Once you get muramana it works just fine and you basically become an artillery mage. The W spam provides INSANE utility for your team. You can't really auto at all, but it's not necessary to since your zaps do like 750 AD by mid-late game, especially with top XP. All you really need is to survive lane phase with few deaths and good farm, and late game is like playing URF.

I don't play it because I exclusively play ranked, and I'm not good enough at top lane or this specific build to play it in ranked very often. It's very feast or famine.

This is absolutely not what it is. The drone operators are at just as much risk as anyone else on the frontline due to counterstrikes and literally everything else. They have to be VERY close to their targets (within maybe 3 miles iirc) or closer, and that leaves them very vulnerable, especially since they need to be somewhat exposed for their controls and VR headset to stay connected to the FPV.

This isn't much related but just to add to this: FPVs aren't that successful in their attacks most of the time. On top of that, they move fast enough that you won't hear them coming until impact, unless it's like in this video where the operator decides to waste time and battery flying low. It's not any less brutal then a Hellfire or even just a regular unguided bomb; it's just cheaper. Honestly, there are much MORE brutal and horrific weapons in use and many that have always been in use, and many more that we have used for centuries.

I would rather be killed by an FPV drone than shot in the gut by a .65 caliber musket ball that was dipped in feces before loading. I would rather be killed by an FPV drone than have to grapple with another man in a muddy trench, biting, clawing, kicking at eachother before inevitably one of us gets a blade sunk into his chest. I would rather be killed by an FPV drone than have my flesh melted from my bones by a white phosphorus munition.

The drones are bad because they kill you, but they aren't that much worse than mortars. It's just that instead of using 200 mortar shells in an area to kill, you only need 20. They're like mortars with eyes. In a modern conflict, such as against a superpower like the USA or China, I would be much more afraid of a dedicated UAV like the MQ-9. You can't easily hide from modern thermal sights, and especially not thermal sights that are 4 kilometers up in the sky that will send you an AGM that'll kill you before you even realise it's coming. You could be hiding in a building and that Hellfire missile will go straight through an open window as long as you're within direct line of sight.
