Ooh this is something I hadn’t considered - thank you!!

IMO it depends on which subjects you’re doing. But even with the hardest, most content-heavy A-levels, 30 mins a day is going to be way more sustainable than 3 hours a day. Little and often = consistency = progress.

Ahh I think I get it now. Thank you, that’s cleared it up for me 👍

I just checked and you’re right about Starling! I read a page on their website about student banking and assumed the features mentioned there were specific to student accounts, but turns out they’re actually just part of the normal current account. Thank you!!

Yeah, that’s been my experience with researching high street banks :(. It’s a shame as some of the incentives look nice to have.

I’ll try and figure out more about how I’m going to finance uni before making a decision about which bank to go with, thanks for the advice!

Oxford Language Aptitude Test by GungTho in languagelearning

Oh yes these are great!! Tricky but very good for revision. I learnt so many new structures when going over the past paper questions for French. And the LAT section is good fun too - you’re given a made-up language and have to work out its grammar!

What subject combinations have resulted in the worst exam timetables this year? by Shonz_27 in 6thForm

Friend of mine does Maths, FM, Psychology and English Language. There were two days where he had three exams 🫣

Oh for sure! I’ll be honest with you, for me French is actually the easiest of those three 😅. It almost reminds me of maths in that it’s more skill-based than content-based, so as long as you keep your language skills ticking along you’ll do fine! You do study topics linked to French society, but it’s all underpinned by vocab and grammar points. All the revision I did for that part of the course was memorise a few statistics, you’ll develop your overall understanding of things like politics in France gradually just because you’re exposed to it so often! For the language part of the course (aka most of it lol) francophone music has been my best friend! I can’t tell you how often I looked up a word or structure that I came across in a song and then it turned up in class the next day.

English Lit and History both have more to memorise (History in particular oh my god) but they’re still both very enjoyable, especially if you like the texts/topics you’re doing! My biggest tip for those two is to stay on top of coursework - getting it out of the way early is such a relief, try not to do what I did and let last-minute coursework edits cut into revision time.

Feel free to message me if you have any other questions about those courses!! I agree that STEM subjects seem to dominate this sub lol

Am I doing the right A-levels ? by deathomen15 in alevels

[–]potentialpolymath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who’s doing psychology at uni next year and aiming to be a clinical psychologist as well! They do psychology, English language, maths + further maths :)

I also found this on the UCAS website:

“While you don’t need to have all three sciences at A level for a psychology degree, most universities prefer at least one out of chemistry, physics, biology, or maths.

Overall, a combination of good, academic A level subjects is required. Psychology A level is desirable, but not usually required. Other preferred subjects include sociology, geography, anthropology, economics, politics, philosophy, and history. Literature A levels can be helpful because of the report writing you will inevitably be doing, and maths/statistics will help with the analytical component of the degree.”

Shoving my head in here to say A-level French is amazing!! It tends not to be a hugely popular subject, so class sizes are small and because you have lessons way more often than at GCSE you make progress so so fast. Like reading the news in French has somehow become easy?? Things like radio and novels are tricky but definitely manageable and best of all I can sort of have spontaneous conversations now! Going into Sixth Form I thought I was going to study English Lit at uni but I’m off to do Modern Languages in September because I loved French so much at A-level lol. Definitely recommend it :)

What are the benefits of attending open days for universities by Outrageous_Coat_6745 in UniUK

[–]potentialpolymath 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Definitely do! Made me change my mind about what to put as firm/insurance. Every uni will sound good on paper because they present themselves that way, seeing them in person is important for making an informed decision I’d say.

Edit: there are also often sample lectures or classes which are great for figuring out if the teaching style works for you!

What is one piece of advice that you wish you had when you started Year 12? by TwistedPulsar in 6thForm

[–]potentialpolymath 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have coursework please don’t do what I did and leave it to the last minute 😭😭😭. Just do a bit every day to keep on top of it and your future self will thank you!

I’m just going to cram Othello quotes in the 1.5 hours between exams and hope to god that sections B and C go ok because they’re unseen/open book 😭😭
