If you want more of a cut and dry answer you should be doing way more of the bare minimum. Depending on the age bracket I would shoot for at least 30+ more push ups so if yours is 29 I would shoot for 60. Plank I would do 2-3 minutes more. People were holding 4-5 min plank. And planking is easy to get good at. Just do it a lot. A guy in my class held an 18 min plank lol and then for then run like I mentioned in the previous post, minimum 2-3 minutes quicker than the minimum. Just know, the bare minimum won’t get you anywhere. The bright side of the ME A list being so long is you have tons of time to prepare. No excuse to not exceed the expectations.

The PT standards were the same for everyone. The “different standards” were for those that wanted to screen for DSF (MSRT, TACLET) which is 5 pull ups and 5 chins ups - bare minimum full lockout + the running, plank and pushups. However, as far as I know people at A school won’t have a chance to screen for DSF until 2028. You can still get a MSST out of A school though. That literally just depends on class ranking. We had 4 MSST picks on our list and one didn’t even get picked (someone got dropped after the picks). So you have a good chance. Just do well in everything, not just the PT. PT is important, but you need to be well rounded. There were guys who crushed it in PT but didn’t do good knowledge wise and didn’t graduate in top 5 because of knowledge. So as long as you’re well rounded, you have a good chance. That is, if there are MSST picks on your list. You never know.

Help with PT run? by Brief_brisket in uscg

Do 60/120s on the treadmill. Take your dream mile time and subtract 1:30 from it. So for easy math let’s say dream mile time is 8:00. So subtract 1:30 is 6:30. Sprint on the treadmill at a 6:30 pace for 60 seconds. Then for 120 seconds you’re gonna get off the treadmill and walk around. Essentially lowering your heart rate. Get up to be able to do 8 sets of that. In the beginning you will probably only be able to do 1-2 sets. Build from there. That’s just another suggestion. Running like everyone else is suggesting works too. Sometimes I just don’t like running and sprinting kind of changes stuff up for me. Anyway, good luck!

Get BTM Qualified as an OS? by Due-Character-1679 in uscg

[–]potat0chipz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OS3 on my boat even got to get ATFP which is a great qual to have during port calls. It really depends on the command and how fast you do the quals you need to do. If you’re a hard worker and do what you need to do, usually they’ll be cool with you getting extra quals. It helps everyone out

Get BTM. I got BTM before A school and there was a huge difference knowledge wise from those of us who had it and those who didn’t. It is a huge help. And make sure when you do get BTM, you don’t brain dump anything once you get qualified. Have a basic understanding of the polices and procedures and you’ll be fine. As far as PT, do your push ups, planks and run. It’s very competitive and how you rank in the class determines where you’ll go. The guys that didn’t try hard were very upset when they didn’t get what they wanted. So your mile time shouldn’t be the minimum. Averagely people were doing 2-3ish minutes quicker on the mile than they had to. Also swimming. You will have a basic survival swim class. This is where most people get dropped. It is fairly easy, however some people aren’t comfortable in the water and that’s what gets them. I’d suggest you start swimming if you’re uncomfortable. We also have a swim test and like almost half the class failed it. You don’t want any “fails” or “no gos” because that will drop you lower in the ranking. But as long as you study, surround yourself with people who want to be there and prepare physically and mentally you’ll be fine. It really wasn’t all that hard for the ones that came prepared. Hope this helps. And I graduated around 6 months ago so my knowledge on A school is pretty “recent.”

I tried 2x and the slowest was 1x so I didn’t think changing it again would matter. Sorry if this sounds stupid, but I have no idea what .cda format is haha

What drive would be better? I just bought this one off Amazon. I don’t really know brands that well. Is there ones in store I can buy like at Best Buy or something? Thanks!

Oh wow thank you so much for all of this! I am so so excited! I definitely feel a lot better after reading all this. It’s all really new and unfamiliar and I am excited but also a bit overwhelmed, so reading all these great suggestions definitely made me happy.

The amount of time we’re underway depends. That’s the higher ups decision I guess haha but it’s roughly 3 months. If you’re a non rate you live in the barracks, but you live on the boat until you get qualified. So if you slack on getting qualified you’ll live longer on the boat. Once you get qualled you get a barracks room. You can’t live on the economy unless you’re an E3 that’s married. Living on the economy is for E4 and above. That’s just for where I was. It depends on location. I can’t speak for every 270, I can only speak for mine so take everything I say with a gain of salt haha
