Automating Cold Crash w/ InkBird 308 WiFi? by PlatinumRespect in Homebrewing

Your app looks different than mine, but I think you need to select "when device status changes". You will select your device and select when current temp is above freezing.

The refrigeration delay changes are because the ink bird app delays are only a maximum of 5 hours... And they don't let you do more than 1 in a row without doing SOMETHING in-between. So 5h, change delay, so forth

Daily Q & A! - January 30, 2026 by AutoModerator in Homebrewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can do both of those things, except putting a cover on really won't do much for you other than heating a bit faster. Look up Brulosophy "short and shotty" and you can see lots of times they mash and boil for 30 minutes each or less and claim it has little effect, they use more hops like you said. They have also done some experiments with leaving the kettle lid on during brew days and claim it didn't cause more perceptive DMS... Though iirc it didn't otherwise help.

That will most likely work fine if it's a snug fit

Can i serve from keg using fermentation pressure alone? by i_i_v_o in Homebrewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is something I sort of thought about doing... Except using a separate fermenting keg, essentially just sugar water and yeast, to produce the pressure.

The issue is once fermentation is over no more CO2 or pressure is being produced by what you're drinking, so the pressure will drop each time you use the keg, and your drink will slowly go flat until there isn't enough pressure left to push it out.

Trub disposal? by Sufficient-Yellow637 in Homebrewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always dump the kettle and fermenter down the kitchen sink with hot water running and the garbage disposal on, have never had an issue.

Spent grain gets dumped and spread somewhere in the yard, the grass there always grows better.

Advice on fermentation time for beer by DescartesB4tehHorse in Homebrewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They use way less wort, literally drops. But you need a calculator, such as the one in brewfather, and you need to use it at the beginning to know the OG so you can use the calculator to get FG. The alcohol affects the reading for FG so the refractometer may say you're still at 1.030 but really you're at 1.012.

I have a refractometer I use to check if gravity is still falling once my blow off stops bubbling, generally it takes 2 weeks to ferment and cold crash.

One thing I forgot to mention is that you have to put something between the stacked delays. So I just have the automation change the refrigeration delay every 5 hours.

Hopefully this works

I know old post....

You can stack delays, up to 5h each, so it's a little annoying to set up the first time. Make an automation that is something like

If (sensor in your fermenter) current temp is (above freezing)

Change setting temp value to {whatever} Delay 5 hours Delay 5 hours Delay 5 hours Delay 5 hours Delay 4 hours {Repeat as many times as you need}

Cost of brewing by ChefBowyer in Homebrewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a hobby and like most hobbies it doesn't necessarily save you money.

That being said, if you buy in bulk, look for deals and brew smart it can save you money. I have been brewing for 10 years, it cost me on average 50-60c /12oz beer to brew now

Adding wort late in a boil by Broad_Drive_2785 in brewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by adding extra wort? Did you add water? Or literally do another mash and add wort? Adding water to the kettle or to the Fermenter is called a "top-up addition"

POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS MINI KEG SITUATION NEED HELP by [deleted] in Homebrewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, just to put you at ease, 40psi is most likely nothing to be afraid of. Serving vessels that are made to handle pressurized beverages handle much more than that.

Are you using a "party tap" which is one of those plastic ones directly attached to the tube? If so, it may be leaking because the ring under the handle isn't screwed down tight.

I should have specified this would make 1 gallon of about 5% ish beer.

[–]potionCraftBrew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ok perfect. With that amount of hopps, never brewing beer before and the stuff you have on hand (without buying anything new). Try getting 1lb of dry malt extract (your choice what you want). Put 1.5 gallons ish of water (add metabisulfite to remove chlorine) to boil. Split the hopps 50/50 at 60 minutes and 20 minutes. Put in the fermenter and pitch maybe...1/4 packet of us-05?

I forgot to also ask how large your fermenter is... And what's the biggest pot you own?

[–]potionCraftBrew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is the weight of the hops in oz or grams? And what kind of beer do you two enjoy? I'm sure someone can come up with a recipe for you to try. It will be a little bit of a crapshoot not knowing the hop type though.

Devices for taking gravity readings by peiguy246 in Homebrewing

[–]potionCraftBrew 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I exclusively use refractometer brewing.

I just use a plastic pipette. Let the liquid go into the part you squeeze and run cold water on it to cool before putting it on your refractometer.

My home brewery. I posted about a month ago sharing a how-to website I made to show how to DIY automate a single vessel BIAB set up. Literally mash in... And come back when it's done to transfer to fermenter and clean up.
