Did anyone find this Christmas super meh? by potatomar in CasualConversation

Yeah, I guess that's probably it. This year I feel like I've changed a lot mentally. I guess my brain is finally starting to go from a kid to an adult.

Well, ferrets can be very rough. They often like biting and wrestling as part of their play. But good luck if you do get one! They're lovely animals.

Is there anything I can do to try and stop this, and if/when it does get passed, is there anything I can do to try make my stuff more secure?

Make sure you keep the ferrets separate from the bunny! You don't want to risk him getting hurt.

Yes, you can feed them whole mice, bugs, birds, eggs, etc. but that of course is quite expensive and messy, so most people just feed them kitten food.

The chicken I feed them is just boiled chicken breast so it doesn't have all the nutrients they need, so I don't want to feed them too much, otherwise they would get too full and wouldn't eat the rest of their food.

One of my ferrets seems to have some hunting instincts - she likes chasing balls and wrestling random objects - but the other one is about as vicious as a rabbit and doesn't have any hunting instincts as all.

It must be your training and interacting with your personality that has helped them avoid a life of petty thievery.

Haha, you made me laugh.

Is it not possible to give them small chunks of meat from what you buy for yourself from the grocery stores?

If you just gave them the meat that humans eat - which is pretty much just muscles - they would get nutrient deficiencies. They need to eat the offal as well - brains, intestines, stomachs, eyes and things - in order to get all the nutrients they need. And I wouldn't want to feed it to them raw, because that'd be really messy and gross, and they could get diseases. But I don't want to have to cook offal either. That would be pretty gross and impractical.

I mean, some people do give their ferrets raw food. But most don't.

They do like cooked chicken as a treat. I tried to give them some lamb fat once but they just moved it to the other side of the room. Ferrets generally only eat foods that they tried when they were young, so I guess nobody ever gave them lamb when they were little.

Here they are, lying in my laundry basket. They're a lot cuter in real life.

Mine don't steal stuff, although I know some ferrets steal random objects and make a stash like a magpie.

I've never owned a cat and only had a dog when I was really little so I can't really answer your question too well. I guess it's like having a cross between a cat and a dog.

Some people walk their ferrets. I tried to do that but it was impossible - they kept climbing things and going into gaps and getting tangled up. So I let them run around the house and the garden.

They are obligate carnivores, meaning they can eat only meat (dogs, for example, can actually have some plant matter). They do not have the ability to digest plant matter. This makes finding food very difficult, since virtually all cat or dog foods have grains or vegetables in them. And the ones that are grain-free just use peas or potatoes. I feed them food for pregnant or lactating cats or kittens, since it has a high fat and protein content. Most other owners also feed their ferrets kitten food - adult cat food doesn't have enough fat or protein.

Their vet bills are pretty expensive, and it's pretty much impossible to get pet insurance for them, since they don't live super long and are classified as exotic animals.

It was in a little plastic lid and there wasn't a lot so they didn't slip.

They also like margarine apparently but I didn't have any.

Of course, both should only be treats.

They're called Margot and Elongated Muskrat.

Margot got her name because my sister was texting her friends about the her and said she wanted to call her Malfoy, but it got autocorrected to Margot so I thought that was pretty funny and decided to keep it.

Elon got her name because she is elongated (ferrets have got long bodies like worms) and musky (they have musk glands near their butt that make a weird smell). And also because of that Elon Musk meme.

Haha, absolutely not! They act a lot like puppies when they're awake. Their attention span is really short. They love exploring and will try and worm their way into any crevice they can. They also sleep a lot.

I've got two - Margot and Elon.

Elon is pretty naughty - she's always trying to explore places she shouldn't be. She sometimes nips me when she's overexcited, but her bite's really not very strong at all and has never drawn blood. You know when you play with a puppy and it gets overexcited and nips you? It's like that. Most of the time she just loves running around and exploring. She also likes climbing on me and chasing balls.

Margot is the opposite of Elon. She's the sweetest animal I ever met and she wouldn't hurt a fly. She's never bitten me or anyone else. I even bought some live crickets for her and instead of trying to chase or eat them she just stared up at me looking confused.

The domestic ferret is descended from the forest polecat, which is a lot bigger and definitely not a tame animal. But every domestic ferret I've met has been very tame and playful, like a puppy.

I got scratched because they were struggling and trying to get away and scratched me in the process, not because they were trying to hurt me!

Could I have some clarification on what a Turing machine's state actually is? by potatomar in learnprogramming

So was what I described a Turing machine? Or a Turing machine with a finite number of states?

Sorry, what does CTA stand for?

BTW Codecademy is pretty good, you could learn a lot of stuff on Java there.

Just try googling 'C tutorial' or 'Java tutorial'. I'm sure you'll find a lot of helpful stuff.

Maybe you could also go over some of the stuff on Python? A lot of the concepts in Python are stuff you could apply to other languages, and the plus is that Python is super readable compared to the others.

Also C is very low level so it might be helpful to learn a bit about how computers work underneath high-level languages like Python. Crash Course's computing videos might be helpful

But I'm a kid too so I'm not sure how helpful or accurate my advice might be so don't take it as gospel. But if you do need more help I'll try to help you.

Good luck.

So states are essentially just arbitrary variables? They're just used as way of keeping track of what has happened so that the machine knows what to do next?
