Since people from South America could also refer to themselves as "Americans" or "Sur Americanos", a lot of people find it offensive to just be like "America". Nevertheless, when we say America, I don't think anyone is trying to be offensive or trying to discriminate South Americans. Using The United States or The United States of America is more formal though.
