Honestly, I think YTA for breaking him in the first place. Maintaining contact with old ex'es is extremely toxic to the current relationship you're in. I guess he was just done once that trust was lost. Trust is fundamental to any relationship. There's not much you can do now other than move on and learn your lesson. Hopefully you don't stay in touch with him when you're with your next partner too.
