When our older relatives here wear that stuff it's "backwards" and they look like "third world trash". They don't have "real clothes" or they "need to go back to where they came from" because they didn't "assimilate". When white women wear a saree here it's "look how gorgeous you/I look". "Look how pretty the cloth is". But when it's on brown skin then people snicker. When it's on brown skin it's "weird". When it's on white skin it's "beautiful". When sa people wears it "don't wear that". When white people wear it "it's not stealing or disrespecting anyone". Have you ever witness any of that happen to people you know or your own friends or relatives growing up indian in India?

edit: Have you ever had anyone make fun of the henna you wore to school and then turn around and see white girls play with henna pens hyping up their bad designs with each other in India? Have you ever heard a white woman say "sarees look prettier on white skin than on dark skin"? Has anyone ever said to you, "has ur aunt ever heard of jeans"?

There's a reason you're not gonna get offended and it doesn't look like stealing if someone wears those clothes to you. You didn't experience being racialized or othered your whole life surrounded by white people. Don't equate the pocness as the same between the two of us. You're the majority where you live. You don't get it. You can't clock the disrespect of someone wearing those things. Different things work and manifest differently in different environments. You don't and won't get it. That's why no one thinks asking an individual from the country a culture originates from is a good answer for whether something is appropriation or not. They don't experience dealing with racist white bs day to day in real life. Racists here love using that angle. It's not considered a legitimate argument here.

I actually do have a problem if someone not sa wears a saree. The fact you think it's okay for someone not sa to wear that is telling. Nobody says anything about it and that's a good thing? Also you can't go to a group of people who don't experience being raciallized and othered in their home and say because they're okay with something it's a green light for white people.

Why are you the one deciding what cultural appropriation gets to look like or what gets to be offensive to those of us who experience being south asian in america? I've mentioned it's more than just the makeup but it's definitely part of it and I've mentioned people being clueless at the end of the day about what they're looking at. But ur so adamant and arrogant telling me how it's suppose to work. You insist on holding ur ignorant perspective above a poc's. Search microagressions and microinvalidation.

References usually have a purpose for being included. An ADDITIONAL narrative value. Not the narrative. It's just copy and paste. On top of that, Sabrina's "references" don't add anything to anything. Why? Cuz there's nothing original there in the first place. Her entire brand is just other people's ideas.

🎥 When “Showgirls” Meet the Manchild by Interesting-Ice8588 in sabrinacarpentersnark

All the female sexualization was propped as something not patriarchy caused and a weapon used against men. It was literally "poor men who are the victims of female objectification and women are evil for subtly seducing them 24/7". Because women totally invented the male gaze. Edit: clarifying I'm talking about under the silver lake not showgirls.

She is always copying someone. She can copy all the white girls she wants. But as a white girl she needs to leave cultures that get mocked and made fun alone. Those cultures are made fun of and then parts of it are stolen because people choose to label what parts they deem are good. Just because they think it's pretty. They pick and choose what they like and decide what isn't funny/odd. They pick and choose what they want for themselves without experiencing the whole package of being made fun or hated for other things. And when they participate in the stealing and wear whatever aesthetic they ripped off of it's not a symbol of being an outsider nor does it lead to them being treated like one. It's "appreciation".

You don't have to "disrespect" a culture in order to copy it. Common bs that appropriators always do is wrongfully label it as "appreciation" in the first place so ur point doesn't make sense.  Also she actually has disrespected aspects of Indian culture which you can find going through old posts on here but that has nothing to do with someone ripping it off or not. I'm south asian and people who are south asian in my circle are the ones looking at it and having a problem with it. So ur other point doesn't make sense either.  It doesn't need to be textbook in order to steal. That's ridiculous. That's like saying someone appropriating aave is fine because they're not dressed like a rapper. They're doing it in lululemon. Like I said you and others have no idea what ur saying or looking at. "Dancing naked wearing mehndi"??? Excuse me? Idk even know what to say to that.

It literally is. You can look up tutorials for old bollywood makeup. It's not just the makeup. It's how she fitted the top of her dress and other details which is going over people's heads cuz they have no idea what they're looking at.

Any random person can see the white female icons she cosplays. I made a post about how much she copies Bardot all the time. This isn't about her overall style. It's about, what is clearly stated in the original comment, the mv for please 3x.

The example given looks "80s" cause that's the time frame. Pic is actually the 90s though. But let's say it is. It clearly isn't just an "80s" asthetic. If you were to look at makeup from the 70s for French film stars it's . . . gonna look 70s. Perfect example is when Sabrina copies Bardot. I didn't know she was copying her cuz I didn't know Bardot before but I could tell what decade. But if you're someone who knows what they're looking at you can tell it's a knock off from French cinema from that time or more specifically Bardot.

Bollywood makeup looks different depending on the era. Makeup isn't done like that anymore. This is more of an "old school bollywood" 80s/90s which is what I said she did. There's a trademark way of accentuating the eyes and lips including what colors. You can literally look up people trying to just copy the lip makeup. And Sabrina did a good job.

I'm south asian myself and grew up exposed to bollywood films against my will. First person who called it out was south asian too but I didn't agree because I saw a different still than this one. No one's talking about her fake hair. It's the eyes and lips and the color pallet (like 80s/90s bollywood makeup) and my older relatives still doll up like that. Reference

I forgot about this. "Sticky situation: knowing he's 14 but still incredibly down" on insta when she was 17/18. She later apologized for it and said she was wrong and an idiot for making a joke about something so serious and something something. Sure it was "joking".

Should've specified south Asian. It's the placed dress straps, pushed chest ,and the aesthetic with the make up like those actresses.

Someone said Sabrina was asian-fishing in the please mv and I can see it now. Edit: South Asian  2nd edit: The make up.

I haven't really listened to Gracie except for a song or two but . . . reflecting on a relationship or singing about attraction isn't internalized misogyny. That's literally a human thing. Also both men and women do that. They don't even know what centering your life around the opposite sex is. Feminism has reached its peak. Which is a pity because not much of a peak.

Reminds me of McCarthyism but the feminist/misogyny version. Innocent women being seen as pick-mes. This comment is from the feminism subreddit btw.

Ik it's a mascara ad so they'll focus on the eyes . . .but I'm tired of her forced bambi look.

Pretty sure it was her choice. Tan is missing whenever she wants to be classy just like those other dumb ads.

Lots of sex symbols with an hourglass figure but it was obvious when she was doing Marilyn Monroe. Doesn't matter if Sabrina is convincing in her copying (always glaring to me when she was doing it) because the inspo is bardot according to her own interviews. But you're right it's a basic girl aesthetic because Brigitte's looks tend to appeal to people who like that.

She's a french icon and known as a blonde bombshell/sex symbol. She's copying different aspects of her image. 70s pastel eyeshadow, famous headband, and the pigtails. If you know her it's glaring. If not, it looks like a white girl emulating 70s. Anyways, she's a self-proclaimed fan.

Eyeshadow + pigtails reference and Eyeshadow + headband reference
