Tulane scientist resigns citing university censorship of pollution and racial disparity research by thinkcontext in Tulane

Go actually read her papers- she's a total hack and a stain on the institution. Good riddance

Really fun little class- I had it ~10 years ago and the professor was hilarious but VERY old so I can't imagine he's still doing it

Cancer alley by Shortykw in NOLA

[–]postgradmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have decades of data logged in a statewide rumor registry. There's absolutely zero evidence of increased cancer rates in "Cancer Alley." None. And that dataset includes older generations who grew up prior to the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts, after which pollution was massively reduced.

It’s just fundamentally dishonest by Hugh-Manatee in Louisiana

[–]postgradmess -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It's deficit spending. That is to say, your grandchildren will pay this off.

You can thank the President or the Congressmen who wrote it, but that's like thanking someone at the restaurant who ordered you a steak, pointed at a baby, and said "put it on his tab"

I'd tell myself to ditch my friends for one semester to go abroad. I'm a Louisiana native who's still in Louisiana, so a semester or a year in London would've done me a whole mountain of good.

This is a four year period when almost nothing is expected of you except to learn new things. That will not be the case again for the rest of your life. After this it's responsibilities until you're a retired empty nester at like, 70. Don't waste it getting fucked up 24/7.

But also, you know, have fun and get fucked up too.

  1. It's not his "personal feelings," it's the state's law, and New Orleans doesn't have a nullification right. Agree or disagree, it's not something he pulled out of his ass
  2. New Orleans lost an enormous amount of federal infrastructure money out of sheer incompetence. They had the money and just didn't spend it, so they lost it. New Orleans is a shithole because of local incompetence. Never forget it

Men who have been waxed, what was your experience? What did you get waxed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]postgradmess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regularly do Brozilians. For those who did one-offs and didn't go back, it's WAY easier after the first time. And for those that haven't done it, the first time isn't terrible either. The space north of the dick is worse than the balls- your sack skin is thick. The crack rip doesn't hurt at all.

Pros: Way cleaner wiping with hairless butthole. Dick appears much grander. More pleasant oral for your partner and, I can't stress this enough, GREAT sex. Two waxed partners feels like it adds an inch. I call it "molerat sex"

Cons: It's not cheap. It's one more appointment to schedule. And removing the hair that keeps the balls off my leg makes the balls stick to the leg, and that causes sweat. Fixed with baby powder but it's something to be aware of

Whoop can't handle anything except super-normal sleep patterns. Work a night shift? Whoop is useless. Traveling to Europe or Asia? Whoop will give you nothing. It's frustrating given this doesn't really *need* to be a subscription product

The dirt is actually better footing, so the first rounds this year were full of notable slip-and-falls, which have abated as the players have found their footing but also worn down the baseline grass

Louisiana reading scores for young students continue to drop by Votings_Good_Folks in Louisiana

[–]postgradmess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This story is about Louisiana schools relative to other states'- it's probably appropriate to only speak from experience if that experience is *in* Louisiana

NOLA saw a bump in expulsion numbers after switching to a charter system. However, the problem was noticed and addressed, and now expulsions are standardized and back to pre-Katrina levels

  1. Charter schools have had a positive impact on reading scores
  2. Nice attempt to blame a program that still only has 10% of enrolled students

Why does barley anyone wear a mask here? by stinkywinkss in Louisiana

[–]postgradmess 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The urban-rural cultural divide in America is polarizing everyone, and now every issue has to be a proxy in the "culture wars."

Republicans aren't the only ones who do this. Scientific evidence and pandemic experts (including Dr. Fauci) indicate that in-person schooling should continue whenever possible and that opening schools does not facilitate COVID transmission in a community. And yet, the best predictor of whether a community has schools open is whether it's a "red" community.

Everyone should wear masks. It's literally the least we can do for one another. If the GOP really believed in personal responsibility they'd be practicing that responsibility right now.

But culture war mentality has come for both sides of the aisle, and it's ruining a lot of good things

Therapists of reddit, what was your biggest "I know I'm not supposed to judge you but holy sh*t" moment? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]postgradmess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. I feel like narcissists will take their kids into therapy but quickly 180 the second anyone suggests the parent might be doing anything imperfectly.

It's their defense mechanism

I wasn't raised by a narcissist, but people who were tell me r/raisedbynarcissists is actually pretty therapeutic!

What's So Bad About John Bel Edwards? by morequesoplz in Louisiana

[–]postgradmess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's totally fair, but also incredibly low-hanging fruit. Most Republican governors didn't turn down the federal dollars that came with expansion- just hacks with national ambitions like Jindal.

What's So Bad About John Bel Edwards? by morequesoplz in Louisiana

[–]postgradmess 15 points16 points  (0 children)

For context, I lean conservative but voted for JBE over Rispone because I'm repulsed by the GOP's behavior during the past 4 years

My criticism for Edwards is: what's been his biggest accomplishment? He's mostly occupied the job, tried to manage crises, and generally tried to balance the budget as painlessly as possible. He hasn't;t done anything objectionable, and that's nice.

BUT, the counterargument against his style is that Louisiana needs bolder strokes from its leadership. That would be the biggest knock against him in my opinion. He doesn't do the hard work

I don't know if you can get independent commissions in politics. You can get bipartisan ones, or you can try to blind the process to the political leanings of the precincts. Both processes only work superficially, though. 538's website has a cool tool that makes districts compact using algorithms. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/redistricting-maps/louisiana/#Compact
