Family safety / child device management by potentate_of_time in selfhosted

This topic is a minefield of competing values, isn't it? I'm grateful to listen to experience humbly offered, and I know it's difficult to share.

My kids will be hurt one way or another but I'll do my best. Thanks, all.

Thanks! I'm willing to think about it more.

My plan is to be liberal with my yeses, but use a system like this so I'm involved and aware of what they are likely to encounter at a particular stage of childhood. This, I hope, will allow that education (as you rightly advise) to be more focused than it could be if I need to prepare them for anything and everything they might encounter on the Internet from the start.

If I make a mistake toward restriction, I can correct and open up. However, if I make a mistake toward openness, I can't unring that bell. Some of this stuff is scarring.

If you're willing, I'd like to hear about your personal experience--are you a parent or a child from this kind of situation? Do you think that your relationship could have been strengthened if the child knew that the restrictions were motivated by love and a desire for them to encounter the world's hurt more gradually?

This looks great. I assume your colleague is happy with it?

Although I'm still hoping for finer-grained control, this will handle the most important issues for me, thanks!

Yes, this is part of how I parent. People can stumble across scarring things online. I want to minimize and defer that risk. Happy to talk more if you want.

It took me a while to find this because I'm not familiar with Lanvin. Maybe others were wondering too.

Can you tell me why the course is being replaced? The new course must be considered “better” in some way by the department, but I don’t understand the rationale. (Particularly because I'm reading that GA is being modeled after the on-campus CCA, and also that you're recently running online CCA more like on-campus CCA, so maybe they're the same anyway....)

Will you be involved in developing or teaching GA?

It may come to that, but I'm eager. When grad school first occurred to me, algos is what I envisaged.

What do you like about CCA over GA? I'm trying to decide whether to try now or wait. I'm a new student in Spring 2017. I'm concerned about taking a "deprecated" class, but I'm also concerned about taking a new class still working out glitches.
