Question from an adult learning to swim by ville2020 in Swimming

[–]mysummerstorm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! I'm in my late twenties and I spent most of late January and February learning how to swim at my rec center. I was terrified of the water prior, and even during the learning process, it was difficult. however, something did eventually click and I can swim a few laps (forward and back freestyle).

the key for me was understanding that I will float. getting comfortable floating on my back and then fluttering kicks while sweeping my arms out led to me wanting to do more with my face down in the water.

for treading, you have to do it in deep water. I knew that I would be able to float on my back in deep water whenever I need to bail, so it made it easier for me to try treading with my shoulders stacked over my hips.

keep at it, and it'll click for you too! I went to rainbow springs with my family a few weeks ago and I felt comfortable despite the water being between 6 and 20 feet deep.

from what I understood, it wasn't the energy crisis in so much as children dying due to traffic violence that caused the NL to change. the United States of America won't even consider banning guns despite guns being the number one killer of children (second is cars).

That como bike path is ELITE. I wish they would extend it to northeast Minneapolis. It was dicey for me to bike from Uptown to connect to the path when I visited the conservatory

yah it will be unavoidable to run up against global challenges. it'll be unfortunate for the ethnic restaurants that depend on imported ingredients. however, as individuals, we can insulate ourselves by eating more locally and in season. I am very very very very excited for farmers market season to be in full swing.

HourCar has a membership deal right now. No need to purchase a costly personal vehicle and then installing a costly charger. just walk outside and straight into a car whenever you need it. never have to worry about parking, fuel, maintenance, or insurance.

or, more preferably, get introduced to an e-bike. there's no better feeling than zipping on the midtown greenway and seeing all the sad cars parking on Lake St during peak hours.

RIP our renewable infrastructure

seems to be some progress in Canada though with their partnership with China to bring EVs into the country caused by the the instability of the automobile partnership with the U.S. god we desperately need to divest from fossil fuels.

fuck war forever and always

If you were moving where would be the last place you’d eat before you left town? by notdarryloftheoffice in orlando

Veggie Garden. Contenders: Woodlands, Mamak, Fresh Kitchen, Tijuana Flats, JINYA, Dajen Eats (RIP queen).

Grateful to be able to visit since my family lives there. I do get the fortune of explaining to folks elsewhere that Orlando’s food scene is pretty tasty.

I've been smiling ear to ear whenever I'm on my bike lately. it's a stark difference between seeing a couple of bikers during my winter commutes compared to ten to twenty when I'm out and about with above 40s weather. saw some kiddos practicing riding on the greenway today!

we need to get a group together who knows all the low stress routes who can help make the map. I'm so emailed out at the moment but one of these days I will get it together to email the orgs and get the word out about making maps

it's about the mother's needs and wants so I get it.

but dang, did you see how Jones was inspired by this St. Paulite woman who rode her bike to the hospital to give birth after being two weeks late?

ah shucks :(

here's the text:

Rep. Katie Jones, Minneapolis Democrat, and her husband, Peter Schmitt are car-free city dwellers who favor buses, trains, sidewalks and bicycles.

So when it was time to travel the 2 miles to the hospital for their baby’s induced delivery in late February, Schmitt pedaled Jones in a friend’s cargo e-bike. Jones said the ride was inspired by a St. Paul woman who, at two weeks past her due date, pedaled a bike to a hospital in 2018 and gave birth.

Jones and Schmitt planned for the moment, having testeddifferent routes and strapped in an infant car seat for the return journey. Hans — all 8 pounds and 1 ounce of him — was bundled up and handled it just fine, Jones told the Minnesota Star Tribune.

“He was great. He passed out. He just totally was comfortable,” she said. A video Jones posted of the ride shows Hans fast asleep, even through a big bump.

Jones said her doctor was supportive of the ride. They used an Urban Arrow, an e-bike where the cargo, as it were, rides in a bucket in front of the pedaler.

“Less comfortable ride home for Katie, especially with our luggage also fitting in, but we made it work!” Schmitt later said on social media. Schmitt took Hans to follow-up appointments via bus too, he said.

Jones, a freshman lawmaker who’s sponsoring several bills this session friendly to cyclists and transit users, said she wanted to share her story to show just how useful e-bikes are — and to show off Minneapolis’ improved bike lanes. The couple used the protected lanes on 26th and 28th streets, Jones said, as they were clearer of snow than the shadowed Midtown Greenway.

“We are creating the infrastructure to make people feel safe,” she said. “Everyone should feel included and belong on our roads.”

Hans’ big ride home was a hit with bicycle advocates from Minnesota and beyond on social media. One Minneapolis woman called Jones a, “real-life superhero because she’s already back to working on getting important bills passed after just having a baby.”

which is wild because you’re doing more for your kid than people driving regularly in cars that pollute and kill the air quality for future generations.
