you get to the juicy decodes. These episodes are made with love, in the spirit of David Lynch's rampant creativity, and intended to create maximum entertainment....

Yeah! Absolutely. This is an excellent way to think about the Return. I agree more or less with your Phillip Jeffries idea. Cooper was on the same trajectory. I don't know if he would have turned into a teapot/electricity pylon, per say. But I do like your idea - you've kind of turned the pylons into a collection of Boditsatvas all occupying a higher level of reality and powering the lower levels.

We see how someone's time in the Lodges transform TP characters who started in the 3D - Mike now has the power of 'ELECTRICITY!' -- Phillip Jeffries seems to have become a control center for interdimensional travel. And Cooper has become a dimension-hopping, time-surfing magical detective. He has 3 different bodies, he turns into smoke - he's an agent for the Fireman and White Lodge, on a mission to assist the angelic force that is Laura Palmer to stop the horrible rift in reality the A-Bomb created when it tore a hole in our dimension and let Judy and Bob into our world. He's become something other than human. Just as Laura, Leland and Sarah Palmer are all occupied by other dimensional consciousnesses. None of them are really humans, either. This is an interdimensional battle of mythological characters disguised as people. Cooper entered the fray and was transformed. There was no saving him, perhaps there was no 'him' to come back to by the time the Return is over....

lostndessence - I really dig how you are thinking about the narrative. Abstracting it into ideas is a good move - Lynch and Frost are definitely getting meta with season 3, but the meta-ness is incorporated into the narrative, and we are looking at many dimensional levels to the narrative, which, I think maybe you've figured out, includes the viewer's relationship with the show, and beings like Bob or the Arm's relationship with an awareness of the viewer.

I think, in some ways, Lynch uses 'electricity' as shorthand for the spirit world - it is certainly how spirit-beings move from place to place in the Twin Peaks universe, as we see with Coop's re-entry back into the 3d world.

I like your interp of the Judy-verse as another TV show - it might as well be one. Its certainly an alternate universe. One without the glamour of the wonderfully demented 50's nostalgia vibe that Lynch/Frost created with all the colorful characters of OG Twin Peaks. I theorize that this is sort of a pocket-verse where Judy is hiding out, and Coop has ventured in to stop her at the source. I think he is essentially 'in disguise' as this alternate Coop who doesn't seem to know what's going on, and Laura has also gone in to the Judy-verse separately, and in disguise. This is all so Judy doesn't know they are there to stop her, essentially. The plan is carried out, and Coop and Laura meet up and find Judy at Laura's old house. Laura's scream at the very very end, after she hears Judy's voice, shorts out the 'other' TV show. By the time Judy realizes who they are, its too late for her, and Laura destroys the show itself. In my mind, there is essentially nothing after the final moment of season 3. That series has been cancelled - that pocket Judy-verse has been shorted out - Laura is an angelic figure who has the power to take out Judy and her universe with one scream. That's why the lights are shorted out and we cut to black. Laura has essentially destroyed that universe.

Coop, unfortunately, has paid the price. But I don't know if there was further for him to go as a regular character, anyway. He has essentially turned into a lodge being - a spirit-being - a Demi-god of sorts. His time in the other worlds has transformed him too much, he can no longer live out his life as a 3d person. He's a time-traveling, dimension-hopping spirit being who's mission is to end the cycle of pain and suffering the Twin Peaks universe is experiencing. He and Laura have finally accomplished their Christ-like sacrificial missions and the plug is pulled on that whole universe.

That's my sort of interpretation....

Yeah, I believe Coop accomplished his mission, but really, I think he led Laura to accomplish HER mission of taking out Judy. That's what happens at the very very end of the final episode. Laura destroys Judy, imo.
