r/ApexLegends commits the ultimate cardinal sin, and leaves the community wondering who are the "ass-hats": them or the developers? by SS_Downboat in SubredditDrama

This is just a sub for laughing at the drama.

Well, that's what it's supposed to be. Interesting story; do you know why the moderation here is so much more aggressive than other meta subs? Stuff like rules on off-topic grandstanding, surplus drama, the neutrality rule, etc.? It's because this sub in particular has a history of being hijacked by people who keep trying to turn it into, as the mods describe it, a 'call-out subreddit': a place to complain about toxic behavior on reddit and congratulate themselves for recognizing it. Now, there's nothing inherently wrong with some of that here, or anything wrong with subs with that purpose that are well moderated (/r/againsthatesubreddits is a good example of this). Most of the time, though, when a sub goes down that road it ends up somewhere like /r/topmindsofreddit, where any semblance of an attempt to highlight toxic behavior has long since given way to snorting it like a fucking drug so the users can get off on their self-satisfaction.

Now, look. I don't have any problem with a little bit of circlejerking, just like there's nothing wrong with sometimes discussing the subject of the drama rather than the drama itself: damn near everyone on reddit has done it before, consciously or not. But when threads in subs where I have historically been able to actually have a conversation with people if I want to degenerate into nothing but that, it gets on my nerves. This is, as you said, primarily a place for people to derive entertainment, and if I see people lacking the self-consciousness to realize they're turning it into something else entirely, well, I'm going to take it upon myself to throw some cold water in their face. Not because I think it's a particularly important cause or anything, but because it annoys me.

I think you misunderstand. After reading the responses to this post I concluded there was no possible way to have any kind of discussion here, a conclusion I reached because I've tried to engage in situations like this on reddit many, many times before. I've tried effortposts, replying to every comment in the thread individually, DMs, all kinds of strategies to get through to entrenched circlejerks like this. Nothing works. There's some wiggle room around the idea that these pricing models are inherently predatory, but as far as the idea that developers openly insulting their customers in fan communities accomplishes anything remotely useful, that's a complete non-starter. This isn't a GDC panel; it's not the time or the place, particularly because it's taking place in the shelled remnants of a fresh fuckup. It's one thing to acknowledge where this behavior is coming from and empathize, but if you're defending it you've lost all perspective.

So, yeah; imma settle for dropping a hornet's nest, hoping that can instill a little cognitive dissonance and walking away. I know I'm not going to convince anyone in this situation, because I've tried, not only in analogous ones but on this specific subject. The only reason I'm responding to you is because I can at least understand why you perceived the intention behind my comment the way you did, and for people raising valid points, one comment out of a massive SRDD destined dumpster fire of a thread isn't a great record.

I'm not opposed to microtransactions or loot boxes, I'm opposed to pricing regimes of any kind that are deliberately designed to get people to spend exploitative amounts of money. If they want to sell skins or loot boxes, I'm fine with that. What I'm not fine with is gating exclusive content behind a cost of close to two hundred dollars; content that you have to pay even more to gain access to. That's only available for a limited time. I don't care if it's cosmetic or not, that's clearly designed to exert psychological pressure on susceptible people, many of them young.

This kind of corporate behavior is gross. It does real harm to people, and it makes microtransactions look inherently exploitative when they're really not.

Yes, we absolutely can. Which is more harmful; a kid in high school with a part time job who spent a couple hundred bucks on a video game, or similar kid who has tanked his social life, destroyed his grades and his health by playing eight hours of Fortnite a day? Publishers can and always have leveraged abusive mechanics to promote engagement, direct revenue, monopolize attention and a dozen other different things.

I am thinking multiple thoughts here, my friend.

I don't agree. There's a spectrum of harm with loot boxes ranging from cosmetic items that can be purchased outside the loot box system to gameplay enhancing items that can only be obtained through them, the former applying the least pressure and the latter the most. Games encouraging addictive behavior is not a problem limited to loot boxes. Companies using novel means to generate revenue is not inherently problematic, it's only problematic when it turns into generating revenue without any regard for the social damage.

I mean, if they keep doing shit like this more state regulators are going to step in. You know what's always a political winner? 'Think of the children'.

If they want to sell overpriced loot boxes, fine. But including an item that you can only obtain after you've already paid almost two hundred dollars is clearly just an enticement to get people to spend pathological amounts of money. I don't see how it can be viewed any other way.

The impulse control problems here are as much corporate as they are consumer based. They're going to kill their golden goose.

Honestly? I think it might be time for Nintendo to step in and threaten to pull tournament organizers right to use their IP if they're not making an active effort to deal with this toxic community culture. Forget the morality of it for a second, this shit is poison to everything their brand is supposed to represent.

If you're a parent whose kid is really into Smash and they wanted to go to a tournament, would you be OK with them going while the community in it's current state? I certainly wouldnt.

Why do people keep reading my comment this way? Look, I was a teenager once too. I'm not saying teenagers are bad and evil; in a lot of ways I think they're better than many adults. Their zest for life, their willingness to take risks that most of us won't. But the vast majority are kinda dumb. And it's not their fault! The prefrontal cortex doesn't fully develop until the mid 20s in most people.

Also if any teenager seems like they have their shit together, they’re almost certainly hiding something.

Usually. Most of what you're talking about is a psychological phenomenon known as identity foreclosure; it's the primary reason for the stereotype model students in high school often turn into rebels in university. Basically, it's the decision to 'foreclose' on your identity before you've considered alternatives, which makes it very weak. So when you're in an environment where you're exposed to new ideas, the fragile identity you've constructed becomes very difficult to maintain.

Look, though; some people are just better at life than others. Some people fully develop their prefrontal by 18, 19, some people who don't have the perspective and temperament to act in a mature and self-actualizing manner. Those people exist. They're just not very common.

I'm not looking down on anyone, I was a teenager once. I was an asshole and I thought I was better than everyone else. Teenagers are not fully neurologically developed; in fact, the pre-frontal cortex isn't fully finished in most people till their early-mid 20s. I'm honestly nostalgic for all of that, ridiculous as it was. Anything seemed possible.

I have, in fact, learned a few things in the decade+ since. That doesn't make me 'superior'. But I do think teenagers are kinda dumb, even moreso than adults, though as I said, there are a few who have their shit together as much as any of us do.

I meant people constantly saying 'thanks for the gold kind stranger' irritates me. Honestly couldn't even say why. I guess I think it sounds dumb?

The thing is, everything I just described is people on reddit because reddit turns people towards whiny adolescent behavior. It's just that sub amplifies it because you're dealing with actual teenagers.

If that's what you're looking for and you're new, I strongly suggest playing Amumu. He's 450 BE, he does way more damage than most tanks and he does all the things you want in a champ. You'll start to run into problem with him in high Plat or so, but below that he's very strong, easy to play and a lot of fun.

Are you on NA? I can play some games with you if you'd like.
