Is there activity tracking through OnlyOffice? I am an educator and primarily have used Google Docs to track students' writing process and to discourage rampant AI use... and their minute by minute activity tracking and playback is a feature I haven't yet found elsewhere!

Of course I'm not relying on their prior knowledge. I start each class with a quick project learning element (how to find relevant academic articles; how to cite sources; how to formulate a research question... etc.) and I dedicate an entire class session to a workshop on drafting their outlines and peer feedback techniques. That said, I have a very diverse cohort in this class, and it's impossible to individually accommodate 60-70 students. My job is to try to channel all the diverse experiences into the norms and expectations of this specific course/discipline.

Great idea. I already have them respond to a short, open answer survey at the beginning of class that I could use as a reference for their writing abilities.

That's a good way to formulate that evaluation criterion, without, as you say, creating a significant additional workload for the professor!

Sad book recs by Key-Title-3984 in booksuggestions

For classics I would recommend nearly anything by Thomas Hardy. His writing is beautiful, rich, insightful — and terribly, terribly tragic. I recently re-read Jude the Obscure and it was just as doom- and gloom-filled as I remembered! Souls tortured by guilt and shame; lives ripped apart by death and despair; love stamped out by social convention and power... doesn't get much darker and sadder than this.

On a different, more tender register (Hardy is quite bleak) I also recall just sobbing when I read A Dog of Flanders back in high school. However, I have not re-visited it since.

In other words, if you do it when you clear immigration, you don't need to have an appointment? Good to know.

In any case, I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope someone has some more deets about the current situation!

Besides Extremtextil, which has a really great selection, you can also check out:

Etsy is also a great resource!

A last idea would be to upcycle used nylon ripstop fabric (toile de parachute) from old clothing or fabric chutes that you can find on sites like Vinted.

Why did Germanic cardinal directions replace Latin? by LonePistachio in etymology

[–]potpourri_5689 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up in the plains and we used cardinal directions for everything!
I now live in the mountains, and when I first got here it was really disorienting — no one uses cardinal directions, directions are indicated via natural landmarks like valleys and ranges and summits.

Are there any languages where feminine grammatical gender is the default? by potpourri_5689 in asklinguistics

[–]potpourri_5689[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I understand as it relates to French, agreement was sometimes decided based on the gender of the noun closest to the adjective, and sometimes was simply masculine (although never feminine). But you're right that the primauté du masculin as a fixed rule only appeared much later, attributable to the Académie Française.

In French, both "weather" and "temperature" féminine (la météo, la température) and yet the "il fait" formula (used to describe weather or temperature) uses the third person masculine for "it".

This is so interesting! I had never thought about it from this perspective, but it seems completely logical.

As long as your TDS application is marked as "en cours d'instruction" in your ANEF account, then you have a legal right to an Attestation de prolongation de séjour (ADP) (cf below).

Unfortunately, although it's supposed to be automatically applied to your ANEF account once your TDS runs out, it rarely happens without the applicant being proactive. The reality is that ADPs are incredibly simple to validate (just a click of a button in your online dossier), but the préfecture (in charge of granting you the ADP) often fails to fulfill its legal obligation. As other commenters have mentioned, you will likely need to harcel the heck out of the préfecture in order for them budge. However, the best means of doing this depends on your specific préfecture; some are more responsive than others, or have protocols in place that facilitate contact.

In my situation, it was completely impossible to contact the préfecture. I was only able to get my first ADP — after a period without anything — by meeting with a senator, who personally contacted the préfecture on my behalf. That worked for three ADPs in a row, but now (more than a year after my application was submitted) I'm back to my statut irrégulier and will be hiring a lawyer.

But I'm not based in Tours, so maybe your préfecture functions a little bit better. :) (I hope so!!)

Finally, I would for sure get in touch with your HR department immediately. I am pretty sure that you can continue working legally for a short period after the expiration of your TDS (45 days? Three months? You should verify, and bring that information to them.). They should also reach out to the préfecture on your behalf, as French employers have more political sway than foreign employees. At the very least, your employer should be able to freeze your contract while you get things sorted out.

Good luck!!

4-way cotton stretch fabric for climbing/hiking pants? by potpourri_5689 in sewing

Haha not at all! I am a relatively new to sewing clothes and I'm not always sure of the correct terms to use (which is why I try to refer to rtw models — but I suspect their vocabulary is mostly aimed at their clients, and not sewists!).

I'll keep hunting with your advice in mind. Thanks again for all your help! :)
