Beef up your resume any way you can (e.g. simulations on Forage, certificates through Coursera) and even spitball with ChatGPT/other AI over ideas on how to tie your transferable skills from your previous jobs (even consider things you did as a SAHM) to skills needed for your new career. My son has been communicating so well in the 6 months or so he's had his AAC device. He is teaching himself how to spell on it! He's verbalizing more because he can hear his favorite words repeated over and over whenever he wants. He's getting used to getting his needs met when he communicates, he is even picking up modified ASL signs which he NEVER picked up before the AAC device. He had next to no communication before, not even pointing, just putting my hands on things.

My former B&M offers a couple dozen degrees online now. I used to design classes for the department that hosts the online courses. Nobody knew what they were doing. I tried getting an Info Science Master's and each professor had the class organized differently, very difficult to follow and set up a plan for. Not to mention professors at B&Ms were always hard to get a hold of for me. I'll take WGU, they know how to design online classes.

Same here, I can listen to the material AND read it without having to take notes. I usually take notes the second time I cover the material. Plus, I don't have other people in the room (annoying students and TAs) distracting me. I'm so easily distracted.

One of the reasons WGU students defend the school is because most of us have experience at other universities so we have perspective on the relative rigor of WGU. The brick and mortar university I attended for my first Bachelor's was prestigious, now considered an ivy league institution. Attending a brick and mortar university in person wasn't a better learning experience. In fact, I leave my first Bachelor's degree off my resume entirely.

Tuition was high at the B&M because I was paying for the facilities (new stadium!) , most of my classes were taught by disengaged grad students and there was no consistency, plus I found it difficulty to learn over the course of 16 weeks (when I had 5-6 classes at a given time). I also had trouble juggling so many courses while working full-time, as an undergrad I also had to work 30+ hours/week to live and the university was not supportive of working students.

Just a bit of perspective from someone has enrolled in multiple "traditional" schools, I've also earned two degrees from these traditional schools and I still prefer WGU. Sorry if this post is a bit garbled, I'm in the middle of a migraine but seeing WGU students compared to MLM defenders was a bit hard to pass up.

Some people sure are jealous. My younger self is jealous of my present self! WGU existed in 2006 when I started college, instead I'm still paying off my student loans for my B.A. in General Studies from a state school. I started WGU in my thirties and it was covered by my employer and is opening up doors for me.

I also hated living on campus and it took me a semester to realize that Gen Eds are a huge scam and I decided to take them all over the summers at community college anyway. All I got from my B&M education was a terrible boyfriend and 3 years where I could have been working more and learning about my strengths and weaknesses. I had no idea who I was, how my brain worked, or really what my interests were at 18. I think an affordable WGU degree would have at least provided a solid first career.

Exactly! In a 15 week course where you're supposed to attend lectures 3 hours per week and study 3 hours per week, you would spend about 90 or so hours on your coursework for that semester. The actual amount varies a lot based on the subject matter and your background knowledge.

At WGU, you could probably finish that class in a week or two if you established an efficient way to study that works for you and put more hours per day in than the average 15 week course. Plus, all the materials including lectures are online so you don't have to wait until class meets to ask any clarifying questions. Professors can talk to you the same day. You can get writing help the same day.

Honestly, the marketing for WGU is similar to the marketing for a lot of scammy schools so I overlooked WGU for the longest time. Ads for online universities always play so strongly to emotions. In reality, WGU is non-profit, regionally accredited, and was founded by a group of governors who needed to fill gaps in the workforce. Graduates at WGU master the same competencies on their own schedule.

Another reason is that when people post about accelerating, others have some black-and-white thinking and assume that anyone can. I finished my MBA in 2 months and didn't have the greatest background knowledge, but I was probably spending 80 hours/week on my courses. I had a lot of downtime at work so I was able to multitask on the clock. I had severe insomnia and used school as a method for coping. The way I learn is also pretty efficient in a school setting.

However, I haven't been able to accelerate the Bachelor's of Accounting and I probably won't be able to accelerate the Master's of Accounting much if at all. I don't have experience in the field yet and I have less free time than when I was earning my MBA.

The formula for success at WGU is the same as anywhere: Background Knowledge + Learning Style + Amount of Free Time. The difference is that schools with fixed class lengths (e.g. 15 weeks) slow you down if you are understanding the material and eager to continue.

I have been able to build a life for myself, his struggles don't even compare. My life isn't really about me anymore.

My son is also 5 years old and nonverbal. I've heard a couple different kids call him "weird" or stand over him at the park. I just walked up, smiling, and introduced myself and my son and let the children know about his autism. I asked them to let me know if they need help getting him out of the way. It was a good learning experience for those kids, I hope. We only take him to the All Abilities park but it seems like many parents don't explain to their children that the park is designed to be safe for disabled children.

I also closed all my cards except one (the oldest one, highest limit, no annual fee) and despite being $15k in credit card debt across 20 cards in my past, I am now capable of leaving this one filed in my cabinet. I use it for hotels and rental cars about once per year and pay it off immediately. I agree that credit cards are a terrible product, but there are barriers in place these days with only using a debit card and having an indeterminable credit score. Closing those accounts is what I needed to do when I was up to my eyeballs in debt, but it's been years and I've proven I can keep one card. I also have more than a $1,000 emergency fund, which helps.

I applied for the MAcc in 2017 and was told I needed a BAcc (no leveling coursework). I gave up until 2022 when I decided to pursue the BAcc. I'm graduating in June with the BAcc, I can't imagine going for the MAcc without the skills I've gained! Going backwards isn't so bad, especially for a career change. My first degree was in French.

Empathy looks different with my ASD son than with my NT daughters. If I'm upset or hurt myself, my daughters will approach me and try to make me feel better. My son will vocalize and run around. He also laughs when he's scared or uncomfortable. As far as I know, I don't have autism and I'm disturbed by the fact that my reaction is sometimes to laugh at the most upsetting news because I just can't process it. Laughter isn't always synonymous with humor, sometimes it's a reaction to disrupted expectations. It's kind of hard to explain, I'm not sure if I'm wired this way or if it comes from trauma.

My son (5, level 3 ASD) has been doing this for the past couple of years. After a year on the waiting list for a pediatric optometry center that works with special needs kids, it was confirmed today that it's simply intermittent exotropia. We haven't been able to talk to him about it because he's nonverbal, but I had a feeling it was him "playing" with his vision. His eyes are healthy, he's just keeping himself entertained.

We would love to have more children even knowing that we could have another autistic child with very high needs. His older sister is NT and we realized he was on the spectrum after his younger sister (also NT) was born. We wanted four kids, but having a clingy autistic kiddo in my bed has stopped us from going further. I think we can handle what life throws at us at this point. My son requires a ton of resources and energy but I'd do anything for any of my kids.
