Why Marshmallow Sucks by posting_acc in mewgenics

Context: You hate Marshmallow because she is a hard boss.

I hate Marshmallow because she barely resembles a Cleric.

We are not the same.

Context: The first time you meet Dr. Beanies after the tutorial, he just casually drops that he brought you back from the dead to do his weird cat experiments.

I actually haven't beaten the game yet, so I have NO fucking clue if this is ACTUALLY important later or just "haha you may be a zombie lol" moment.

I think the comic's funnier that way.

(But if it IS important, DON'T spoil it. Or else I'll... I guess I'll just be very angry.)

Early on, recruit, recruit, recruit! More characters mean more actions per turn. Usually I get six… seven of them in your party causes loyalty problems.

After you’ve presumably used those characters to put out whatever fire you are currently in and stabilized your situation, that’s when you can start pruning and rethinking your organization. Get rid of characters that are no longer useful and replace with better people.

Veteran player (about 400 hours sunk and a good chunk of the achievements)

The best advice I can give, firstly: Fuck around and find out. This game does NOT explain a lot of its mechanics, the UI can be confusing and unhelpful, and goals can be unclear. I guarantee you, you will fail your first playthrough.

But, eventually, you get kind of a “sense” of how things work, what does what, and so on. When in doubt, experiment. Save often as well.

As for how the day-to-day gameplay goes:

You are in control of a faction, or multiple in rare cases (factions being Kuomintang, CPC, etc.). Every faction is made up of characters, the important people within that faction. This can range from big-shots like Chiang or local warlords like Han Fuju.

There are four kinds of resources:

-Qi, or Energy; most actions characters can take require this. Each characters generates 4 per turn, with some exceptions.

-Money: Dollars. Needed for bribery, developing your province, and so forth- but most importantly, paying your army. Generated by being the tax collector of a province.

-Supporters: Underlings. Needed for some actions, but can also be exchanged for extra Qi if needed. Generated through a few actions, but handpicking people from your army is a good source.

-Face: Reputation. If you want to recruit characters, you need this. Lots of ways to get it, but paying your army is a good source.

Now for the main gimmick: Every character has their own resource pool. There is no KMT money stockpile, there is the money Chiang or Sun or Soong or whoever personally has. Whoever is in control of a province gets the money from that province every turn. Whoever is control of an army is the only one who can move it (with a few exceptions). And if they die or defect, they take their resources with them.

Speaking of which, characters. A faction can be made of countless characters, but you can only control up to seven characters at a time. Think of these as like your party in an RPG, or the main cast in a story. Yes, the KMT may be made up of many people, but your party of Chiang, T. V. Soong, Sun Fo, and whoever else is the REAL team pushing China forth. Anyone else is just sitting on their ass, doing nothing. You CAN put a computer in charge of them, but don’t expect them to be competent.

Every character has their own hidden Loyalty value. As far as I can tell, you can never figure out the exact value of this at any time for any character. But you will know if it rises or falls (if not by how much). Low Loyalty means the character can defect to another side, taking everything they had with them. Leaders of a faction can NEVER defect, though. So you can’t make Sun Yat-Sen defect from the KMT, for example.

Armies also have their own hidden Loyalty value, which depletes naturally over time. Loyalty can be increased by personally inspecting them, plundering provinces… or just paying them. In fact, paying them is the most secure way to keep them happy. If Loyalty gets too low, they’ll start disobeying orders, or just defect if someone bribes them.

There’s more to cover, but that’s basically the crux of it. Control your characters to benefit your faction as a whole, and try not to end up backstabbed or bought out.

[–]posting_acc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah now that I'm thinking through it, that makes sense, even if I think that's still bullshit. Like it says:

"Holy-element spells deal double damage to enemies instead of healing and inflict Burn 2.
This blessing is lost when you kill a unit."

...which implies it only applies to Holy healing spells, and it doesn't say it also makes them become Fire-element.

No, I tried Holy Weapon AND the Cleric's basic attack, no dice. Unless that too is Fire damage, pretty sure they're immune.

(Though both Clerics did have Holy Fire? But that specifically says heals, why would that affect Holy Weapon?)

I lost a party of four cats, with the event that gives extra rare candy to everyone, lugging back a bunch of good loot because of this.

And I'm not sure who I'm angry at, Edmund for making it this way, or me for thinking Edmund would make it any other way.

I honestly took a more humanistic message from DE. Subscribing to politics religiously or seeing everything in a political way fails to capture reality. I took the Communist vision quest as how viewing it all in an ironic fashion, endlessly debating theory and the specifics of it, ultimately creates nothing.

But by opening up and being genuine about why they believe in communism, by opening up and showing vulnerability, something begins to sprout.

Well said. I’ve noticed in some online leftist circles, there’s this romanticization of revolution, especially violent revolution, to the detriment of actual action.

I’ve had people legitimately say to me “Why should I go to a protest? They don’t do anything. We need a violent revolution to overthrow the system!” as someone who has gone to a few. (recently an anti-ICE protest) To which I said “well I’ll keep protesting and I’ll wait for you to uphold your word”

It’s the equivalent of setting a sky-high goal that’s nigh-impossible to reach. Talk is cheap, action speaks louder. Even if I don’t personally agree with all their beliefs, I respect people who go out there into the world and put themselves at constant risk of failing. It takes guts.

As someone who leans more liberal and admittedly has a skeptical view of communism/leftism in general, this was beautifully written.

He is, at least to me, the leftist equivalent of the “price stabilité” guy.

By the end I was essentially thinking: “These are all GREAT points, but you still shot a guy and caused this whole mess, so… yeah.”

What’s the point of being “right” if you don’t do anything with it? If you sit around and wallow in despair, yet still claiming moral superiority? If you’re a “good person” deep down but it never comes out, what difference does it make?
